On the eve of the election runoff, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall went stumping for votes at tonight's state NAACP rally.
Marshall, one of two candidates competing to be the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, stayed for most of tonight's rally as the Wake school board majority was excoriated for eliminating the diversity policy.
Marshall is competing against former state Senator Cal Cunningham for the right to face Republican incumbent Richard Burr in November.
Also tonight, Barber said he hopes to arrange a meeting with Gov. Bev Perdue and State Schools Superintendent June Atkinson to raise the NAACP's concerns about Wake. Perdue recently praised Barber and said she was declaring "war" against school resegregation in North Carolina.
UPDATE
Marshall easily won the runoff Tuesday.

Tue, 06/22/2010 - 14:42 — true_freedomEven the governor is against the board. Give it up guys, you are pathetic.
Marshall shouldn't do it!
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 08:45 — aquaman4life68Marshall shouldn't do it! I wouldn't touch this with a 10ft. stick!! She could be committing politicial suicide with this. All everyone wants to do, is get out there and "seem" like they truly care. Most all they want to do is stir up more trouble. I thin some want to go down in the history book of the modern day civil rights. They are ONLY in this for their own selfish political gain.
They are ONLY in this for their own selfish political gain.
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 09:00 — jgegbgmgDoes this mean that John Tedesco was also in this for his own SELFISH political gain when he spoke at the Tea Party gathering earlier this year? Or is it okay for some but not for others to attend these functions? Your answer will be interesting !!!!
Alright, I will give you
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 10:35 — aquaman4life68Alright, I will give you that...you do have a point there and I agree it does seem good for one but not the other...
However...John isn't about hate, he's actually interested in helping and working things out. John also doesn't make a HUGE deal and try to suck up more air time from the media.
This group is all about race baiting and spreading more hate...with absolute NO need or want to discuss things but only in their terms. Barber would be taken more seriously if he would actually provide useful information. Each time I have watched him on clips from the news, he says nothing but the same old thing over and over and over. As for Marshall, I just wouldn't want to put my name into that messy pot that Barber, etc. are stirring up. She just might loose some valuable votes due to her association.
Sucking Up
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 20:58 — jgegbgmgCan't believe you wrote that John doesn't try to suck up more air time from the media. This guy runs toward cameras anytime he sees one. You might want to get your statements straight before writing them. This guy goes from making sure the media knows that he resigned (if you believe that) from his job and will live out of his car (if you believe that) if necessary to save our kids. You got to be kidding - He is number one when it comes to sucking up to the media. What a loser he is !!!!!!!
I wouldn't expect anything
Wed, 06/23/2010 - 00:09 — aquaman4life68I wouldn't expect anything more from a Barber supporter like yourself.

Tue, 06/22/2010 - 14:43 — true_freedomJohn is the one who placed a picture of a bunch of "diverse" kids on his microphone during the meeting. He faced it towards the audience. If that isn't sucking up, I don't know what is.
I'll have to go back to
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 18:56 — aquaman4life68I'll have to go back to WRAL's site for the previous meeting. He held up a picture yes, of diverse children....he got that picture from a woman that used it to show her support of the diversity policy. I can't remember her name, she's white, glasses , shorter cut hair...yeah i know, not much of a mental image there. However I'm not sure if she is a teacher or a former teacher?
I think the woman was Diana
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 20:27 — DrActualFactualI think the woman was Diana Bader, I don't think she is a teacher but she has served on various committees and PTA positions.
Yes I do believe you are

Tue, 06/22/2010 - 20:41 — SideburnsJust attend a GSIW meeting. They were passing out posters with 'diverse' children on it. I just wonder how they could tell who the poor kids were.

Tue, 06/22/2010 - 18:11 — zandeWhen he was running for office I thought he was a parent because a lot of his campaign literature featured a picture of him with a child. I found out later that the child was a nephew (or some other relation) and that he has no children of his own. Was he pandering to parents or being misleading by placing a child in his campaign ads???
This is another example of
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 18:50 — woodstockThis is another example of how new you are to this. Tedesco repeatedly explained to voters who that kids was ...if you knew his life story you would not be questioning his commitment to education and youth.
OH Please
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 19:39 — Solon77Like he is the only one on the face of the earth to overcome adversity to get an education and go on to some form of public service. Time and place of my youth - it was the majority of kids being the first in their family to go to college, worked their way through college working full time, just getting buy. Many of us being the oldest blazed the way and put our siblings through college as well. We didn't think anything of it - it was the thing to do.
Yeah, you are right, he is
Wed, 06/23/2010 - 07:39 — woodstockYeah, you are right, he is not the "only one on the face of the earth to overcome adversity." But that obviously was not the point. You cannot discount Tedesco's experience in raising his younger siblings, being this first in his family to get a degree, overcoming extreme poverty, and pursuing a career in public service when discussing his commitment to youth and education. Do others share similar experiences? Sure, there are plenty of them, and I admire them too.
Schooled!

Do you even know the name of the class?
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 08:30 — gregishereThis is not School Issues 101. This is Political Fight for Soul of Nation. The Wake School Board is now a proxy war between progressive ideals and right-wing idiocy. Talk all you want about numbers and children, and both sides do, but the clear fact is this long ago ceased being about children. The day Art Pope decided he wanted his Margiotta Puppet to have some friends, the curriculum changed. If this were about school children, Margiotta would listen to reason, not grumble that a President wanted to talk staying in school with students, and not pay back supporters with land deals. This is a culture war, and the side of right is clearly with the progressives. It is of a piece with the border freaks in Arizona who fetishize Patriotism into some bigtime jingoism. The South is the last bastion of bigoted idiocy. But the demographics will only let El Pope Man have his day for so long, just as the GOP will only have its day for so long, nationally, too. Our nation, and Wake County, is getting less white by the day. Thank goodness. Soon enough, those of you who want some NEVER WAS version of America will realize it's time to move on to Idaho or something. The rest of us will figure out ways to work and play and, yes, go to school together.

What About The Rest Of The State?
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 08:08 — JanisTangoIt's amazing to me that Perdue and other politicians are coming out against Wake and this policy change. What about the fact that Mecklenberg abandoned this policy years ago? Where was Rev. Barber then? Where was Lt. Governor Perdue? Where was the concern back then? It seems to me if this was a 'real' problem to be concerned with they would be taking on Mecklenberg considering their ED population is much greater than Wakes.
Wow
Mon, 06/21/2010 - 23:55 — jenuineI very much disagree with the Wake School Board's philosophy, but disagree even more strongly with all of these politicians and race hatred promotion professionals trying to use the situation to their advantage with absolutely no concern or regard for the parents and children of Wake County Schools.
