WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Disputing a school board endorsement

Bookmark and Share

There's a "he said, she said" dispute going on between District 1 school board candidate Debbie Vair and a NAACP official.

Ronald White, president of the South Central Wake NAACP, denies that he's endorsing Vair. But Vair says White gave her permission to list him as a supporter on her campaign web site.

They both can't be right on this issue.

Something to consider is that the leadership of the Democratic Party and the black community have largely backed Rita Rakestraw in the District 1 race. Rakestraw and Chris Malone are the most well-funded candidates in the three-person District 1 contest.

White and Vair have been working together to try to block construction of Forest Ridge High School because of a potential slave cemetery on the site.

Poor Debbie Vair doesn't even get it...

I attended a District 1 forum in which Debbie Vair got very emotional and stuck on what parents (PTA mtgs) have told her, repeated herself, and even apologized for getting worked up by her passion. I am sorry to report although she may be passionate she is very naive about the issues in Wake County. Malone, however, had answers to all the questions, because he read them line by line after he introduced himself as a politician. Rita Rakestraw was the only candidate who stayed on track, looked at people, and spoke clearly about what she plans to do. The choice in District 1 is clear...Rita Rakestraw is the only viable option. Vote for Rita on Oct. 6, who will stand for all children, not just the affluent. www.ritaforboard.com

Clear...I Think Not!

You must have not seen her performance on New 14.  I like a lot of other people can only take it in small doses!  She has no clue and it was quite apparent!

BS

Vair doesn't give a rat's ass about any cemetery.

There is something we can agree on!

You are absolutely right!  Her only concern is that the High School is not built in her backyard!

A PARK

She went on and on and on - eyes getting bigger and more wild - about how that property in her back yard really MUST be a park. People started talking about other subjects - Debbie is still talking about the park. Geez. This lady must love squirrels (and her property values).
