WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Dismissing SPARC's lawsuit

Bookmark and Share

It looks like we can now close the book on SPARC Academy.

A federal judge has thrown out SPARC's lawsuit alleging the State Board of Education didn't renew the school's charter because its students and management are predominantly African American. Click here for a prior post.

What may not have helped the Raleigh charter school's case is that its attorney didn't show up for the hearing. It had been rescheduled to that day at his request. A week later, the judge dismissed the case.

The state is now asking that SPARC reimburse its costs for having attended that meeting. Click here to read its request.

Wait a minute...

I thought charter schools were the answer to everything!  Everything is better in a charter school, or so we are told.  By all means, let's lift the charter cap so we can have more charter schools like SPARC leading the way for our children!

Remove the CAP or get rid of them all together

SPARC was a failing school because it operated for so long because of political correctness. As a 100% minority school, it should of been a better alternative to traditional public schools. The results were worse not better. I am against any homogenized charter school, except those that meet special needs. The fact we have a CAP, denied another school that could of had positive results from opening.

But, that being said, the lack of availability of charters to the majority of those that want them is unfair. It is not a good use of taxpayer's money since it is discriminatory.
