Broughton High School is keeping its magnet program.
The school board unanimously voted today to keep Broughton as an International Baccalaureate magnet school. The vote came after intense lobbying by Broughton parents, which board members acknowledged, to save the magnet program.
Board members stressed the strong academic quality of Broughton's IB program.
UPDATE
The school board has also voted to keep the IB program at Enloe High School. While Enloe's magnet status was never in danger, Lori Millberg questioned whether it needed to be both a GT and IB school.

Lisa, I think I would focus
Thu, 10/23/2008 - 19:39 — raleighreaderLisa,
I think I would focus on Beverley Clark's comment "Year Round is a DRAIN on the system if it can't be fully utililzed". She made that comment more than once at that work session.
Not just parents
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 13:26 — Anonymous (not verified)It's not just parents. Was anyone awake enough to read what a Class of 2007 grad wrote in the op-ed section of the N&O?

Greg, thanks for taking the time to give us the student point of view.
It seems that the BOE made the correct educational decision regarding Broughton IB. If his "Point of View" is considered "intense lobbying", so be it.
All well-connected ITB
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 09:22 — NWRaleighMomAll well-connected ITB students will stay. Either as base students, or as transfer students.
Bad Journalism once again
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 22:12 — Anonymous (not verified)Mr Hui - You article implies that the Board made their decision solely based on the lobbying parents. I attended the School Board meeting and don't beieve that was the case at all. Yes they acknowledged the feedback they had received but when the discussion started it wasn't about the lobbying. Even the blog's precious Ron agreed.
No reason to get this blog more fired up with misinformation.
Where's the misinformation?
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 06:00 — fiestamomMr. Hui said there was "intense lobbying", and the board acknowledged it. What word misrepresents what happened? Acknowledged?
Yes, anonymous. We are rabid dogs out here, and we just wait for Keung to throw us red meat. We don't have legitimate concerns about social engineering!
Liberals. (shaking head)
I figured that Broughton
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 21:16 — raleighreaderI figured that Broughton would remain a magnet. There were some compelling arguments for keeping it one--well, really only one and that was the amount of money we've invested in the school.
I really doubt that they will have the guts to remove any of the well connected neighborhoods out of there though. Like somebody above said, it will be the OTB neighborhoods for sure and maybe some of the less expensive areas ITB.
Bus routes
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 20:28 — Anne (not verified)Here are the bus routes for Broughton.
Which of these "elite" neighborhoods are you thinking will be cut to make room for more magnet students?

Speaking only for myself -
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 06:21 — gwaihirSpeaking only for myself - I hope ALL of them get cut. The base should be no more than 40% of any magnet school, and the base should also be F&R / low income nodes. So I hope they re-draw the base to cover low-income ITB nodes, and bus in the F&R/low income high school kids from those nodes instead of bussing those nodes elsewhere.
Then everyone else in the county, ITB and OTB, can apply for the 60% of magnet spots.
Broughton
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 09:30 — Anonymous (not verified)You are EXACTLY correct! A magnet school should have a high F&R, Broughton does not!. I am sure they will not re-draw the base, but they should. Broughton is a magnet school of its own kind. Daniels should have retained their magnet status if Broughton did! The argument is the same and such a sham.
Broughton magnet status
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 20:02 — Anonymous (not verified)Of course, quite a few base students will have to be shipped out. How else could they retain their magnet status!!I am sure that no ITB students will be shipped out. Only the ones with their addresses outside of ITB. I am currently in Broughton's base outside of ITB, but we have already heard the "rumors" that we will be reassigned to Athens. It seems a lot of reassigning to keep magnet status. The point of magnet was to make a school healthy and draw students in. Broughton does not have that problem. How can you argue that Daniels not be a magnet if Broughton can still be one? They basically have the base population.
I want THEIR Lobbyists
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 19:50 — Lisa_BI'm happy for Broughton, since I have several friends attending Broughton and this was a concern to them.
BUT, why was "intense lobbying by Broughton parents" something that encouraged the School Board to listen? Didn't Lori Millberg say that they weren't going to listen to those who "yelled the loudest" or something like that? I think we need to get some of the Broughton lobbyists to help US out. I don't think it gets much more intense than the lobbying we've been doing for the past 2 years, but look where it's gotten us. Maybe it IS time to get LOUD???
Loud?
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 13:14 — g88ky07You know I can get loud.
Lordy I like LOUD!
I think we NEED loud!
Thu, 10/23/2008 - 08:38 — Lisa_BHey g88ky07:
We need some lessons in LOUD. I guess my parents didn't know best when they taught me to be calm, rational, honest, and respectful. Look how far that's gotten us in the last 3 years! (Apparently they left out the LOUD part, and that's what seems to be missing)
We've got LARGE covered. The masses are assembling, and we're ready to be heard.
Now we need LOUD on our side too. Any pointers?? :)
more press, bring the State
Thu, 10/23/2008 - 09:16 — AngelaWmore press, bring the State Ed into it, the more AWARENESS there is the better chance of being heard......the BoE is not "hearing" us because they don't have to, they have ALL the toys, so THEY win......keep exposing the weaknesses (and the list goes on) and sooner or later (probably later) something is bound to stick......people flare up over different things, then it dies down again.....class waivers comes to mind....there was an outcry, the State slapped WCPSS, but did Dr. Burns ever get his pay suspended until it all was fixed? Was there follow- through? I don't know.....the person I talked to at DPI simply said "they are in our sights"....
keep on keeping on, but turn up the Volume, keep meeting with people, turn up the awareness. It STILL shocks me how little people are aware of things until it "happens" to them........I know you've seen it and experienced that too......
Doesn't federal money go to this school?
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 17:51 — Voice_of_Reason_I wonder if they know how their money is being spent ;>
I don't think this is what magnet money was meant for.
knew it, knew it, knew it!!
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 15:04 — bigwinnieknew it, knew it, knew it!! There was NO WAY, they'd take on the ITB crowd over THIS....pavement yeah and even then that's stalled right.....never pi$$ off ITB money, just pick on the vocal families who want the SAME CALENDAR, sheesh.....
Lobbying and ITB
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 14:14 — ITB Rules (not verified)Lobbying and ITB money/status. We all know that lobbying alone does not matter to WCPSS. Special favors do, however. Ron cares about what the families want so he voted for the families as always.
what was rationale?
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 13:39 — EqualtreatmentOther than the lobbying, what was the rationale given for retaining Broughton's magnet status? Was it justified in terms of the district's magnet criteria?
What does this mean for the
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 13:22 — Anonymous (not verified)What does this mean for the base? Will there be students shipped out of there to let magnet students in?
It looks like some
Tue, 10/21/2008 - 14:43 — KeungHui (author)It looks like some reassignment of the base will be proposed.
