WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Advising on student assignment

Bookmark and Share

With the draft reassignment plan less than a week away, there's interest in who's helping to put it all together.

That includes the members of the student assignment advisory committee. The members are Diana Bader, Alison Donnelly, Anne Sherron, David Williams, George Wait, Julie Stevens, Larry Dickens, Liz Parry and Roxie Cash.

Those names should be familiar to those who've been around here for a few years. Here's info on some of the members.

Bader, a former president of the Wake County PTA Council, is the de-facto head of the committee. She's been active in western Wake schools for many years.

Cash was a school board member for the North Raleigh seat now held by Kevin Hill from 1991 to 1999. She's been heavily involved in the PTSA at Millbrook High School.

Dickens is the head of the political arm of the Raleigh-Wake Citizens Association. The RWCA has been a long-time backer of the district's diversity efforts.

Parry has been an outspoken advocate of Wake's magnet program and diversity policy for many years. She is the director of N.C. State's RAMP-UP program, which tries to get K-12 students from under-represented groups to take advanced math courses.

Sherron, like many of the advisory committee members, has an extensive history of volunteering in the school system. She has been the District 6 Board Advisory Council chairwoman and a PTSA president of Sanderosn High.

Stevens is another long-time school volunteer who was president-elect of the Wake PTA Council. She was a former PTA president of Morrisville Elementary School

Wait used to be the long-time chairman of the District 8 Board Advisory Committee until Ron Margiotta deposed him. Wait had taken the unusual position of publcly attacking Margiotta at a meeting.

Wait was former school board member Bill Fletcher's campaign treasurer in 2005. After Fletcher lost, Wait crossed party lines to back Eleanor Goettee in the runoff.

Williams is a representative of Advocates for Greater Garner, a group of business and community leaders who complain that Wake's student assignment policies have left Garner's schools with an overly high percentage of low-income students.

George Wait - Great Help

I know George met with groups from Preston and McAuthor Park, as well as our Apex nodes, and was a great help. He provided keen insights into the reassignment process, and helped us develop alternate strategies, that ultimately proved successful. (I think he also successfully helped the Panther Creek folks that were slated to go to Athens, but wanted to go to Cary.) When George spoke to our group, he also mentioned that he was a 4 time PTA President (Not sure of which schools, but I think Davis Drive Middle was one of them.), and the current President of the Carh High Booster Club. We appreciate what he did for us.

Donnelly lives in North

Donnelly lives in North Raleigh. Very nice person.

Ok Liz lives in Western

Ok Liz lives in Western Wake. So if shechoosestolivein this area then why does she believe that everyone is a racist if they do not believe in buissing kids around to up scores. how did she get her kids into Washington. Talk about a school with no Diversity. Checkout its stats on WCPSS it makes Davis Drive look like the UN

UN

how ironic that Davis Drive and UN comment.... Facts are: that Elementary school does have 22 nationalities represented there ...and is 46% assorted minorities.  Wow, isn't that one way to define diversity?

Yes - but it's not the

Yes - but it's not the flavor of diversity that WCPSS wants so therefore, it is irrelevant in their view of the world......

Keung, Do any of these

Keung,
Do any of these parents live ITB or do they all live in North Raleigh , Western Wake/ Cary, and Garner area?

I'm not sure about Donnelly

I'm not sure about Donnelly as I haven't actually talked with her before. As for the rest, three are from Cary, two are from North Raleigh, one is from Southeast Raleigh, one is from Garner and one is from Holly Springs.

From what I get, and a very

From what I get, and a very reliable source...Parry had her children attend the "highly recommended" Washington Gt magnet elem. What does she know about "diversity" and it affects everyonelse in the county. I'm sure she also lives in High dollar Cary...someone like that sure can't preach to the rest of us in the county.

Parry lives in Holly

Parry lives in Holly Springs. She used to live in Cary.

Scathing Alert!

Hey if "good ole Liz" needs some scathing, tell her to see me, I can scathe her up and down one side and sit my drink on her other side while she bleeds from both ears at the scathing I can hand out by not agreeing with her precious wcpss and their BSCF mentality!

Call me Liz, we'll do lunch and I'll remind you how your "beloved" wcpss is a bunch of vermin coated liars!

HA!

This is your poster child for your 'views'.  And you expect to be listened too...

Another "respectful" post

Another "respectful" post and the folks upset with personal attacks against their Leesville own continue to  remain quiet...

Here's the deal folks. For

Here's the deal folks.
For whatever its worth, whether it was riding the Obama wave or not, the voters of NC and Wake Co. have elected not "change" but the status quo in this state. This is just one example of many to come.

it is one thing entirely to

it is one thing entirely to disagree on WCPSS policies or what have you, it is totally different to write scathing assaults on others' opinions. If you were there as you said, then you know the differentiation I am making.

yeah anyone who has ever

yeah anyone who has ever visited Support Wake Schools blog (or whatever it is, listserve maybe?) has gone up against good ole Liz and her scathing remarks against anyone who doesn't agree with WCPSS.

Oh yes and if you disagree

Oh yes and if you disagree with Good Ole Liz you must be a racist because why else would you not want diversity at any cost.

exactly so!

exactly so!

Go read...

Those 'scathings' go both ways.  I signed up for that group (which now appears to be defunct) just to listen in and the beating Ms. Parry took  was amazing.  Personal and nasty attacks for her views.  I didn't dare post on that site or use my real name.

Whether you agree with her not she has supported Wake Schools far longer then most here and before she was 'personally affected'.

Why is that worth highlighting?

Whether you agree with her not she has supported Wake Schools far
longer then most here and before she was 'personally affected'.

I don't know Ms. Parry or I don't believe I've read anything by her; my questions are more generic. Why is length of involvement significant? People with agendas may glom, that doesn't mean that what they bring to the table matches a reasonable priority. What does "support WCPSS" mean? A blank check?

Chuck's pals

I've witnessed Bader verbally attack Mr. Margiotta as well. Not publicly...but in front of a large group of parents meeting to discuss student assignment.

As for Liz Parry, this is what she had to say about those of us not satisfied with WCPSS's diversity policy:

"DIVERSITY IS ABOUT CULTURE, RACE AND INCOME BUT LET'S BE REAL: IN OUR COMMUNITY IT IS ABOUT BLACKS, WHITES, HISPANICS AND LOW VS. HIGH INCOME. STOP HIDING BEHIND THE CHINESE OR INDIAN FAMILY ON YOUR STREET."

(Caps are hers;not mine)

Give as good as you get

You have to respect who pulls one quote out of months of conversation ands labels someone.  You people are despicable.  Does disparaging other people make you feel better?

No labels

I didn't label. I just shined a little light onto what Ms. Parry believes as it relates to her role on the Student Assignment Advisory Committee. I don't see anything disparaging about that.

How are they selected? How

How are they selected? How long do they serve on the committee?

It's a staff advisory

It's a staff advisory committee, not a school board one. This means you'd need to contact Growth Management to get on the committee. It's not like the board advisory councils that are filled by the board.

I'm not sure if the student assignment committee members have a fixed term as several have been on for a long time. For instance, Wait was a member as early as 2001 when he was appointed to the district's Healthy Schools Task Force.

Just curious

How are the members for such a committee selected? Is there a way for ordinary folks to apply, or do you have to know someone?

See above note. Contact

See above note. Contact growth management.

Howling at the Moon........

Except for maybe one member, the rest are full blown members of the BoE(eR) "kool-aid" drinkers society complete with aluminum hats. They pretty much rubber stamp anything that Chucky and his minions put out.
