WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Discussing the diversity policy at churches

Bookmark and Share

Some churchgoers are getting a mix of religion and school board election politics.

As noted in Saturday's article by Kristin Collins, black leaders have been discussing the possible elimination of the diversity policy at churches. The latest example of the union of faith and politics took place this morning at the Community United Church of Christ in Raleigh.

School board member Anne McLaurin talked this morning at the church's Sunday Forum, which the church describes as a way "to put your faith and concern into action."

Based on how the church described today's event, it's fairly clear where it's coming down on the diversity policy and neighborhood schools.

Here's information the church sent about the event:

SUNDAY FORUM
October 4, 2009
9:15 to 10:15 am

"The Future of Wake County Schools"
Dr. Anne McLaurin
Wake County School Board Member

This Sunday we welcome Dr. Anne McLaurin to discuss the future of Wake County Schools.

The election this Tuesday may dramatically reshape public schools in Wake County.  If candidates who oppose busing and reassignment (who say they support "neighborhood schools") win the majority of the 4 seats up for election, efforts to maintain classroom diversity could be abandoned.  Some fear that this will lead to a de-facto re-segregation of NC's largest school system.  Come and weigh in on the topic.

Visit www.newsobserver.com for several analyses, including the most recent story.

Dr. McLaurin, a family physician with SAS Healthcare Center, was elected in 2007 to the Wake County Board of Education to represent District 5. She has also been an active community volunteer and advocate, particularly in the area of breast cancer screening.  The wife of Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker, mother of two, and the daughter of two physicians, Dr. McLaurin graduated from Rice University and Cincinnati's College of Medicine

The Forum meets in Vaughan Fellowship Hall at Community UCC which is located at 814 Dixie Trail, Raleigh (corner of Wade Avenue and Dixie Trail).

NO ONE HAS ADVOCATED A

NO ONE HAS ADVOCATED A DESIRE TO RETURN TO SEGREGATED SCHOOLS! However, Raleigh/Wake County black leadership must be held accountable for failing our children. It's their indecisive leadership and laziness that has allowed whole families to fall into such high disrepair

Speaking of McLaurin, some

Speaking of McLaurin, some may be interested -- or outraged -- to learn that city sanitation workers have been instructed -- presumably by Mayor Meeker -- to pull up Larry Hudson signs (Hudson is running against Meeker in the mayoral race). I am pretty sure this is misuse of government employees and is unlawful.

More anonymous false blather.

Why don't you have courage and say who you are.

1.) Sanitation workers have enforced the law on yard signs in right of way every cycle for years. Mayor Meeker issued no such instruction.  Why should he.  Larry Hudson, who has not participated in City elections, and lives in Durham County is no threat.  Buy a clue.

2). Ann McLaurin no longer works at SAS, but when she did it was as a physician for their health plan.  Your accusations furthers your track record of irrational misleading accusations. BTW, part of the reason she is no longer at SAS is because they did not approve of her taking time to be on the School Board.  Maybe that is where the bias is.

Maybe you are biased, as his campaign advisor....

Well, of course you are going to defend him, you are his political advisor and he has paid you well over $12,000. I guess we know where the bias really is.

Brought to you by a paid political hack

This commenter is a paid political hack who is paid to refute comments made by ordinary citizens on this board.  We're citizens trying to get the word out, he is a paid troll.  He's saying what they want him to say.

Nice try. The sanitation

Nice try, but incorrect...yet again. The sanitation worker admitted that he was "instructed to remove the Hudson signs." Other signs for other races were left standing. Please tell me again about that wonderful Meeker honesty and character.

Hudson may not have a chance in this election, but Meeker  still has the responsibility to maintain the integrity of his elected position. You, sir, are the one who needs to get a clue.

If McLaurin no longer works at SAS, why did the N&O report it to be so? How long has she been a school board member and how long has she worked at SAS?

Once again, this is not about me...it is not about you either for that matter. LOL!

Meeker Lost My Vote With He Backed the Status Quo

Meeker lost my vote when he backed the status quo candidates!

Me too, Mama Lynn.  I voted

Me too, Mama Lynn.  I voted for Meeker in the past but not this time.  Same with certain people running for City Council.  Donations to Rita Rakestraw and other status quo candidates =no votes from me.

It's ok, they're democrats

Nothing to see here folks. As exemplified by Democrat Governor Mike Easley, Democrat Speaker Jim Black, and others, democrats in NC believe the laws are for the little people. And ACORNS don't fall far from the tree....

Mixing church and politics

Mixing church and politics is only illegal when Repubs do it. Nothing new about any of this.

McLauren is a school board

McLauren is a school board member and a SAS employee. Did she assist in hiding the EVASS data (developed by and known to SAS) along with Burns and Holdzkom which indicates systematic discriminitory practices against low-income and black students by the Wake County school system?

Also, it is unlawful for churches to participate in promoting political candidates.

A lot of status quo officials, have a lot of questions to answer.

So which is it

"Some fear that this will lead to a de-facto re-segregation of NC's largest school system. "So which is it? Race or Income? I am confused. Last I checked the Supreme Court ruled it was illegal to bus by race. The current status quo is drowning and they know it. Out with the status quo they need to go! Oct 6 for change!
