WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Dealing with the missed final exams

Bookmark and Share

It could be a tough next two days ahead for high school students.

As noted in today's article, the cancellation of school for the past two days will mean rescheduling final exams for Wake's 39,000 high school students. The option that schools could use to solve the problem won't be a pretty one for students.

The option being considered by many high schools, assuming school resumes tomorrow, is to have Tuesday's exams on Thursday.

But on Friday, students would likely have to take the exams that were originally scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. This means taking a pair of three-hour exams that day.

“It wouldn’t be my favorite thing to take two exams in the same day, but that’s really not my decision,” said Katie Slay, 17, a Wakefield High School junior.

It's obviously not the preferred option. That's why schools normally only have kids take one final exam a day. But doubling the exams on Friday would mean that teachers have exams in for most of the kids for Monday's work day.

The alternative to doubling up on Friday would be to ask the school district for permission to push the testing into next week.

Michael Evans, Wake's chief communications officer, said it's being left up to individual schools how to handle the missed finals.

Bugs me...

Okay this should make you all happy. I finally am annoyed my Evans last company. This is a significant point that was identified in the curriculum audit - too much autonomy at the individual schools. letting the schools determine how they are going to make up the tests could lead to much different results. This is an example of where I believe the system should day 'This is is how we will do it and all schools will follow this process'. But again, this might be the one time you all agree with it and still crucify me.

1977

Winter exams -January 1977 in Rhode Island were put on hold twice because of the bad weather. The only good thing about that was they had 5 snow days built into their calender so we didn't make the days up during spring break!

Livin' the dream

I admit it, I dreamed about this happening in high school.  LOL- I know the conscientious students who really studied are not happy about this, but what can you do?
