WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Determining your node

Bookmark and Share

The search function allowing you to determine your node by plugging in your address is now working.

That link had been down yesterday. It's been frustrating to parents who've been trying to see if they're in the new plan.

The link doesn't yet reflect the proposed 2009-12 assignments. But once you find the node info you can cross reference it with the plan overview.

The full plan will be up at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Town Manager?

Sideburns,

Thanks for the idea. Unfortuntaley we live in the county so I don't think we have a town manager. I have contacted growth management a couple of times, but have not heard back yet.

data Need

I have asked, buthave not heard back. I am concerned with the holidays coming up that I won't have time to prepare for the public input sessions in early January. I guess I will have to wait and see if they will provide the data. we are currently being reassigned out of our district...this of course will marginalize my representation on the board as our new school will not be represented by my elected school board member

Town Manager?

new876,

Try your Town Manager. I know WCPSS gave Apex and Holly Springs a School Attendance report. It lists the percentages of students at every school who attend school within the municipality in which they live. It's a start at least.

Also on page 90 of the

Also on page 90 of the WCPSS School Statistics and Maps.  e.g. How many kids from Apex Town attend a school in Apex Town.

#/% students outside of district

Angela, thanks for the link. Do you know how I can determine the number and percent of students that are moved from the schools in District 3 to schools ooutside of the district?

Keung, do you know how to get this data?

Thanks

You can ask the district.

You can ask the district.

IIRC, this is what they

IIRC, this is what they (WCPSS G&P) claim to NOT be able to do.....they track by node not district AFAIK, but someone else who is better with numbers might know better.....

Better Yet

How about each school (separated by ES, MS & HS) in each district that is bussed into another school and by their socio-economic status? i.e. We are Carpenter (District 7 - Patti Head) are being shipped to East Cary MS (District 9 - Eleanor Gotte). Now, why are we not staying in our district and going to Mills Park ES? After all we are going to Panther Creek which is in Patti's District..and gee I cannot vote for District 9?

My mistake

Panther Creek is in Ron's..now that makes me wonder if Mills Park will be in Ron's too, probably..needless, we should be going to our closest school and normal feeder pattern...

I still would like to know which dart they through to make certain nodes be picked time and again to be their socio-economical guinne pig?

#/% students outside of district

Is there a way to get the # and % of students that are bussed out of district 3 and into one of the other districts?  thanks.
