WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Another District 1 board hopeful

Bookmark and Share

We've got another player in the race for the school board.

Rita Rakestraw said she filed paperwork today to form a campaign committee for the District 1 board seat being vacated by Lori MIllberg. Rakestraw is making the rounds at today's school board committee of the whole meeting.

Some of you folks may know Rakestraw as chairwoman of Citizens Against Residential Encroachment (CARE), a community group that sued Knightdale after it rezoned land to allow Wal-Mart to build in town.

But Rakestraw said Knightdale Mayor Russell Killen encouraged her to run for school board.

If elected, Rakestraw would be a rarity in serving while raising young children. She's got a 2-year-old and 4-year-old. She said she intends to send them both to schools in Knightdale.

Rakestraw was a teacher for nine years.

Millberg invited Rakestraw to attend today's committee of the whole meeting to see firsthand what it's like to serve on the board.

Otis Tyrone Lindsey has also filed a candidate committee for District 1, which covers Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon.

The official candidate filing period begins July 3.
