Wake County school board member Deborah Prickett focused on what they're looking for in school board candidates during her speech at last Thursday's Northern Wake Republican Club meeting.
During her speech, without mentioning her by name, Prickett made it clear that they're not counting on getting board vice chairwoman Debra Goldman's vote. Prickett said they "need some help" to "come up with the winning vote to make things happen here in Wake County."
"We've got to be able to know that we have people that are of the same mindset and are of the same mission and have the same goals and the same values so that together we can hold strong and come up with that winning vote to make things happen here in Wake County.
So we are looking for our schools, we're going to continue looking for someone who feels like they want to give our kids stability. They want to give our families choice and proximity. They're the things that we're looking for and we haven't changed. It's the same things we said when you helped us get in office and we're the same today."
She compared the controversy on the school board to what's going on with critics of the new Republican-led General Assembly who are engaged in "the screaming and the hollering and slow down, and you know don't push too far, don't go too quick."
"We have never had a hidden agenda," Prickett said. "It's just the same thing, the same thing today as it was then.
We're looking for people who really care about families and who really care about student achievement. That they want to give our hard-earned tax dollars. We want them appropriated in the right way. They can really look at a budget and get the most we can out of the money that we all put forth.
We're looking for people who really, when they make a decision, when they're voting that they really care about people. They're not in some back room making a deal and they're voting their commitment and their conscience, not voting with so-and-so who's going to give me something down the road or I'm trying to be chairman of a committee or I'm trying to get some sort of perfect school for my neighborhood or whatever. We're here to represent everyone here in this county. That's what we're looking for so we do need some help."
Prickett made what could be interpreted as a slip of the tongue as she closed out her remarks.
"I want to stay all positive tonight because we've done so much," Prickett said. "I can't believe how we've changed things. I know John's (Tedesco) going to talk about that some more tonight too.
We can do this. We just need a couple of more votes and now we're just going to push things just way over the cliff. We're going to go way over it."
WakeEd
The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?
WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Is that a good thing?

Unless you think that this was a Freudian slip, this is simply a matter of someone speaking in front of a large audience and getting a little tongue-tied. Do you do much public speaking? Can you get up in front of a room full of people and deliver a speech?
I can just imagine the Pope conspiracy theorists printing their next flyer, quoting Prickett's statement as proof that Pope is the spawn of satan and he is using her to bring plague upon our school system. We still hear about the "animals" comment from time to time.

Mon, 04/25/2011 - 21:13 — magnetParentLol - as if being a politician makes you more qualified to speak in front of a large audience? I've heard many politicians say some pretty dumb things. If I know that I am going to get up in front of a room full of people, I would likely have my speech prepared and written down. Though I realize that everybody can get tongue-tied.
I didn't say it was a Freudian slip - just that it's comical that it was worded that way. But, as you suggest, it could come in handy during re-election time ;-) I wonder if Steven Colbert could use this material ;-)
Still picturing lemmings...
