CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina suffered a 33-30 defeat against Duke on Saturday. The next day, on Sunday, the Tar Heels showed up to the Kenan Football Center and discovered a whole lot of red in their locker room.
It was the start of N.C. State week, after all. UNC will host the Wolfpack on Saturday at 12:30 at Kenan Stadium. N.C. State has defeated the Tar Heels in each of the past five years and if the Heels needed a reminder of the significance of this game, they had to look no further than their locker room.
At first, Jonathan Cooper, the Heels’ senior offensive guard, thought the locker room had been vandalized. Then it became clear that all the red wasn’t a sign of vandalism at all. The locker room looked exactly the way coach Larry Fedora and his staff wanted it to look.
“There was a ton of flyers, N.C. State stuff,” UNC quarterback Bryn Renner said. “The whole locker room was red. It was almost like he went to Party City, and put up all the flyers and the big hoopla. Definitely walking in, [you felt] the magnitude of this game … We need to have a good week of practice and just come ready to play. So I think that’s what his message was.”
Fedora, meanwhile, tried to downplay the significance of all the red.
“We have stuff in the locker room each week on teams,” he said. “It’s just, again, we do things to motivate our players. I’m sure just like everybody else does. I don’t know if that’s a big deal or not.”
