WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Defense of Cathy Truitt's assertions about school board member Ron Margiotta

Bookmark and Share

Here's more on the fight between school board candidate Cathy Truitt and school board member Ron Margiotta.

Debra McHenry has submitted a letter to the editor saying that there's a witness to Truitt's statements about Margiotta asking her if she'd support firing Supt. Del Burns. For background, McHenry unsuccessfully ran against Horace Tart for the District 2 school board seat in 2005.

Most of McHenry's letter is focused on attacking Margiotta, the Wake Schools Community Alliance and District 2 candidate John Tedesco. For instance, she says Margiotta told Truitt he has no vision for the children of the school system.

McHenry's letter amplifies on the assertions in Truitt's ad that Tedesco would be a pawn of Margiotta and western Wake.

Click here and here for back posts on the fight.

Here's McHenry's letter:

Although it is not something I normally do, I felt compelled to write regarding the reporting on Ms. Truitt and Mr. Margiotta. Cathy's statements are true and she does have a witness to them. However as she has said, Ron, Keith Weatherly and others have stated in public meetings that what we really need is more people like Ron Margiotta, people who will follow Ron.

The emails shown by Mr. Margiotta are the ones requesting a meeting (THE meeting she is talking about) in which she wanted to discuss with him what being a school board member entailed as she was CONSIDERING whether to run for office. That is why she went. Upon getting to the meeting she found herself "being vetted" by him. When asked what his vision was for children in WCPSS, he said he guessed he had none. That is who the Alliance is looking up to as their hero. Let me say that I believe that many of them are innocently looking for him to make this BIG change they are looking for in the system.

People meet with others for many reasons. WE all would do well to remember what ASSUMeing does to us. Cathy had her reasons for each of her meetings. Many assumptions are being thrown out there about her actions. However, no one has taken the time to ask her. Could it be because they only want to throw slime?

Some people from the Alliance like to tell how they know so much and how they know what is best for all of us in Wake County. Problem is the "problem" looks and feels different in each district and one simple answer does not fill all. There are complicated issues which underlie the "problem" and it will take the school board, the county commissioners and municipalities to bring about a meaningful change.

I encourage everyone to look at where the funds are coming from to support John Tedesco in his bid for office. Not from District 2, but from Western Wake County. All one has to do is check his campaign reports. So it is obvious in District 2 what is going on, but it is playing out in just the same way in all districts. All the candidates supported by the Republicans were vetted by Ron. Those same candidates were supported by the Alliance. Therefore, they all had to take the same allegiance. Having attended many board work sessions and meetings, Ron says nothing about anything unless it has to do with bringing in poor students to schools in his area.

I would encourage everyone to do some real research in their district to be sure what you are getting for your vote. Is it good for you and your district or good for Ron and his district's agenda? I would challenge the papers to do investigative journalism as they are suppose to do to inform their viewers. Where are they in looking at campaign contributions, backgrounds of these candidates, allegiances that they had to take for endorsements and reporting on them? Where is the reports on voting record, attendance at work sessions, etc on incumbents? You reported on these Alliance meetings, where was the reporting of what these elected officials said? This is an important election and where are you? Build on the truth that has come out in district 2 so that all districts can know who is actually pushing the candidate and agenda for their district. We will be glad to share the data we have with anyone. Our system may need change, but change that benefits all districts and all children, not one district, some children and one person.

It is easy to throw darts when someone puts themselves out there. All people have to do is just check the facts. I have no interest in the back and forth rantings. Just thought it was time that someone spoke up for the truth. And not the kind of truth that is in the eye of the beholder. Actual factual truth which can be backed up with facts and witnesses.

OT--I actually kind of miss the Wiggles now that my kids are grown. We took them to a Wiggles concert and my 2 year old managed to run down and rush the stage. :-)

Tedesco chimes in

First, anyone who knows me, knows I am a strong individual guided by faith and passion. I have never been a pawn to anyone, ANYONE, except the children and parents of Wake County. That's a check you can take to the bank.

Second, as I said on air, as God's truth, and as Joe C. can attest, I never had private meetings with RON before being selected as a WSCA Candidate. I am starting to feel jealous and unloved (kidding). But with that said, I do value much of what he has supported, fiscal responsibility, parental choice, and increased quality in education.

Third, from day one I have been in support of the community schools model promoted by US Sec. of Ed. Arnie Duncan. WHY? Isn't that a Democrat plan? Aren't you the endorsed Republican? YES & YES
- So, Why? Because it's the right thing to do, and the only way to take our focus off this false sense of healthy schools and get to targeting students so we can save some of these children who are being swept under the rug or diluted among numbers of better socio-economic data that Wake is fortunate enough to have over all the other large districts. Then these children fall through the cracks at an alarming rate and then we usher them into prisons. WE can not continue to abandon these children.

As someone who lived this life and now lives it for thousands of our kids, why else would I support a move away from policy 6200? Unlike schools in the northeast where revenue is based on municipal tax we do have a county funded system. Thus we can ensure that every school receives equal funding regardless of the neighborhood is it in, and in some cases we can even prop up our most underserved schools with more resources and targeted strategies. This allows us to get to equity in education and raise these children up.

This safety net of the way we fund our schools is why I would not support breaking up the System and why I believe we can get great schools in ALL the communities where we ALL live. Along with the fact that our communities are more diverse than ever; a county wide central administration limited to coordinate funding, policy development, human resources and planning that is aligned with a community schools model that maintains regional controls and local assignment options would be a hybrid of the best of both worlds.

What if some of our schools have high poverty numbers? Then we may actually have to help them! The current 40% F&R number has nothing to do with diversity or success. This is a red herring. It is not a mirror of our county’s true poverty rate, our county’s true racial make-up, or a proven metric of student achievement that bests schools with 38% or 42%. SO why 40%? It’s the tail wagging the dog. This is a grant metric for federal funding models. The goal is to raise children out of poverty and get schools below that number. BUT WCPSS has used it in reverse for their own agenda. A decade ago we had 6 schools that crossed that threshold, today, over 50.

I thought we were such an affluent community and the policy was helping us attract a higher end growth?? Did we grow in so much poverty that fast? No, they shuffled our kids to dilute poor performance and chase dollars instead of targeting poverty with relevant educational tools and raising these kids up – thus condemning many of them for life. THIS must stop.

Next, what is this idea that we need to be divisive with our neighbors? District 2 is a large district and includes parts of Southeast Raleigh (where I was last night with parents upset that they were bussed away from Barwell to Westlake) , and parts of Holly Springs and even a small portion of Cary, as well as Garner and Fuquay. All my money, far less than that of the wealthy developers and real estate folks funding Cathy’s Campaign, came from those areas and in small increments. My effort to help our kids is funded by my neighbors, family, teachers, laborers, and stay at home moms, along with my personal investment. WSCA made a generous donation but it was raised in like manner. And all the people I have met from WSCA have been real parents who care – not power brokers. And I thank them all.

Cathy’s report is controlled by a small number of wealthy Garner folks who think they are power brokers and developers in our community; they think they can push us around with their money. They are joked about in Garner as the Garner Mafia, and tied to a variety of speculative dealings. They are the same power brokers that lost McHenry’s Campaign 4 years ago. They were mad, so they thought they recruited a ringer in Truitt’s 7 page pretentious resume, and she thought it would help her sell her consulting services to sit on the Board of the biggest system in the state. But they will lose again because our children and our communities deserve better.

Cathy, herself told me she promised her husband that she would only serve this one time and then move on to their other endeavors, as she told me how wonderful I was and asked me to wait a turn because I am young and can do it in 4 years after her turn. After she lost every single endorsement, she now claims she is Independent (that’s because no one will associate with her). And the reality is that this is a political board. The way she has escalated this will only marginalize her and hurt the people of District 2, because these people will not work with her now (it’s human nature) – they will box her in, shut her up, and make her completely ineffective. Garner and Fuquay will get passed over for 4 more years.

So to help her she has hired high dollar political guns and is losing to a young man knocking doors and shaking hands. How is this possible she says? Well, I was always taught that the eyes are the windows to your soul. So now she fumes and insults and makes false accusations – and then… wait, Brad Crone wrote a new script last week – she reads it close… and abracadabra. Now she is a sweet grandma with a lab who runs the house.

People just meet me, look me in the eyes, shake my hand and they can see the difference from Dr. Truitt. I am open, genuine, and accessible. My campaign cards have my number on it (919-701-9253, you will actually get Me - try it) and people say what if everyone calls you? I say, that is kind of the point as I am asking them to trust me with their children and their money. People are not looking for miracles out there; they just crave genuine leadership that understands them.

I am me. I am far from perfect and have made mistakes. But I will always be my own man according to God’s grace and my short-comings. I am running my own campaign. Say and write my own stuff (sometimes it’s not all that good, lol). I am using my funds more wisely to compete at the same level as my opponents and in that same manner that I would respect hard earned tax-dollars. I am committed to nothing more than our children. I ask every donor and supporter to pray for me. Those who know me, know I work tirelessly in this effort and am pressing hard for our families. And the bit of ego I do have is for my Steelers (because their number #1).

Ok, it is back to the Campaign trail for me. Press on bloggers – have fun. See you across the finish line on OCT. 6th.

This week: Wake School Board election

Posted: Today at 5:34 p.m.
Updated: Today at 5:36 p.m.

It's election day in Wake County next Tuesday but the vast majority won't vote.

We're On The Record talking about most significant local school board election since the 1970s.

Four seats on the board are at stake; only one incumbent is running.

The election has the potential to change long-standing policies regarding diversity, busing and neighborhood schools.

What is the solution? Is there one that is best? Or just better? When we look at the horizon for Wake County public schools, what do we see?

We'll talk with Ann Denlinger, president of the non-profit Wake Education Partnership. She is a former classroom teacher, principal and superintendent who worked in Wake, Wilson and Durham counties.

Also on the panel, Kathleen Brennan, representing Wake Cares. According to their Web site, the group, which has sued the school district over year-round school policies, believes "current assignment policies are failing our children and our school system."

Brennan has a child in the Wake County public school system.

Share your questions and concerns about school policies below. We'll ask our guests while they are On The Record Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on WRAL-TV.

I smell an inside job!

They just canned the debate because Debra's car was broken into.  How come not Lois'?  Did she know which side not to park on?  Come on, no way this is random.   Sorry you have to deal with this garbage Debra.

And out of the kindness of Lois' heart she said they could stop.  Then she doesn't have to answer any more questions with her clueless answers!  Mandatory is saving us $357 million Lois says.  Really Lois, PROVE IT!  Can you prove it Lois?  What about proof Lois, got any?

Karen Simon's campaign manager is now on filling the void, so I'll listen to car mechanic radio instead!

Can't wait until this story is fully disclosed.  Only Debra's car broken into my rump!  Didn't know WPTF was in such a crime district.  Maybe you should plan on security from now on for school board debates Bill!

Not the first attack

She had the side dented with a clear imprint of a shoe as well, a few weeks ago. Good thing she is a stalwart survivor. You're dealing with a fireman and EMT folks. This isn't going to shake her, if that was the intent.

There should be cameras on that property

and they should tell us if it was sabotage and my guess would be,

IT CERTAINLY WAS!  Lois Nixon was too quick to run off and avoid any further discussion!

nah, that Bill guy said on

nah, that Bill guy said on air that there aren't cameras but that there should be...

just be careful what you insinuate, g88.....

what I really want to know is why Perry was there and why he got to spew AGAIN???  that was a total FOUL, that time was for a DEBATE....not him "hawking his wares"...

If no cameras I would be taking it up

with Curtis Media as to why it's not safe to park on their property ESPECIALLY when you're an invited guest.  No security?  Is the parking lot in the woods?  This was just way too convenient.

I hope they dusted the car and I hope they catch the idiots!

Perry Is Always There Once A Week!

I don't know if today is his normal day, but Perry is always on the Bill LuMaye show once a week!  I believe Wednesday might be his regular slot!

really?  shows what I know,

really?  shows what I know, I don't listen to political crap anyway guess that's why I didn't know....only been listening to the candidates for this election....and will be golad when I don't have to listen to those shows anymore.

No Kidding!

No kidding..sometimes you want to jump through the radio and shout...do you really believe that!  I was very glad to hear Debra point out that YR schools do save money in theory, but here in Wake our YR ES are underutilized and they are currently costing money!  I know people that want to get into YR and can't!  Maddening!

YES, YES, YES, Debra made

YES, YES, YES, Debra made THAT point astoundingly clear!!!! and the BS about the a/c's???  good god, do they really believe people are that stupid?

I seriously can't wait to turn that crap off..... makes my skin crawl some of those shows on WPTF...

Best investment I have made

Best investment I have made lately was satellite radio for my car.  Get to listen to the music I like without a bunch of talking heads.  Until I started listening to these campaign shows I had forgotten just how many commercials they pack into an hour.

ha!  if I can ever get an

ha!  if I can ever get an income in this house again, I'd consider satellite, for now it's either Kidz Bop or the Wiggles CD's  :(

Debra was rocking the

Debra was rocking the interview which they had to halt...unbelieveable!!

jeez and now Perry gets

jeez and now Perry gets FREE AIR SPACE????  wth?  Dr. Grant again?  CMS vs. Wake AGAIN?

I call a giant FOUL!!!!  this isn't a debate, it's a political hack job again!!!

I can't comment about firing

I can't comment about firing Burns. I'm biased and not in a good way.

But, the other two assertions... dividing the district and ending diversity have long been on Ron's agenda. I can easily see them being part of the Republican vetting process. Dividing districts will decrease the funding available to address the needs in Southeast Raleigh, and increase the needs.

I like many of Tedesco's ideas. I can't support the agenda of his backers. Please vote to keep diversity AND address the challenges growth has placed on the system.

If you and Ms. Truitt did

If you and Ms. Truitt did your homework, you would understand that dividing up the school district is a matter for the state legislature and has nothing to do with the school board.

No WSCA candidates are suggesting that the school system be broken up, nor are they suggesting that Mr. Burns be fired.

Her milquetoast platform and self-serving accusations will be her undoing.

No one is against diversity.

No one is against diversity. People are against painful efforts to achieve a very narrowly defined and contrived version of diversity.  But, I do wonder why diversity at all costs is such a key priority...even above education, it seems. It is beyond obvious that the current policies are doing nothing to help students from low-income families achieve, which is the whole purpose of the reassignment for diveristy policy.

so is Ms. Mchenry the

so is Ms. Mchenry the "witness" at this meeting with Ron? while I CLEARLY understand the difference between a "blog" and an "article" without a NAME as proof, these are clearly unfounded accusations.....IF this is so TRUE, come forth with a name, why hide?

also, why spend so much time, Ms. Truitt et all fighting a battle with a BoE member who is NOT up for re-election? already know you lost your district? or just like to roll around in the mud?

Good question, why is she

Good question, why is she hiding the identity of this person?

So, can anyone write a

So, can anyone write a letter making unsubstantiated claims and get a blog and a headline here? McHenry essentially just got a free attack ad for her friend Truitt.

The letter ran here because

The letter ran here because the discussion has pretty much only taken place on the blog. It's more appropriate to run in the blog than to print it in the paper where people would wonder what the heck she was talking about.

That headline is definitely

That headline is definitely fanning some crazy flames. I trust it was the co-writer and not Keung that came up with that... Keung is principled and has integrity. He wouldn't say that.

It's never, ever been about throwing it ALL AWAY. It's about making reasonable, positive choices that take into account the needs of children, families, schools, teachers and communities. Take what is working and improve upon it. Clearly and objectively look at what is not working and WHY.

Don't be afraid of the issues. Understand them and attack them and RESOLVE them.

I read the headlines the

I read the headlines the same time you guys see them. I generally don't hang around the office until the end of the night when the headlines are created. Headlines are created by the copy desk.

Editorial Not Chosen for Publication - Real Story

Not happy with with N&O copy writers headlines today!
Submitted this to Steve Ford, never published it. When will the real stories get out?
Here is a real story about how the WCPSS diversity policy works. Maria
(not her real name)was a Latino 2nd grader living in Cary learning
English at Adams Elementary in Cary. Maria was bright but kept falling
asleep in class. Her teacher realized Maria didn’t have a bed to sleep
in, nor did her mother or brothers. School volunteers at Adams came
together to buy beds for Maria’s family; 7 people living in a 1 bedroom
apartment. After that, Maria stayed awake in class and made huge
academic gains. Maria gave me a big hug of thanks every week. It was a
heartwarming success story until 3rd grade. That was the year Maria and
her brothers were reassigned to another elementary school in Western
Wake County. Yep, a strong ESL school with a bilingual receptionist,
bilingual PTA newsletters and supportive families wasn’t good enough
for Maria. WCPSS knew better. They cherry picked Maria and her brothers
to go to a low F&R school with no ESL program. This is just one
example of how harmful the current WCPSS diversity policy can be to a
child. I will never forget Maria’s hugs and I will never vote for a
candidate that thinks the current WCPSS diversity policy works. It
doesn’t, ask Maria.
Barbara Walsh, Cary

and once again... this blog

and once again... this blog is whack sometimes!  The response above was actully a reply to g88 below... ugh.  It just decided to make it a top level response!

Ms. McHenry- pitting District against District is not the answer

I would suggest Ms. McHenry think LONG AND HARD about the implications of dividing this county and pitting district against district with her and Ms. Truitt's divisiveness.

I do not live in District 2 and neither do I live in D8, and I have given support to John Tedesco. I support John Tedesco because I support "at-risk" kids. I grow up in high poverty areas and in successful community based schools that focused on student achievement. I, like Mr. Tedesco, understood that education was my ticket up and out. As a result, I became upwardly socioeconomically mobile. I now donate to Big Brothers, Big Sisters for which Mr. Tedesco is a VP, among other community service organizations that serve more people in D2 than the part of Wake in which I reside.

Ms. McHenry, as you and Ms. Truitt apparantly take offense to support from other portions of the county, should I stop donating to the community service organizations that serve the citizens in D2 simply because I do not happen to reside there???

BTW - you do realize that D8 and D2 adjoin one another correct? In other words, you are neighbors.

Ms. McHenry was not at the

Ms. McHenry was not at the meeting.

Umm...

Where in that letter does Ms. McHenry say that she's a witness? She says that Truitt has a witness (para 1), but I don't see where Ms McHenry claims to be that witness.

My bad on that. I'm

My bad on that. I misread that sentence in the letter. I'm correcting. But her assertions about Margiotta, Tedesco and the WSCA still stand.

Assertions are now truths at the N&O?

Your bad?  I think your bad is having the headline shoved on the front page of the N&O today that you do!  Do you write your own headlines or are you told what to call these prop pieces?

As for this crap, I'm SICK of it ALL!  Truitt is nothing but a say anything, do anything flawed candidate.  McHenry is nothing but a $hit starter and a failed candidate from years gone by and she adds nothing to today's reality! ZERO!

I'll be SO glad when this race is over.  People like Rakestraw, Nixon, Simon, Perry and a few others prove to me Wake County loves them some political divisiveness and as long as their precious diversity stays intact that's all that matters.  You couldn't put those 4 mentioned above in a closet and come out with a sweater!

One more week and then Wake County can either put up or shut up.  It'll either be "diversity be damned" or more of the same and parents will have a choice to make.  Deal with it or move!  If Wake County voters prove they are spineless and could care less by allowing these elections to be bought by Stan and his bunch and Perry and his spin I'll have had enough!
