WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Donnie Harrison making robocalls for Heather Losurdo

Bookmark and Share

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison made robocalls asking people to vote for Heather Losurdo in the Wake County school board runoff election.

In the Monday robocall, Harrison touted Losurdo's support of "the new bi-partisan student assignment plan." He said that incumbent Kevin Hill "wants to go back to the forced busing policy parents hated so much."

Harrison, who like Losurdo is a Republican, made a pitch to people who aren't parents of current students by noting that "72 percent of your county property taxes go to the schools." He said that "Heather will be a good steward of your tax dollars."

Harrison also tried to help school board candidate Donna Williams in the District 6 race by appearing in her radio ads. It clearly didn't help Williams to win.

Here's the text of the robocall:

"Hello, I'm Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison. Tomorrow is Election Day, and I hope you will vote for Heather Losurdo for school board.

Heather supports the new bi-partisan student assignment plan. Her opponent voted against it. He wants to go back to the forced busing policy parents hated so much.

Even if you don't have kids in school, you still need to vote for Heather. Seventy-two percent of your county property taxes go to the schools. Heather will be a good steward of your tax dollars.

So vote for Heather Losurdo for school board."

How did she

get the Sheriff to lie for her also?  Hill has said over and over that he is not going back to the old assignment policy.  So, either Hill is not telling the truth or Losurdo isn't telling the truth.  Only time will tell and seeing as how Losurdo has spent this campaign lying about Hill's positions (He voted for a less expensive search firm with his "no" vote against the largest outlay of taxpayer dollars) Hopefully her lies will end tonight with her defeat.  If not, we'll have to listen to her lies rammed into our heads for the next four years.

I know, I know

Hill is the one not being truthful!

Look at who will soon be surrounding him, more non-truthful people!

Whatcha think?

Good grief...

Between you and clearthinker, I feel like I've gotten a bigger dose of sheer hatred than I would if I were the sole Bruins fan at a Philadelphia Flyer's home game.  Give it a rest.

Nah

You can't help to create a world here and then lament the way it works.  You have helped to make this school board as partisan as it is (was after tonight) You cannot now turn it off.  You created this monster, now live with it.

Sad but true

Sad but true statements.   This blog hasn't suddenly become partisan.   Newton's third law has suprising applications beyond the laws of motion.

I doubt very much if Bob

I doubt very much if Bob Sconce or even Woody, for that matter, has caused the partisanship. Last I heard, news shows and newspapers do not do stories about those who comment on blogs.

No what made this a partisan issue is all about the actions of Barber and his cohorts, and the coverage he got from WRAL, and the News and Observer.

Consider that those of us who advocated assignment reform for so long have been trying to make a lot of noise for years. We never got that extent of coverage from newspapers or news shows. It's only after voters, without heavy support of political parties, made a change at the ballot box in 2009 that the media realized we were a force to be reckoned with. Only then, did they came out with the heavy artillery and turn Wake County into a battlefield.

Hmm..

Feel that way about many here all the time -- Woodstock, FSandU, Sideburns, and more.   Nobody ever gives it a rest on this blog.

always a pleasure

to see a comment from a sensible person here.  Thanks!

The feeling is mutual, I'm sure.

If there are people willing to swallow crap, there will always be people willing to feed it to them.
