WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Converting and unconverting schools

Bookmark and Share

The school board has agreed to switch Baucom and Green Hope elementary schools back to a traditional calendar.

Baucom will switch back from a year-round calendar for the 2009-10 school year. Green Hope won't make the move until Alston Ridge Elementary opens. It's schedule to open for the 2010-11 school year.

But in a surprise to some board members, they're also now considering today whether to convert Leesville Road Middle School to a year-round calendar.

Chuck Dulaney, assistant superintendent for growth and planning, said converting Leesvllle would meet the demands from year-round elementary parents for calendar continuity.

Dulaney said that more than 70 percent of Leesville's students come from year-round elementary schools.

Dulaney said Carroll and West Millbrook middle schools could serve as traditional calendar options for Leesville.

But some board members questioned voting today because they hadn't expected Leesville would be brought up by staff. Staff first mentioned the idea earlier this year.

The discussion on whether to vote was delayed by a fire alarm that briefly forced the evacuation of the building. The board is now back inside and having lunch.

Also today, the board voted against switching Salem Elementary back to a traditional calendar.

UPDATE

Click here for the online story. The board voted 7-1 to convert Leesville with Margiotta as the lone dissenter.

Baucom should have never been converted in the first place and t

and now, all of us VOLUNTARY YEAR-ROUND PARENTS AND FAMILIES are forced to re-apply because the BOE won't automatically assign us to another YR school!  Forced out of our YR schools, then forced out of MYR schools, then forced to reapply.  Shall i bend over and make it easier for them?

Agree, Morticia

How many times can the former VYR parents in this area get slapped in the face?  Guess we'll also have to compete for track selection too so that our elem. kids can get the same track as their YR middle school siblings.  This situation get more ridiculous every day.

Is there a way to impeach Patti Head?

She obviously does not represent the people in her district. We have more than enough evidence to prove that fact. Seriously, is there a way to kick her out of office before her term is due?

Is there a way to impeach Patti Head?

Seriously --is there a way to get Patti out of office?  Can we call an emergency District 7 meeting and conduct a vote to get her A$$ out ASAP? She is a LIAR!!  She is a self centererd witch and is only concerned about pushing her own agenda through despite what her district wants. She lied to get elected and continues to do the opposite of what families in her district ask for.  She needs resign or get kicked out.  We are sick of being "taxed without representation".  If they refuse to honor the majority then it is only fair they provide us with vouchers so that we can choose a school and use OUR tax money to put our children in a school that meets our families needs.  We should not be forced to do what some bimbo thinks is right when she doesn't even have children in this school system.  This is insane. She is insane and an ego maniac.  If she thinks she was set up at LES --she is setting herself up to be publicly humiliated with an impeachment...how do you like that Patti?

Sure, we can physically

Sure, we can physically remove her from her seat at the next open meeting.  Any takers?

She's a communist and vacations in China every chance she gets.  Need we say more?

The botox won't help you a bit when we get through with you at bond time Ms. Won Ton Head!

Traditional Option if Leesville Middle is converted....

What will be the traditional option for Leesville Middle if it is converted to MYR.

Not if, it HAS

Not if, it HAS BEEN!

TimBuckTwo is the opt out!

Traditional options

It's in the post. Depending on where you live, it will either be Carroll or West Millbrook.

Thank you ncarolinagirl

for your succinct thoughts on the TCE predicament. I'd like to think we would all get automatically transferred back. BOE owes us that at least.

Thanks, Morticia.  I just

Thanks, Morticia.  I just read below that Laurel Park will be the VYR option for Baucom.  This doesn't surprise me at all.  They were so adament that Turner Creek families couldn't stay there and only approved 5 transfers allowing children to stay.

If the BOE and Dulaney had listened to TCPU 2 years ago, not only would alot of people have less heartache today, but Wake County taxpayers could've saved over $700,000, as well.  The cost of conversions in Apex was over $1.1 million - the cost of the pod at Turner Creek was $366,000.  I'll bet they're all now thinking hindsight is 20/20.

What is the YR option to be

What is the YR option to be given to Baucom families who want to stay YR? I had thought Turner Creek was pretty full this year?

YR option

Dulaney said Laurel Park would be the year-round option for Baucom. Carpenter would be the year-round option for Green Hope.

Thanks for the info Keung.

Thanks for the info Keung. Did Ron ask for any other schools to be converted back? Has Lori Millberg asked for Knightdale yet? I thought that one was on the table, too.

Also, was there any word on how converting Baucom back to traditional will affect the feeder pattern into middle school? Many of the Apex neighborhoods were reassigned to Lufkin Middle (year round) as their base when the MYR conversions went through. Lufkin used to be a VYR school. Now, with Baucom being converted to traditional, many people will have split schedules unless they're able to get a traditional middle school seat at Apex Middle, which is pretty full.

Any mention of the former VYR Turner Creek kids who got sent "back to base" to Baucom and will now be converted to traditional? There were about 100 of them.  The Turner Creek Parents United group warned the BOE and Dulaney of this scenario 2 years ago and suggested expanding VYR at Turner Creek rather than converting all of the Apex schools. By adding a pod at Turner Creek (which is now there to house additional f&r students), there would've been enough capacity to expand VYR and keep all of the Apex schools traditional. Unfortunately, the BOE didn't listen (except Ron), and now we're stuck with the mess we have today with converting, unconverting, messed up feeder patterns, and split schedules.   I'm not against having Baucom go back to traditional - I just wish it had never been converted to year round to begin with.  It would've saved alot of trouble for alot of people.

Baucom

Dulaney says nothing can be done with the feeder pattern for Baucom until 2010-11 when two new middle schools open in the area. The alternative that the board didn't seem to relish to provide quicker relief in 2009-10 would be a mass reassignment to move Olive Chapel's middle school nodes from Apex Middle to a year-round middle school. Then they could move Baucom to Apex.

Millberg decided not to ask for any Knigthdale schools after hearing from parents worried about calendar continuity due to lack of nearby traditional calendr middle school options.

Thanks, Keung, for the info

Thanks, Keung, for the info on this question, too.  I was thinking along the same lines that the only way to fix the feeder patterns to have consistent calendars would be to swap some of the Lufkin and Apex Middle nodes.  Yes, there would be more reassignments, but rising 7th and 8th graders would be grandfathered and it would fix the split schedule problem once the current middle schoolers age out into high school.  They should put the question to the Apex citizens and let them "pick their poison."

hey hey hey, fattttt Albert!

no big surprise here, but I bet the Leesville middler's will NOT once again be a happy bunch. Sorry Lisa B.
Folks it's just simply time to remove your kids from public schools in this county and withhold that amount from your property taxes when they come due. Say you can't do that?
With the economy the way it is YOU can do anything YOU want!
YOU sure can!

Keung, Who brought up Salem

Keung, Who brought up Salem Elem. as a possible school to switch? It's one of the fullest out of the converted schools in Apex and it feeds into Salem Middle, which is also year round. I guess I don't understand why this school was mentioned.

Salem

Margiotta proposed converting back Salem after the votes on Baucom and Green Hope. He had been unsuccessful in trying to get the board to have a group vote on schools. Board members wanted to vote individually on schools.

How did.....

How did Green Hope get on the list.  That is in one of the fastest growing areas of Wake County.   It has that cheap odor of local politics all over it.  Maybe a little "payoff" to Cary Town Council for now ignoring all the school problems they were elected to fix?

Yes Harold, we will never forgive nor forget, how you sold Cary/Western Wake out to Rosa "the Hood."   Just watch the video below and cross out the word "Britney" and exchange with "WCPSS," because that was pretty much the way Mayor Harold was when he sold us out that cold, dark night:

It is perfectly ok to bash someone when it is self-inflected.

Green Hope

Margiotta had suggested Highcroft. But Dulaney said Green Hope would be a better choice. He said Green Hope isn't growing as much as Highcroft. He also said Green Hope will be emptied out when Alston Ridge opens. Additionally, he said that Green Hope feeds into a traditonal-calendar middlle school while Highcroft goes to a year-round middle school. Margiotta accepted Green Hope to at least get one more school switched back.

I can't imagine why it would

I can't imagine why it would be a surprise to anyone they're thinking about converting LRMS to year round.  I've said for the last year that it would surprise me if they didn't change the middle school.  I believe it's partly out of spite (IMHO, there are some parents who have just been too outright and in their faces about MYO) and partly because they don't want the massive reassignment that may be needed without changing the school.  Either way, it's going to create more adversity and chaos in the area.

Why Continue To Punish Leesville?

Is it true that Patti Head was actually the one to sacrifice LRMS?

What does that tell us about her character?

Adversity? Chaos?

Adversity and Chaos?  They haven't seen anything yet.

Knowing Leesville they will come together even stronger and Patti Head will be forced to admit that she does not care who she hurts.  Never will admit her mistake.  Can you at Leesville get her removed from office?

Good luck Leesville.  You have a valid argument.

Question.. Do I get a

Question.. Do I get a reimbursment check for my WASTED TAX DOLLARS with this MYR fiasco?

 NO MORE BONDS!

Remember how desperate they were... we had to vote for the bond to convert schools or the world would come to an end. All you "selfish" residents out there would be denying children education.

Yeah right, WCPSS is equitible!  Either unconvert them all or don't ...... stop WASTING OUR MONEY!

NO MORE BONDS NO MORE BONDS NO MORE BONDS until this "regime" changes hands!
