WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Donating to Gardner and Norwalk

Bookmark and Share

You can tell a lot about candidates from who gives them money.

As noted in today's article by Michael Biesecker, there are pretty noticeable patterns in the people giving money to County Commissioner Kenn Gardner and challenger Stan Norwalk.

Gardner's getting a lot of money from developers and the housing industry. Norwalk is getting a lot of money from slow-growth advocates and educators.

For this blog post, we'll focus on the education-related donors. Understandably, this means more focus on Norwalk's backers.

But Gardner did get $1,000 from businessman Robert Luddy, a frequent critic of the Wake school system and the public schools in general.

Norwalk's donors include school board members Beverley Clark, Kevin Hill and Lori Millberg and former school board member Susan Parry.

Norwalk is also getting money from what some of you guys have called the "Friends of Wake" crowd. This includes Ann Goodnight, co-chairwoman of the 2006 bond campaign and wife of SAS CEO Jim Goodnight; and Carter Worthy, co-chairwoman of the 2003 bond campaign finance committee.

Both women also have extensive ties with the Wake Education Partnership. Other people with ties to the Partnership who gave money to Norwalk include Ann Denlinger, the president; Tony Habit, a past president; Virginia Parker, a member of the board directors and trustees and past interim president; Patti Gillenwater, a member of the board of directors; and Smedes York, a member of the board of trustees.

Other Norwalk backers include John Wilson, executive director of the National Education Association; John Dornan, executive director of the Public School Forum of N.C.; Ed Dunlap, executive director of the N.C. School Boards Association; and Leanne Winner, lobbyist for the N.C. School Boards Association.

wow

did you notice all the places in the county represented by the folks that gave to Gardner....?????

I saw him speak, he had a

I saw him speak, he had a great line about the N&O that I won't print here though...

Seems to me.....

As just another serf living in Wake County, it seems to me that Stan Norwalk has found a home with elitist crowd of Raleigh based on the above. The last thing we folks out in the county need is another "insider-the-beltline" wannabe living with us po'folks.

I this don't understand why people with so much hate in their hearts for children, parents, and taxpayers want to run for public office. What is even more sickening is the people(party) that supports them.
