WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Arnie Osborn not running for school board

Bookmark and Share

We can forget about Arnie Osborn running for the school board this fall.

Osborn filed today to run for a seat on the Garner Town Council.  In a press release on his web site, Osborn said he is backing John Tedesco for the District 2 school board seat.

Tedesco is running against incumbent Horace Tart, Cathy Truitt and Chris Augustine for the seat. We'll see if anyone else files before the noon deadline on Friday.

I know there are a lot of passionate parents on this website. As a member of the WSCA, I’m collecting parent testimonials about how current WCPSS policies and practices have PERSONALLY impacted you. Please send me your stories, both positive and not-so-positive – I’d like to hear them all. Please email them to me by Fri, July 24 at time4WCPSSchange@google.com.

Please include the following information when you write:

1) Your name, 2) District, or base school, 3) Your story – the good, the bad, and/or the ugly, 4) Your satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) with the current WCPSS, 5) What, if anything, you’d like to see change and why, and 6) Whether or not you’d be willing to be quoted in writing.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to share!

Why Arnie knew John Tedesco was the right man for the job

Growing up Mr. Tedesco was an F&R kid, and has been through several of our schools. His work with thousands of kids at Big Brothers Big Sisters actually has him several of those schools for their School Based Menotring projects, including Washington Street Elementary. He also raises his siblings since the death of his mother, and has worked with them through Garner Middle and High Schools.

He has made some bold statements on the issues, and the link below directly quotes some of them.

As we have been getting to know him more recently, we can't wait to have him fighting for our family. It's about time that school board got a fresh face who is an unbending advocate for families.

I like what I read here.  I

I like what I read here.

I am kind of startled or stunned when people ask me how it could be that our schools are creating success and failure by what they offer different kids. They act like they thought our schools were equitable. We integrated the schools in my life time. North Carolina laws changed during integration so that school districts could do things to drive out the Black kids (e.g., attendance policies, suspensions, etc.). Black kids were labeled as special ed at huge rates, while White kids were labeled gifted so that instruction could be "differentiated." These are all things that happened.

But yet people think education is just fine now and we have equity and a system of meritocracy.

From what I read here, Mr. Tedescro looks like he might understand that.

What I say doesn't feel like a downer to me. I think we could have successful kids as soon as we realize it isn't the kids. It is the system.

Has Mr. Tedesco filed?

If he's going to run, has he walked through some of the FYR schools in D2 and seen the empty class rooms? How does Mr. Tedesco feel about reversing course on FYR? Is it something we'll need to study or is he for reversing a mass of the latest forced conversions to save money, use those savings to educate and employee our teachers??

Arnie, Arnie, Arnie.

Yes, he has filed

I think more than a week ago and he's been endorsed by Arnie.

Here's the link to his website page that includes a point on MYR.

Unless I missed it

his filing was posted here as news, like everyone else, or that no one has, so thanks for the update.

I saw his comment on FYR, but he doesn't say HOW he'd fix it or anything about reversals to fix the problem.

Tedesco filed on the first

Tedesco filed on the first day. This was the post that ran then.

O.

I missed my vitamin that day, sorry.

Cheers to Mr.

Cheers to Mr. Osborn.

Having too many candidates in the field plays to the advantage of the incumbent.

Sometimes the best decision is to put your personal ambitions aside, and look to what would be in the best interest of those you would serve.
