UNC, the top seed in the Midwest, advanced to play No. 9 Creighton on Sunday.
Despite the wide final margin, the Tar Heels struggled to assert themselves for the first 25 minutes against the 16th-seeded Catamounts. Vermont never led, and trailed 37-25 at halftime, but the Catamounts hung around long enough to frustrate UNC coach Roy Williams.
UNC led by just 10 with about 14 minutes to play, but the Heels went on a 17-7 run over the next six minutes to build their first 20-point lead of the game. Tyler Zeller and James Michael McAdoo, who started in place of the injured John Henson, led UNC with 17 points apiece.
Sandro Carrisimo led Vermont with 11 points. The Catamounts shot 39.7 percent but UNC wasn’t much more effective from the field, shooting 41.5 percent.
