The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system: the reassignment of thousands of students, the conversion of traditional-calendar schools to a year-round schedule, the district's response to growth and the school construction program.
WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.
The school board has just announced Superintendent Del Burns' new contract.
The board voted to give Burns a raise of 4 percent. They tacked one percent on the 3 percent automatic raise he receives annually.
This $10,500 raise means he'll get a base salary of $273,000. With his benefits, his total annual compensation package will be $312,790.
The board also extended his contract one year through June 30, 2012.
Board members praised Burns for his work pushing forward the curriculum management audit.
The vote was 7-1 with Ron Margiotta as the only dissenter.

another question

Wed, 09/03/2008 - 20:07 — H2OGuyNO...teachers did not get a 3% raise.
The way this works every time, is the rate of the raise that is published is always an AVERAGE raise for the teachers....meaning....based on years of experience only a few of the "steps" actually got 3%. This year as usual they give those teachers with 2, 3 and 4 years experience the larger percentage. Then as you move away from 5 up to 30 the percentage drops to the 2's...and then down to the 1's...those "dedicated" teachers that have stuck through the job through the thick and thin....get the least. LOL....now isn't that fair!!!
Reason #2012
Wed, 09/03/2008 - 09:00 — g88ky07Keep giving Del all the money you want Rosa and idiots, we'll be adding that to our now 2012 reasons NOT to support ANY future bonds for you liars!
Take it away from the teachers and give it to Del, what a policy!
So if we take the extra
Wed, 09/03/2008 - 08:17 — Anonymous (not verified)So if we take the extra amount the board is now charging the high schoolers for parking, that should cover Burns raise. No wonder they had to change the policy.
motivate him? seriously,
Wed, 09/03/2008 - 07:15 — bigwinniemotivate him? seriously, what could motivate him at this point? Why would he even NEED motivation, he gets more money ANYWAY apparently......with rates dropping, projections off, class sizes in some cases over-crowded, MYR's underenrolled, the man isn't held to any sort of accountability apparently and gets a percentage point above standard after tremendous budget "shortfalls"....could it get any more ludicrous?
What on earth??
Wed, 09/03/2008 - 07:03 — Bob_SconceWhy on earth did they pay more than the bare minimum 3%? Test scores and graduation rates have both gone down. If he gets a raise regardless of performance, how are they going to motivate him?
You know, some of the people
Tue, 09/02/2008 - 22:20 — H2OGuyYou know, some of the people on this blog I use to think were complainers, but guys I am sooooooooo wrong. I have steadily seen over time what you guys are concerned with. You do have reason to be concerned with things and so does every resident of Wake Co. It's a shame more and more people don't see it. OH..and God Bless Ron! He's the man. He's a true Politician! He actually represents the people that elected him. such a shame that he is one of very view in his position that has the moral ethics to say and do what is right.
Welcome H2O Guy
Tue, 09/02/2008 - 22:30 — Lisa_BHey H2O Guy: (great name!)
Welcome to the "club". Now, we just need to get the media to see the light so that they'll help make all Wake County taxpayers aware of what a MESS we've got with WCPSS' policies and procedures. Keung does a great job, but we need some real INVESTIGATIVE reporting to EXPOSE it all...
I've spoken to more and more taxpayers without children in the system lately. They had believed the "spin" until recently, and they, too, are seeing that it's all lies---very HURTFUL lies. (and very wasteful too)
You would think that WCPSS would take this opportunity to make some family-friendly changes so that they can mend some of the relationships they've destroyed over the past few years. While I'd like to believe they will, I won't hold my breath.
Instead of working with the kids and only raising parking fees a TINY amount, they won't admit they were wrong. They won't agree with the kids who are concerned that parking fees aren't being applied where they're supposed to be applied, they'll just change the wording of the policy instead and "stick it to 'em". SO SAD.
We need more Ron M's, but we'll have to just keep appreciating the 1 we've got for now.
exactly! Not surprising at
Tue, 09/02/2008 - 22:16 — H2OGuyexactly!
Not surprising at all! Keep pouring the money in the pockets of the people that are doing NOTHING! Then take away money or I should say, reduce the amount of the money from the pockets of the people that's doing all the work. It's time for a change, and a big change at that! He should not receive any raise higher than the lowest raise that a teacher received this year!
HUI???
Tue, 09/02/2008 - 21:59 — Forget_not_the_...What was Dels raise last year? Seems to me 5% is popping in my head...and if that is so, this raise is not a huge vote of BOE approval in my book.
A Slap in Ye Ol' FACE!
Tue, 09/02/2008 - 20:48 — RiversideRealistThat's EXACTLY what it is. I think it's a deliberate slap in the face to those parents watching (or, as they would call it, "whining about") how the $$ is spent -- "Here ya go parents. TAKE THAT. And SCREW your AG kids. Oh, and to you teachers: Screw you, too. No PROMISED bonus for you."
I would say it's unbelievable, but, really, it doesn't surprise me in the least.
I cannot say enough how glad I am to be away from the Funny Farm that is WCPSS.
Here's your $10k gift
Tue, 09/02/2008 - 20:43 — Dadof3This is despicable. That's a tenth of what that clown owns Wake County taxpayers.
God bless you, Ron.
Wake County; wake up. This is your call.
4% Raise
Tue, 09/02/2008 - 20:12 — For Crying Out Loud (not verified)Not surprising, but so disappointing. I would love to know the rationale.
4% raise
Wed, 09/03/2008 - 10:46 — HJ2ss2The rationale? It seems there doesn't need to be one. Staffing decisions within the system are all subjective. Based on who you know and a willingness not to leak the information about questionable practices.
Research shows the importance of teaching critical thinking skills as well as evidence that students are not taught to think. If the teachers are not free to use those skills in their job, without consequences, how can they be expected to teach it to their students?
It's quite an organization. Has some characteristics of a third world country. Teachers rarely express their discontent. If they do, they are likely to have a miserable year and no job to return to in the fall.
I believe this explains the raise. As it explains the dismissal of some wonderful educators as well as the reward (remaining in the system) some, average and possibly inferior teachers receive.
