Enloe High School officials are saying there's no connection between the cancellation of the Homecoming Dance and pep rally and a gang-related fight earlier this month.
On Sept. 11, six Enloe students were arrested after a series of fights at school that Raleigh police have labeled as gang-related. It was on the minds of some Enloe students when it was announced Thursday that the dance was canceled.
Enloe Principal Beth Cochran said the Oct. 4 dance was canceled strictly because not enough tickets were sold. She said only 180 tickets were sold instead of the 300 needed to break even.
"I know some of the kids will be disappointed," Cochran said. "But there will be opportunities for other dances."
Cochran said the dance would definitely have taken place if enough tickets had been sold.
Cochran said ticket sales may have been hurt by the fact that the dance is being held the night after the Oct. 3 Homecoming Game against Wake Forest-Rolesville High School.
As for the pep rally, Cochran said this will be the second year in a row that she has cancelled the event. She said the problem with the rally, which is held during school hours, is that it cuts into instructional time.
Overall, Cochran said things are getting back to normal on the campus.

Fri, 10/10/2008 - 17:45 — Anonymous (not verified)In my opinion, no, i dont think it should have taken 300 tickets to break even! And the tickets didnt get sold because, yes, the dance is lame! i went my freshman year and its full of underclassman b/c all they have is winter formal and homecoming for their dances. The reason i never went after freshman year was because, it honestly just was a waste of money. the food was at minumum standards, there were hardly any decorations, and i know i heard the song chicken noodle soup played 3+ times! it was something i didnt enjoy and neither did my friends.
As for the pep rally, i think this is one of the saddest parts of it all! it is a well known fact throughout wake county that enloe students have the most rigorous schedules, classes and study lives. enloe has been one of the most stressful things i have put my self through!! i get good grades yet i feel like i never stop! its constant work and the constant reminder from teachers that we're all failures!! would it kill the administration to allow us 20 minutes of cheering on our athlete!!?! with dr. c being a former athlete herself, i thought for sure she would have been on our side! if there is time allowed durring school for meaningless firedrills, tornato drills and lockdowns, would it kill them to let us go for 20 mins?
Also a disappointing thing this year was the lack of school spirit caused by the administration. i understand that the sophomores got out of hand last year witht he facepaint, and i stronly agree! however, none was it was cause enough to take away class colors day! class color day is a day to celebrate your class spirit and a celebration of ur grade whether sophomores, not being freshman anymore, the freshman, finally being big high schoolers, juniors, finally upperclassman, and the seniors celebrating their last year! their final school spirit day! finally going to graduate and ready to be the big dogs on campus!! where ever they fall, it is a celebration! and honestly, walking around at lunch, i could have sworn it was more like a prisson the way security guards and administration were keeping everyone segregated according to class! i felt like i was back in the 1940s!!! it was rediculous!
my point being, i am a senior, i am a varsity athlete, and i do not appreciate what the administration is restricting us to! i have always been taught to walk a mile in the other persons shoes, and ive tried, really hard to look from every perspective i can! and honestly, there in my mind cant be a better reason for all this insanity other than the administration just hates fun! their fear of rebellion is rediculous and is probabably one of the reasons for some of the odd behaviors seen around campus! but any school run by a women with a doctorate shouldnt be this insane, i think all the pink and orange and whatever other color hair dye is going to her, and the rest of the staffs brain!!!
:D

Sat, 10/11/2008 - 18:38 — Class Of 2008 (not verified)one thing your going to have to learn darling, it only takes a few to ruin it for everyone, its called life, so get ready to be welcomed to the real world. and segregation: crap, the students choose to be with who they are with at lunch, sadly it does appear to be segregation, but it is not at the discrection of the security guards, maybe you should take that up with your fellow peers.

Wed, 10/08/2008 - 13:45 — Anonymous (not verified)Its really sad that we ahd to have a gang fight the cancelled all of our spirt week fun and truthfully most people can already tell this year is gonna suck just because of that...Gang fights happen everywhere and this won't be enloe's last....some of my friends were arrested or involed in the fight but most people don't even know the real story behind it all they just know what they heard on TV. It wasn't just a gang fight cause people who weren't even in gangs were in it...maybe Dr. C needs to make sure kids stay at thier own scool and we won't have this problem any more
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!
Mon, 09/29/2008 - 19:32 — FRESHMAN '12 (not verified)I am a freshman this year at Enloe. Personally, I am also kinda annoyed that they replaced class color day with class unity day, cancelled the dance, and dont even let us have a pep rally. I even got a date to the dance, [which by the way is completely ruined now just because the dance is cancelled!] Also, just because the school changed the name to "Class Unity Day" dosn't mean that people are just going to forget about freshman friday! Also for the pep rally, we have been working our butts off since the start of the year, and even though it hasn't been that long, people who are new to the school and feel overwhelmed need a break from school. Another idea would be to just have the pep rally after school, which is WAY smarter than cancelling it..... Enloe is so uptight and unfair, its not like gang fights never happen. This definantly has not been the first, so stop trying to make excuses dr. c. because your ideas arnt exactly helping our school.

Wed, 10/01/2008 - 07:13 — rr77rr99Sorry 012. Maybe the student body should plan their own pep rally out in front of the school in the form of protest signs one morning?
Make sure you call all the news stations. WCPSS hates bad publicity :)
And the next time you are pulled out of class for an assembly (taking up valuable instructional time) about your next fundraiser... maybe you all should "protest" and refuse to go. :)
If pep rallies can't cut into "valuable instructional time" why then should nonsense assemblies take up your valuable time as well then?
Get creative 012. Maybe instead of "Unity color day" or what ever.. you all should make some homemade t shirts... "Enloe Has No Pep"... "Spirit not allowed".....
something like that... Free speech ya'll....
or the entire student body should have "Black Friday" or "White Friday" and everyone dress in full black or full white ... devoid of any color.... no spirit, no pep, no unity... no color.
I REALLY CANNOT WAIT TO GRADUATE FROM THIS HELL HOLE!!!!!!!!!!
Sun, 09/28/2008 - 13:30 — Enloe HS Class 09' (not verified)Ever since I was a freshman at Enloe, spirit week has been the week to look forward too. From crazy spirit days to crowd rousing pep rally's, spirit week has been the most unifying experience that any student had. Class colors day, which was traditionally held on Friday of spirit week, was the best day of the whole week. It was a day that all students could represent their class and get really pumped for the game that was to be held later on that night, and ever since I was a freshman I just couldn't wait until the day that I was a senior and I could stand out as a senior in my green while packed into a stadium with my fellow classmates screaming and getting pumped during the pep rally. The year(s) that I did experience a pep rally, afterwards me and my friends would pile into a car and go to someone's house to primp and get all ready for the game, then come back to the school and tailgate and hang out before the game. All of these experiences led to a great and amazing day taht would always be remembered. Now I'm a senior....and I'd have to say that this year....sucks. Not only has the pep rally been cancelled, but tailgating has been cancelled too. Not only that but Dr. Cock decided that it would be a great idea to get rid of class colors day and replace it with class unity do....what kind of crap is that. I've waited four effing years and now I'm finding out that our traditional class colors day has been cancelled and replaced with some gay class unity crap...what she doesn't understand is that by breaking tradition your taking away any spirit that this so called spirit week was supposed to bring. So you know what Dr. Cock, I hope your effin happy because you have ruined my senior year. I just feel sorry for the other classes that have to put up with your crap and that have to stay in this hell hole!

Mon, 09/29/2008 - 16:11 — Anonymous (not verified)Enloe senior... it's only a matter of time before WCPSS bans all school colors, students from sporting events..humm...what else... let's see what the administrators come up with next...I am sure they will think of something. Orange jumpsuits with shock collars maybe?
I will not mention the high school, but my children can see that tide coming to their school as well. There is no "spirit". The kids try do "spirit things" but administration frowns upon it and any efforts fall flat ... the kids are beat down.
It's sad, and I feel bad for all of you. My high school years were not spent this way. We all looked forward to the basketball games, and wrestling matches, and of course, football and soccer. The stands were always packed for all sports and we screamed and yelled our heads off while the "band played on" and those are some of my best memories of those days. A kinship of classmates that you guys here in Wake County are not encouraged to experience.
cancelled dance
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 18:11 — HJ2ss2Of course they did not cancel the dance due to a gang related fight earlier in the year.
We all know that the schools are safe, don't we? It must be true because the school system says it is true.
Why is this all of a sudden
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 17:20 — EHS Class of 2008 (not verified)Why is this all of a sudden breaking news? As a recent grad from Enloe I can account for the missing "facts", because we went through this same crap last year! The homecoming dance was traditionally held after the game, but Enloe usually lost the game ruining the spirit so no one showed up to the dance, so in part STUCO decided to move it to the day after the game. As far as holding a pep rally after school, REALLY? Having a pep rally after school does not equal a pep rally during the school day, buses do not run in order to support an "Afterschool Pep Rally" so once again no one shows. Besides, they tried this last year and it didnt work then so why expect it to work now? And wake up call, Enloe's problem with "thugs" didn't just happen overnight, it was just as bad last year, bomb threats, lockdowns, drug busts... High School is supposed to be a time in an individual's life that should be remembered for events involving school spirit, taking away events like this just makes students less spirited about their school and less involved and hostile toward their school. Let seniors have their fun while it still lasts.
It's a shame more students
Sat, 09/27/2008 - 06:35 — Anonymous (not verified)It's a shame more students like yourself do not speak up about these issues you guys face in school. As parents, we get little to now information. Only what gets 'leaked'. because minors are involved, sometimes information can be easily suppressed and if kids have IEP's... protection is fierce and information is never released.
As far as school spirit, every indication I see from WCPSS is... they do all they can to prevent any school (esp. high schools) from allowing that to foster. If there were more "community" based schools you would see a different story.
WCPSS does not have "spirit building" as part of their overall plan that's firmly clear!
Ridiculous!
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 14:24 — Alan (not verified)Overfocus on "teaching to a test" and minimizing opportunities for students to relax and have social time and school traditions...........won't lead to anything particularly good.
Does this principal think students will feel all warm and fuzzy and motivated to study if she keeps canceling things that are important to the students, because they cut into "Instructional time?"
This principal should probably not be a principal and clearly seems to be someone who does not understand young people very well.
Prinipals at ALL high
Sat, 09/27/2008 - 06:39 — Anonymous (not verified)Prinipals at ALL high schools are urged to be this way.... it's not only ENLOE
No one seems to understand, they are too busy fighting off threats of and sometimes the actualities of "gangs"
By trying to quell the gang activitiy and the thugs ...not even "delinquents"... we're talking THUGS (17 year old freshman for example) .......... there is no time to foster "School spirit". Nope instead, principals are too busy taking things away from the kids beccause of actions of these "thugs" .
I don't doubt soon enough they will shut down school sports or only allow parents to attend events, not the students ,becuase of the fears of "gangs" getting into the events and causing problems.
gangs
Sat, 09/27/2008 - 22:03 — HJ2ss2As you state, this is a problem at many, if not all high schools. Unfortunately, the school system is unable to look beyond their own limitations to realize that there are programs developed to address the issue of gangs.
Of course, that would involve a recognition that they are not the experts and would also mean they would have to accept the fact that there are some areas that are better addressed by other disciplines that are knowledgeable in this area. Does anyone know they employ social workers in their system........not the" basket delivery poor kid came from a bad family environment kind" but professional's with Master's degrees who are trained to deal with these kids. Recognize the problem and hold the "thugs" responsible for their behavior.

Sun, 09/28/2008 - 11:49 — rr77rr99Good question about the social workers. I don't think they hire behavorial therapists and the like to deal with these kids that are at the upper reaches of mental instabilities - on a daily shadowing basis. Maybe they have them, but are spread amongst many schools
. There are special schools for these kids to go to within WC, but again, the goal is to bring them back into the Mainstream....where over stuffed classrooms, over burdened, untrained teachers in this "behaviorist" category are once again trying to deal with these at risk kids and behavoirs.
I think WCPSS thinks that by seating the at risk kids, or kids with true medical conditions that cause behavioral issues, everything will be "okay" because these kids will "model" themselves after the good kids.
Uh, no, I think we can all see.. they sort of try to beat up on the "weakest links" .or the so called "Good kids" that have been told by their parents to ignore and walk away.
the answer
Thu, 10/02/2008 - 05:41 — HJ2ss2The social workers in Wake County all have Master's degrees in their profession.
http://www.helpstartshere.org/Default.aspx?PageID=1013
Above is a website that explains exactly what school social workers are trained to do. Problem with Wake County is that individual school administrators don't use them as a resource. Insted, they tell them what to do. If you do not do as told, you are out of a job. So what if you have the knowledge, training and skills to reach "at risk" students and develop appropriate interventions to address the problem. Not to mention the abilitity to intervene on the parents and students behalf in the school. Absolutely none of this is recognized.
There are Behavioral
Mon, 09/29/2008 - 07:51 — vsheehanThere are Behavioral specialists at Wake. Not enough but there are some. You can request a behavioral evaluation but it’s a long wait. The School wide PBS system(implemented 2 years ago) is set up to put the whole school on a behavioral system. In VA that is what they do and it works great.
Why are all comments about the kids fighting in schools centerad around kids with IEPs? I will bet most of the kids involved did not have an IEP.
not all on IEP's
Fri, 10/03/2008 - 08:12 — HJ2ss2I believe you are correct.
Can You Believe the Homecoming Score?
Sat, 10/04/2008 - 14:33 — Anonymous (not verified)Hey this ridiculus if you went to the game last night it was bad. 48-7 we didn't even get our first touchdown till 4th quarter.I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!WOW!! enloe needs to step up their game.
They cancelled the dance because not enough tickets were sold, so i dont care they ruined it. Me and my boyfriend were going to go together and it was the last day to get tickets. they didnt tell anyone they were selling tickets either.
the pep rally was cancelled because after that gang fight they didnt want anyone to be an easy target to get hurt at the pep rally. Yesterday was freshman friday i'm a freshman too. Seniors, Juniors, and Sophmores were running around like fools trying to hit freshman with paint and throw them trash cans. they said they will suspend anyone that had paint on their face 7 of my friends got smacked or thrown in the trash can.WOW!!!
ATTENTION STUDENTS OF ENLOE WE ARE OFFICIALLY ON LOCKDOWN THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The real question
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 13:11 — Anonymous (not verified)Why arent the kids participating in the school dance? *cost?, timing?, lashing out? lame dance? no date?
Why does it take 300 ticket sales to "break even"? My goodness how much does this thing cost?
I dont know what the ticket charge is but at $5 each for 300 tickets that is $1500 just to break even. Has the school thought about cutting the expenses down to a minimum and holding the dance for the 180 that are interested. At best, you 4 homecomings in your lifetime.. Let the kids dance!
Here's a thought, quit having so many teacher work days and then you can hold one pep rally a year for homecoming week.
Has these people forgotten what it was like? My gracious people THINK BACK...
RE: SAT's and the dance.. If this has happened several times why doesnt the school change it "homecoming date"? Is there a date drawn in stone that says the homecoming game and dance must be held on that date every year? Come on educators these issues are NO BRAINERS.. Stop thinking like administrators and bring yourselves down from the mountain to think like normal, everyday parents and adults and while your doing that please remember what it was like when you were in school.
Good Luck!
What I know about
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 16:45 — shank56What I know about scheduling is that the Director of Athletics from our school meets in the spring with the other AD's in the conference to set the athletic schedule for the fall. Our PTA is told in May the dates for the Homecoming game and week- sometimes it falls the night before the SAT and sometimes not.
Question to ask is who sponsors the dance? A club, a class (ie Juniors) , the student council??
These folks are the ones selling the tickets, making posters , soliticing drinks and snacks from parents. The "school administration" attends , as well as official security, and other chaperones which are needed ( parents) and are usually soliticed from the dance sponsor.
You folks are dreaming about your homecoming dance in the 50's 60's and 70's . I'm not an Enloe parent , but my kids never went to the Homecoming dance (well maybe the first time as freshmen.). While this dance was an informal after the game event, they preferred the more formal dress up events. Homecoming, not a big deal.
not getting the whole story
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 12:24 — bigwinnienot getting the whole story from WCPSS, surely you jest.....they always give all the facts (as they make them up)
Why were only 180 tickets
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 12:22 — SideburnsWhy were only 180 tickets sold? If the dance is delayed "EVERY year" (as shank says) the SAT follows the game, what's the difference this year? Has it been canceled before? How do students (at least the 180 that had planned on attending) feel about it? While it may be a good decision, I don't think we're getting the whole story.
Standardized Testing
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 11:39 — Anonymous (not verified)Standardized testing, and field testing that doesn't even count, takes multiple hours away from instructional time, yet that type of interruption takes place several times throughout the year. Students should be given the chance to get excited about their school and show some school spirit. School pride gives many students a reason to show up to school when they may not feel they have a reason otherwise.
This is just one more action
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 11:27 — Enloe Parent (not verified)This is just one more action to remove spirit from this school. Every
year for as long as I can remember Enloe has had spirit week with one
day devoted to student unity with all classes wearing their class
colors and shirts. However this year someone has call that off as well
because, as they tell it , it doesn't support school unity. Don't these
adminisirators get it? That is school unity and all the students look
forward to that special day to show student unity and school tradition.
That's what makes Enloe so special.
The next thing you know they will prohibit students and fans from going
to any of the sporting events, because it may encourage students to
exhibit, well, school spirit.
Truly sad when young people are not allowed to be young people.

Fri, 09/26/2008 - 10:37 — Anonymous (not verified)People say that teens act up and out because there are no structured events for teens to attend and enjoy. How can they enjoy simple things such as the memories of High School Homecoming pep rallys and dances when they are discarded under false pretenses? If pep rallys take up instructional time, have the rally immediately after school or just prior to the game. Who came up with the idea of a Homecoming dance the night after Homecoming? Nice try but obviously even the kids saw through that one. This is a prime example teens will use to go and have an "un-chaperoned" private party. When will we adults stop thinking that teenagers don’t know when adults are playing games? Great job Beth Cochran & staff!

Well for all of you negative Nellies sho apparently don't have kids in high school, the SAT is scheduled for Saturday morning October 4, and it has been our experience EVERY year that the dance is postponed from HOmecoming night to the following night, or even to another week- when the SAT follows the game.

Mon, 10/06/2008 - 17:30 — Anonymous (not verified)since the SAT dates are set long before the date of Homecoming, why wouldn't the brilliant WCPSS staff select another date for Homecoming other than the SAT weekend?
PS-No, I don't have kids in High school but I had my High School Homecoming and the SAT the same weekend and did not have any problems scoring high on the SAT, getting into Duke and becoming a productive member of society!!
