WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Bob Luebke questioning objectivity of Mayor Meeker's student assignment review group

Bookmark and Share

Bob Luebke is joining those who've criticized Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker's call for Wake County mayors to form a committee to review the developing student assignment plan.

In a blog post today, Luebke of the conservative Civitas Institute disputes Meeker's statement that the goal is to form an "objective group." Luebke questions how objective the group will be considering that Meeker and his wife, school board member Anne McLaurin, are both supporters of the old diversity policy.

Luebke targets Meeker's goal to have people with legal experience review whether the plan "complies with state statutory and constitutional standards."

"Someone needs to tell the Mayor the Wake County School Board retains legal counsel to ensure board policies are consistent with existing law," Luebke writes. "Isn’t it the responsibility of the school board, with input from the public, to assess the pros and cons of existing plans and to develop needed changes? Sounds like Meeker has problem with the democratic process."

If you don't like the school board policies

vote in another board.  What is a study group going to do here??

Yeah, I wonder how Meeker

Yeah, I wonder how Meeker would react if his buddies at the Chamber turned on him and brought in a fact-finding team to investigate why crime is so high downtown, why the city doesn't do a better job of diversifying residential development and why the convention center isn't fully booked.  Of course, this group would be "unbiased."

Seems like there are two Raleighs as far as Meeker is concerned -- one inside the beltline and one outside the beltline.  When the North Raleigh folks were getting abused by reassignment and MYR, Meeker was silent.  But now that his ITB friends are crowing, he suddenly has taken an interest in the school system.

Pot Calling...

the kettle black? Did Luebke question Margiotta's obvious conflict of interest in serving on the board of a group of private schools, while he serving on the BoE also? How about Civitas getting itself a contract from the BoE? When Pope was the person who dumped a whole lot of money in getting Margiotta and Tedesco elected? Was it for the contract?

Obviously there is no conflict of interest there, is there? Do he even know the meaning of the words he is using? Hypocrite.

Ultraliberal food fight

WOW, one ultraliberal picking a fight with another ultraliberal.  Who cares who wins, it is great policital theater.

?

Wow.

  • There is no contract between Civitas and the district
  • The total value of the compensation to Civitas was $75, IIRC.
  • The board members paid that out of their own pockets
  • Margiotta's last campaign was in 2007.  I do not recall any Pope pouring any money into his campaign
  • Civitas is a 501(c)(3) organization.  Its revenue does not line Pope's pockets.
  • Margiotta was a Trustee, not a Director
  • He was only a Trustee of Thales in Apex, not a 'group of public schools'
  • Thales never did any business with the district and, thus, there was no conflict of interest

I suppose being both Mayor

I suppose being both Mayor of Raleigh and a lawyer leaves one with a lot of extra time on one's hands ... time Meeker chooses to use to butt into the affairs of an elected body that was voted into office just like he was. Maybe he just thinks his wife, Ann McLaurin-Meeker, is just not up to the task and he felt the need to step and "help."
