Is it a fluke or some other reason that Wake County school bus accidents have seen a sharp rise so far this year?
As noted in today's article by Thomasi McDonald, there have been 57 school bus accidents since Jan. 1. Wake normally averages a dozen accidents a month.
School officials say they don't know why there's been such a spike in accidents that have left 14 students and drivers injured so far this year, none seriously.
There's a big incentive to cut down on these accidents. When a bus driver is cited in an accident, the other motorist can file a financial claim with the N.C. Department of Justice.
Which means it was very timely that the school system announced Wednesday that their transportation department is partnering with the state Department of Motor Vehicles to improve school bus safety.
Starting next month, DMV trainers will lead monthly classes with the school bus drivers. The goal of the classes will be to sharpen driver skills with in-depth sessions specifically tailored to school bus drivers.
