The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system: the reassignment of thousands of students, the conversion of traditional-calendar schools to a year-round schedule, the district's response to growth and the school construction program.
WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.
Wake isn't the only school district waiting on the state Supreme Court's decision on the year-round school case.
ENCToday.com is reporting that Craven County school officials have decided to postpone surveying parents about year-round calendars until the high court makes a decision.
Craven County's three year-round schools have attendance areas. If you're in one of those areas, you can go to a traditional-calendar school but you don't get transportation.
According to the article, the form asks parents which calendars they have children on, what calendar they prefer and whether they want to change calendars. School officials said the form would only be used as a way to get information.
"Sending out a survey about a calendar we don't know if we can change gives a false hope or a false distress," said Carr Ipack, chairman of the Craven County school board, in the article. "We're waiting to get a Supreme Court answer. The guess is that they will confirm the appeals ruling."
The court case drew friend-of-the-court briefs backing Wake from the N.C. Association of School Administrators, the N.C. School Boards Association and the N.C. Council of School Attorneys.
It's possible the state Supreme Court could announce a decision next Wednesday.

Take Survey and MAKE NECESSARY CHANGES
Wed, 08/20/2008 - 14:35 — Lisa_B"Sending out a survey about a calendar we don't know if we can change gives a false hope or a false distress,"
I would agree with that statement IF IT WAS TRUE. However, if the School Board doesn't have the ability to make the calendar change, WHO DOES???
Why CAN'T they change the calendar? In Wake County, they CAN and SHOULD, regardless of that Supreme Court's decision. VYR was working well. MYR is a dismal failure and huge waste of money...day by day, dollars are being wasted with each ticking of the clock.
(IF IF IF they really cared about the families...guess we'll just have to wait and see!)
Amazing!!!!
Wed, 08/20/2008 - 11:34 — choice4allGo figure. A BOE that asks clear cut questions where the answers cannot be skewed...What a concept! IMHO if the Supreme Court sides with WCPSS, then it is clear we have become a socialist society. Another attempt for big brother to control our lives without our permission. The above mentioned school system at least attempts to consult their families before forceing, blackmailing, cohercing...they asked or at least were going too. These simple 3 questions can be done in English AND in Spanish and they are pretty brainless. However our leaders with their social agenda would not like the answers. ONCE AGAIN WE DO NOT WANT FORCED YEAR ROUND!!!!
holy considering parents, Batman
Wed, 08/20/2008 - 10:22 — bigwinnieWhen the board adopted a 2008-09 year-round calendar Dec. 13 for pupils at Arthur W. Edwards and Havelock elementaries and Tucker Creek Middle School, it also unanimously voted to survey parents before voting for next year's calendars.
"The issue is not whether year-round calendars are good or bad or whether traditional calendars are good or bad," said Carr Ipock, the board chairman. "The issue is the potential for an added hardship if a parent has children on two or more tracks."
The board decided during a work session Monday to postpone sending the survey forms.
Wake County schools have been weighing calendar options to deal with growth in the area, Ipock said. An original law said that systems had the authority to set different calendars, he said.
But a more recent state law put restrictions on when a school can begin and end a year, said Annette Brown, Craven's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
Craven County schools' calendar questionnaire was ready to be sent, said Anetta Davenport, the director of public relations. The form asks parents which calendars they have children on, what calendar they prefer and whether they want to change calendars, Davenport said. The survey was only an attempt to gather information, and it would not have affected the calendar until the 2009-10 year, she said.
thanks so much!
