WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

If you bookmarked the old site, you're going to have change it. The url for the new site is slightly different. It's now blogs.newsobserver.com/wakeed/home

Thanks for viewing.

 UPDATE

Congrats on finding the new site. It doesn't look like everyone has realized the url has changed. Until we figure out how to do a better job of conveying the info, you might want to let others know about the new url.

Update on questions

I've been told the RSS feed title has been updated to be more specific.

I've been told that fonts for the RSS feeds are up to your individual feed aggregators.

I've been reassured that everyone should be able to view the old comments from the archive link. I haven't heard about problems there from anyone other than Voice of Reason.

Font size

I've been told that fonts for the RSS feeds are up to your individual feed aggregators.

You are the hardest working man journalism -- thanks for getting back on these.

As for font size, I'm talking the fonts in the submission form on this very page I'm typing. Of course I can set the fonts in the RSS reader. That's not what I'm talking about. I'd have to write a greasemonkey script to modify the font size on this very reply page. That's overkill in my estimation when your web guy/gal can update the form CSS font size spec to something other than 8px or whatever.

I'm guessing I'm not alone on the small font size.

Thanks!

Font sizes

I've now been told the font sizes for the comments have been increased.

Lets see...

Oh, big cushy fonts! Thanks!

Difference between full on-line story blog and this one

  • Mr. Hui
  • When you comment on the full on-line story it does not go to the WakeEd blog and vice-versa. The full on-line blog has a voting button also. Is this the way you want it? This is very different from before. We have two different blogs in essence for the same thing. RSS feed is different also.

Double commenting

VOR,

I hate to give you such a lame answer, but that's just the way it is now. There aren't any plans that I am aware of to change the situation.

Blog issues

Folks,
As you can tell, we're still working through some issues with the new blog software. Please pass along any problems you're having with the software either here or directly to me at keung.hui@newsobserver.com.

Font Size

Hold the Control key and scroll up or down with your mouse. You will be able to adjust the font/type size on your screen.

Hints to Cope

1. If you want your old screen name, you need to re-register; use the underscore character instead of spaces.

2. The new RSS feed for comments is: http://blogs.newsobserver.com/crss/term/12
RSS readers make this blog easier to read.

3. You can now edit your posts and links are now hot (click-n-go).

Mr. Hui
What happened to our old comments? I saw all the old posts, but the comments weren't there.

Pictures but no preview

Confused

Interesting Feature. Why don't we get the editor in original posts?

Old comments

VOR,

When I view the archives, I can still see the old comments. I'm wondering if anyone else here can't view the comments in the archives.

I tried again Mr. Hui - no luck

I looked at Monday's articles, there were no comments.

Comments

VOR,

I've passed along your issue with the comments.

RSS feeds

Have RSS feeds for the blogs gone away? Never mind I found it. You guys do like itty-bitty tweensie-weenie fonts, though... We can post-submit edit our posts, very nice. Mr. Hui, the title of the WakeEd Blog's RSS feed is a generic "RSS feed for individual blog" FYI.

RSS

Dadof3,

Can you provide more specifics about your RSS concerns?

RSS concern fixed

Mr. Hui,

The title of the RSS feed is accurately descriptive now.  So the issue appears to be fixed. Yes I know I can increase the font-size via a number of tricks, but setting the visual default larger would be nice.

Now then, can we fix the itsy-bitsy default font size? My 4x reading glasses are at the repair shop. (Seriously, the font size in my browser is about 8pt. Yikies! Us parents feel old enough, thank you very much... ;)

RSS feeds

Dadof3,

Thanks for mentioning it. I'll pass it along to the folks who are overseeing the blog conversions.

"The new site"

This site is "New", but does not seem to be "Improved" at this point.  Is this the result of the McClatchy budget cuts?
