WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

CCCAAC says Wake County students should all get the same second chance as Panther Creek High cheaters

Bookmark and Share

The Coalition of Concerned Citizens for African American Children says that all Wake County students deserve the same second chance that's been given to the Panther Creek High School students who were caught cheating.

In this press release today, CCCAAC points to school officials having called the Panther Creek students who were allowed to take an alternative exam instead of getting a zero "good kids." The CCCAAC asks "how many children have received 0’s when caught cheating and failed the class for the year because they were not given a second chance?"

The CCCAAC alleges racism in Wake not moving ahead with the grading review, writing that "discrimination, SEGREGATION occurs when students do not receive the same opportunities for achieving mastery and equity when being evaluated on graded activities."

"Are these students at Panther Creek more deserving of a second chance because they are from an affluent family and viewed as UPPER Middle Class students who attend one of the top schools in the nation?" the CCCAAC writes. "...All students deserve the same opportunities even if CAUGHT CHEATINIG (sic)!!"

Did the PCHS students get a

Did the PCHS students get a second chance because of their economic status? Or because they don't have a string of past infractions unlike, possibly, other students? I wonder if CCCetc is indulging in a fashionable racist rant or has some facts to substantiate the press release.

OT

If the CCCAAC and Rev Barber desire to  be really effective, they should plant themselves outside the Chapel Hill offices of the African-American Studies department and demand some answers to this awful mess.

He's too busy ranting against Amend1

but after today he'll be free.

Free after today

What makes you think he will be free after today ?  The battle is just beginning.

As I said, free

Amen1 passed easily, now he can fight for the spanish speakers, maybe the cheaters and who knows, even parents who demand their transportation rights.

Is this real

Given the awkward phrasing, poor writing, and even misspellings, does anyone believe this is a legitimate "press release"?  I'm not familiar with the organization purporting to have released this mess, but it is not done well at all.  I'm wondering why N&O deemed to give this any coverage whatsoever -- unless it was for the sensationalism.

Got half of it right

They got half of it right, they should have a consistent policy across the school district to ensure equal application of how to handle things like this and consistent punishment.  They got it wrong in that the punishment should not include retaking or redo what they cheated on, it should be getting a 0.    Having a retest is like giving everybody a trophy for participating and not just the team that won, we wouldn't want to hurt anybody's feelings.   They cheated and if there is evidence that shows it, they should get a 0.   Maybe they will really learn from the experience.

So you are for doing away

So you are for doing away with the No Zero policy whereas CCCAAC seems to want it to go district-wide.  Would PCHS even use a no zero policy if they didn't serve a significant population of struggling students?    I would like to know which HS use which of the two (0 vs. No Zero) policies and why.

disagree totally

CCCAAC you're way off base here.  Not only is it WRONG for those Panther Creek students to get a second chance on the exam or any other student in WCPSS that cheats...

How can you assume that they are from an affluent family?  I don't know if they are or not, but that is wrong to group kids or assume they are something because they live somewhere or attend a certain school.

And I'm going to stretch this even more...since you think "All students deserve the same opportunities even if CAUGHT CHEATING"---

Are you against magnet schools then when so many of the base kids are segregated in classrooms from the "magnet" kids?  To me that's really inequity and how about all those kids that don't attend the magent schools and have no chance at all to attend those "special" classes b/c their school does not even offer those classes...

Any media want to follow up with that question to the CCCAAC?
