WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Closing the achievement gap conference

Bookmark and Share

On a less controversial note this morning, the school system is encouraging parents to attend a conference on closing the achievement gap.

Karen Mapp, one of the authors of "Beyond the Bake Sale: The Essential Guide to Family-School Partnerships" is the headlined speaker at the event.  The Making Powerful Connections To Eliminate the Achievement Gap conference will be held Aug. 13 at the McKimmon Center at N.C. State.

Also at the conference, Wake County educators will discuss elementary school mathematics, taking part in effective parent-teacher conferences and navigating the school system.

There is limited space available. Registration is on a “first come, first serve” basis. A waiting list will be established. If you have questions, call Ann Rollins 854-2644.

I'm afraid all they will do is preach to the choir

What percent of the parents that they are targeting will attend? 1 or 2 %? I would like to know. They need to talk tough and offend some parents. After all they offend the rest of us all the time.

Bottom line: More Money, More Money, More Money.....

When all the BS is said and done, it will amount to nothing more than MORE MONEY for education. I'm sick and tired of throwing good money after bad. Accept the fact that 50% (plus) will never finish high school and that 80% of all jobs in America only require a 7th grade education.

Seems to me that 20 million plus uneducated illegal aliens seem to have no problem finding work. Oh, also why are wages for college grads going down? Why are wages in general, going down? Why are taxes going up. Something isn't right here, or is it just me.

Ummm

How lovely....so is it the parents' fault that the children are failing F&R testing?  This speaker is just reinforcing the WCPSS mantra of self-serving the beauracracy and not serving the children and the families...

So will the parents of the failing F&R children be able to take a day off work and attend this seminar?  How about the parents of the F&R children that are bussed all over the county that can't even make it to school conferences?

How about the other compenent area that WCPSS is failing?  The black population????  How will this program help them?

Instead of making the system more available to the parents, let's tell the parents how to navigate a complicated system.

Instead of celebrating that these parents are doing the best they can, let's tell them they aren't doing enough.

Let's bus their kids away from their homes so parent-teacher conferences are a burden instead of bringing the conferences closer to the family.

Oh yea, let's make it "first come, first serve" so this conference will fill up with Wake Ed folks, PTA officers and WCPSS drones....

Take the programs to the children...teach the individual child...quit strutting around like a peacock in heat WCPSS.
