WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Early PAC campaign reports

Bookmark and Share

Some folks are willing to put their own money behind campaign efforts to change the school board.

Campaign finance reports show that PACs set up by Wake Schools Community Alliance and Take Wake Schools Back have combined raised a little more than $2,000 so far. Organizers say things will pick up closer to the October elections.

The Children's PAC hasn't filed detailed spending reports yet.

WSCA's PAC has reported the most contributions so far at $1,800.

Some of the group's donors should be pretty familiar names. Cary Town Councilman Don Frantz gave $100. Joe Ciulla, a member of WSCA's steering commitee, gave $200.

Take Wake Schools Back has reported raising $202.25. Click here for the group's report.

Legally, none of the PACs can coordinate their campaigns. But they can all run independent ad campaigns that could raise public attention on the four board races.

I smell FEAR. She only bothers to snarl at you when you pose a serious threat.

Keep up the good work! I am rooting for you guys!!

HA!

You think that was a snarl.  Far from it.  The comedy you all provide is actually my enjoyment for the day.

If the commitment is there that you all profess I expect to see thousands of contributors and tens of thousands of dollars.

Hey Support, Apparently

Hey Support,

Apparently there are a lot of people who read this blog but don't comment.  Today was the second-best fundraising day we have had so far, thanks for the help!

No, YOU are laughable!

It won't take tens of thousands of $$ in contributions to win ANY of the 4 elections
this year!  It won't take tens of thousands of $$ to gather 5000 votes, or less, in
each district!  It won't take much at all to replace any of the 4 because status
quo and ignorance will easily be defeated October 6th!

These IDIOTS have PO'd SO many people, except for you and Matt, that we
should be able to declare winners by lunch on October 6th!!!!

And the more ignorance they keep dishing out, such as moving start times,
delaying track changes, FORCING track changes, denying requests, the diarrhea
that flows out of Harold and Stan's pie holes, WEP's "it's all about the 60's
mentality" and ALL the other TRUE IGNORANCE this current board and its string
handlers and supporters serve up, the easier this election is going to be!

HECK it might be over by 10am on October 6th!

...

I must have missed the PAC report for the candidates running on the status quo ticket.  How much money have they raised?

supportwcpss, can you ask someone?

Strong District 7 Contributions

I hope the $$$ for WSCA from folks in district 7 motivate strong candidates to come out. I noticed $750 of the individual disaggregated contributions are from folks in district 7 (27613 and 27617 zip codes).

This post was a nice reminder for me and other folks to contribute. I just placed my donation today. Thanks!

Anyone?  In the past I have

Anyone?  In the past I have always donated cash to the candidates I endorse as I felt it was less trackable and more discreet.  Is there a limit to the amount you can donate to each PAC, or the number of times you donate?  It isn't tax deductible is it?  Any other info a person might want/need to know before donating?

Dr., Campaigns and PAC's

Dr.,

Campaigns and PAC's may only accept $50 or less in cash donations.  Individuals who have contributed greater than $50 must be listed in the disclosure reports.  You can contribute $50 to WSCA, then contribute $50 to each of the four candidates you support without making the papers.  The limit you can donate to an individual campaign or PAC is $3,000.  Hope that helps.  If you want to know more, send a message to the WSCA email address and they'll get it to me.

Thanks a bunch....If I wish

Thanks a bunch....If I wish to remain anonymous I can make multiple donations to each pack in $49.00 not to exceed $3,000 at any one PAC--correct?  Thanks.  At least that is less than private school tuition for multiple children for a chance at a reasonable board.  I'll catch the Morrisville mtg.

To clarify, you may make a

To clarify, you may make a donation of $50 or less and your name will not be featured in the campaign disclosure reports.  However, if you cumulative donations exceed $50, then they must publish your name.  This applies either to PAC's or individual campaigns.

And I agree that contributions to this effort are a good alternative to paying private school tuition if that 's the alternative you are facing.

Well, considering that those

Well, considering that those were the donations made from 27 Feb to 9 March, I think that's a lot of money raised by WSCA so far. My donation wasn't listed on the report so I know that there's at least another $100 donated. :-)

Things will pick up once we know who the candidates are.

Snicker

Where is the Tsunami of support? Thousands flocking to support this uprising. If I count right, 14 individuals for WSCA and 3 for the other one (all in kind and no real money donations). Wow. And all the usual suspects - the 10-14 on this blog, CP, or the rant and rave outlets.

You preach the overwhelming number of parents who have an issue - why aren't they putting their money where their mouth is?

Hate to say it but this is laughable.

Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks for the reminder!  I'll be sure to remind my neighbors as well, who are all so happy about their recent year-round and magnet rejections, as well as not finding out about tracks for grandfathered kids until May.

Now we all get to submit yet more forms to WCPSS, hope that we can escalate for a bus ride (on a bus already travelling thru the neighborhood), and try to figure out if there's any hope for a family vacation this summer.

Oh yes - we all have so much extra time, that we love figuring out what the next steps are in 'WCPSS-land'.

I think you are absolutely

I think you are absolutely right.  You, the N&O editorial staff and the rest of the status-quo supporters should just stop worrying about the people complaining about schools.

stopy worrying

and go away....go far far away!
