WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

District 8 candidate forum tonight

Bookmark and Share

Wake County school board chairman Ron Margiotta will go head-to-head with Susan Evans at tonight's forum sponsored by WakeUP Wake County and the League of Women Voters of Wake County.

Both District 8 candidates have agreed to attend the forum that starts at 7 p.m. at the Cary C. Jones Community Building, 309 Holleman Street in Apex. Tonight's forum should be lively considering the two candidates involved.

Tonight's forum

There was a stark contrast in the two candidates.  Susan seemed to have a better understanding of the issues, statistics and vision for our school district.  She does not have a hidden agenda or conflict which would prejudice or cloud her judgment.  Tonight Mr. Margiotta spoke of his support of the magnet school program which contradicts his previous statements on these programs.

While Ms. Evans was sharp, extremely knowledgeable of the facts,  and projections for future and current endeavors, Mr. Margiotta seemed woefully unprepared and a bit arrogant and nonchalant about the affair.  When Ms. Evans critiqued/questioned many of the decisions by the majority, Mr. Margiotta tried unsuccessfully to answer her claims rather than the question at hand.  To many observers, he seemed like a fighter who had been hit time and time again with body punches and stung by an upper cut. He definitely seemed like the novice.

Our district deserves a leader who can handle the pressure and has a vision to lead us in a direction for all children, not just saying "proximity" in every answer.  Wake County is a very unique school district and deserves someone who puts the children first and not use code words to divide and appease. Our children, community and school district deserve someone who is willing to work in the best interest of all 146,000 children in our district, not just for a minority of families.  Well done Susan Evans and I am proud to support your candidacy.  You will serve our community with passion, integrity, and a willingness to truly listen to all sides.

Did Ronnie M wear his superhero outfit and play...

the song from his recent superhero video that his supporters posted on the Internet? I'm not sure how Evans would have responded to such a move at tonight's forum.

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

From the news recap

Good closing statement Ron.  All true.

Anyone voting against that man is voting against their own kids.
