WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Common Sense Matters targeting Ron Margiotta and Heather Losurdo again

Bookmark and Share

Common Sense Matters and the N.C. Futures Action Fund have teamed up for another round of new fliers attacking Wake County school board chairman Ron Margiotta and candidate Heather Losurdo.

This new campaign mailer sent Wednesday says "there are $80 million reasons to reject Ron Margiotta's Tea Party agenda." They're focusing on how the U.S. Department of Education could as a last resort cut Wake's federal funding as a result of the civil rights complaint filed by the NAACP.

"If Wake County schools lose $80 million in funding, the impact would be devastating," according to the flier. "But Wake County School Board Chairman Ron Margiotta jeopardized $80 million in federal school funding."

This new campaign mailer, also sent Wednesday, says "on October 11, stop the Tea Party takeover of Wake County's Schools by stopping Heather Losurdo." Interestingly, Losurdo's flier doesn't mention Kevin Hill but Margiotta's flier does mention Susan Evans.

Great Stuff!

More proof they are scared. They are targeting two races with ugly hit pieces. It's okay you wouldnt spending so much money if you were leading.  I think they forgot Donna Williams she is doing an awesome out there.

Not an accurate view from Wake Forest

According to Kushner's Facebook page, she has 1000 signs in voter's yards, and ordered more for a backlog of requests and for the main roads.  Williams decided to put signs in the right of ways - ahead of the October 1 date.   Last time I checked, right of ways don't vote.  Even in her own neighborhood, Williams has signs in less than 10 yards, while Kushner has many, many more. (As reviewed by Mrs. Paint on her way to a Kushner meet and greet last week).  Reviewing Williams' first donation filing, the bulk of her donations came from outside District 6 (Yes, Mrs. Paint checked). Kushner is supported financially very strong  from her own district, with money ITB and OTB. Kushner had a very successful meet and greet in William's back yard last week, organized by strong schools supporters of both political partes. (Yes, Mrs. Paint was there, was charmed by the neighborhood and drove around taking note of the number of Williams signs. Looks like we may be moving). The word in District 6 is not who will win, but by how much Kushner will sweep District 6.  The Lacy forum sealed it for those in attendance. No one wore a Williams button. Kushner stickers donned many.

As a parent I am scared....

Our children certainly do not need anymore of your brand of myoptic short-term pseudo-leadership.  Your McDonald's plan for rezoning was a disaster for rim schools.  It looked as though you & JT bought a box of crayons and just colored between the lines (major roads) in Wake County.

Go ahead and pull a Palin.  Resign so that we can move forwards - not backwards.

Good Luck

Mr. Malone in parlaying your Board of Education Service into a Legislative seat.   Nothing like using our schools and students as a stepping stone for a promising political career.  It will have the added benefit of putting you in an enviornment more suited to your temperment.  A partisan one.

You tell him Whaler the

You tell him Whaler the Hack...he should follow in the footsteps of Rosa Gill, BOE Chair and leader of the local Democrat party. She waited to be appointed to a seat in the GA rather than run on her own merits. But since she has a D behind her name, I guess she  is invisible to you.

I sad Good Luck, and meant

I sad Good Luck, and meant it.  I do not blame him.  I would not wish serving on that Board on my worst enemy.  It's just preferential to have people serving not looking at their next office.  I know that none of the democratic candidates running now will seek another office.

No other recent board members have sought higher office except Ms. Gill, and she had ten years of service on the Board before accepting the appointment.  She stepped down from Board then and did not campaign while serving.

I'm fine if Mr. Malone runs, but he should consider stepping down the moment he files.

?

Do you ask your clients to step down from the office they hold before running for another office? I didn't think so...

I am sure Mr. Malone is relieved that you are fine if he runs, and would bet he doesn't really care what you think he should consider. Considering your track record during the last election, you save your advice for those who seek it.

I would not work for a

I would not work for a school board member seeking another office unless they stepped down.

School Board is different than other elected bodies.

As much as I wish I could take responsiblity for it, I had little to do with the outcome of the last election.  I would happily take all the blame for it, and fall on my sword if it stopped the maddness and irresponsible non- evidence based leadership we have witnessed.

Likewise I will not have had much impact on this years reversals that are coming.

?

Victory has a thousand fathers defeat is an orphan...So you were not involved with any of the BOE candidates in '09?

I was

involved in some ways with all of them.  This year I'm involved in some ways with all of them.  I am not arrogant enough to believe I am determinative in either case.

That does not change my basic premise of I would not work for a school board candidate seeking another office unless they resigned.

Enough fun.  Good night now.

Your check is in the mail Keungie

Keep spreading their propaganda Keung.  I really do hope they are very generous with their thank yous for all your help.  You should up your fee during the week prior to Oct 11.

Agent P.

I get your point, but it is undermined when you say nothing about him posting Heather Losurdo's video just before this post.  That is 'speading' her right wing tea party proganda.  Should she be sending him a check as well?

As well, this stuff is mailed for a reason.  To be targeted.  Keung posting it to a wide audience does not really help them.
