WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

I realize it's a week away, but I'm interested in hearing from people who plan to speak at the Dec. 8 community engagement meeting at Broughton High School.

Please shoot me an e-mail message at keung.hui@newsobserver.com or call me at 829-4534 if you expect to be there next week.

I can tell you who will not

I can tell you who will not be attending. Allot of the F&R kids whose base presently is Moore Square. I spoke to some kids at least 10 and they didn’t even know about the reassignments.  The school system never sent anything home about it. I must admit if I didn’t live in Cary I wouldn’t know about the reassignments either. It’s the constant talk of it that led me to the WAKE ED blog.  Yes, it’s been in the news a little but if the school system plans to have such a huge reassignment they need to send some paper work home about it. WCPSS has no problem sending out the assignments when they are set in stone why do they not send info by mail or backpack during the time people can comment. If the reassignments are meant to help F&R shouldn’t they be told about it in a way that they will notice?  Some F&R do not have computers and Moore Square PTA tries to send home flyers in backpack and not just rely on emails. Huge parts of the base of Moore Square that can walk to the school are being reassigned but Mr Dulaney has not sent information to these parents about reassignments during the comment period.  WCPSS will send a letter when the kids are reassigned why not send one now so those parents can have a voice.
