Update: Further explanation on the nature of the scouting report.
CHAPEL HILL — True story: A team that played at North Carolina in December left a copy of its scouting report on a copier in the Smith Center. And that scouting report, which includes a few lines about each of the Tar Heels’ top eight players, made its way to me.
I thought it’d be interesting to share it because it provides some insight into how an opposing team prepared to play UNC.
This scouting report is typical of the kind that coaches will provide to players before a game. It’s likely that this team prepared a more detailed scouting report for UNC, and that this served as a pre-game primer.
We have withheld the identity of the opposing team to protect any scouting tendencies contained in the report that, if they were to become public, might put it at a competitive disadvantage in future games. The Tar Heels, of course, played six games at home in December.
So here’s how this particular team broke down each of UNC’s top eight players (punctuation, sentence structure, etc., are exactly as it reads in the scouting report):
STARTERS
Kendall Marshall:
“Very crafty. Pushes the ball with the pass. Doesn’t like pressure. Must have active hands to affect vision.”
Dexter Strickland:
“Very aggressive in transition. Driver!! Their best defender – Always running through passing lanes.”
Harrison Barnes:
“Very efficient on offense. Good 3pt shooter. On dribble pull up. Make him uncomfortable.”
John Henson:
“Long and very active. Wants to spin off of you in post. Hates it physical. Hates pressure on perimeter. Physical block outs.”
Tyler Zeller:
“Runs pipe hard. Jump hook over left and right shoulder. Play the ball early. Hates it physical.”
RESERVES
Reggie Bullock:
“Shooter. Offensive rebounder. Looks for 3’s in transition.”
James Michael McAdoo:
“High energy offensive rebounder. Runs floor hard.”
P.J. Hairston:
“Shooter. Looking to shoot at all times. Doesn’t guard.”
In addition to the player breakdowns, the scouting report included a “team summary” about UNC. That read like this:
Offense:
-Transition team looking to ball ahead and run the pipe
-Secondary – Carolina Break & 5 up
-Half court – Push for Barnes/Shuffle for Bigs
Defense:
-Deny wings
-Run and jump after TO’s
-Hard help on ball screens
-Marshall and Barnes don’t want to guard
The offensive keys for this particular team:
-Run it right back at them
-Earn space/get open/be strong
-Execute/screen/drive
And the defensive keys for this particular team:
-Transition D
-Defensive rebounding/Physical box outs
-Getting after Marshall
So there you have it: an opposing team’s scouting report on UNC.
Some quick thoughts:
-Notice that the same sentence was used to describe both Henson and Zeller: “Hates it physical.” That’s the rap on both those guys, though when I asked Henson earlier this week whether he hated it physical he just smiled. He said he understood that’s the scouting report for both him and Zeller, and that teams will try to play them rough.
-This particular team certainly didn’t give much respect for Hairston’s defense. “Doesn’t guard.” Hairston’s offense is further along than his defense – don’t think anyone would dispute that – but it will be interesting to see how Hairston develops as a defensive player. Certainly that’s a point of emphasis for him.
-This particular team acknowledges Marshall’s excellent court vision and wants its players to have active hands to disrupt that vision. Easier said than done.
-Strickland is sometimes the forgotten man among UNC’s starting five but it’s clear he received a lot of respect in this scouting report. This particular team was afraid and cautious about his ability to drive, and warned its players about his defense.

Way too soft
Sun, 01/08/2012 - 10:32 — JustObservingScouting report sounds pretty accurate to me - especially the "doesn't like it physical" part. If the Heels want to contend for the ACC or NC title, they need to get tougher underneath. We need another Hansborough type. Z and Henson are too soft and make way too many poor decisions in the course of a game.
Well...
Sat, 01/07/2012 - 08:33 — UNC1998It may be a true scouting report from a defeated foe, but I'm pretty sure if needed by UNC that scouting report will be used to inspire improvement in players.
"They calling you soft, John!" Can't you just hear it?
There are a lot of folks who
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 20:37 — Andrew_Carter (author)There are a lot of folks who come through the Dome who aren't affiliated with the basketball team. The opposing team didn't give it to me. I can confirm that.

It starts with you
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 20:21 — gvillegatrYou said this cheat sheet was found on a copier in the Dean Dome, yet no one from the UNC baskets family gave it to you and we don't have to have confirmation to know the opposing team didn't give it to you. Did you wander in to the copy room after the post game and take it ? That's the only rational answer left.
Chuckle chuckle
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 17:33 — towermanYeah yeah 'GoHeels1984' and the hardest part about getting into UNC is telling your parents that you're gay.............
Typical....
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 17:37 — GoHeels1984Typical response from a State College fan. I wouldn't have expected anything less....
Same thing happened at State College
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 17:10 — GoHeels1984A friend of mine who works at State College told me that the same thing happened over there recently. They covered it up quickly for embarrassment of it leaking to the media however.
They said that the scouting report said the following:
"Don't worry about the coaches, they only last there 3 or 4 years before they are run out of town after another average at best season"
"If you lose to the 1 potential NBA player on the wusspack, don't worry about it next year because he won't be there. They usually USE State college for one year and then leave. They even tell the coaches this when they are recruited that they will only be there one year. Oh, then don't worry about them when you play them in the NBA because they will stink then."
"if you want to get a State college player off their game, just mention UNC. They are used to losing to them every year in basketball and this makes them so upset that they will just curl up in a ball on the floor and say uncle"
"Don't say, "nice cow pasture" around the basketball arena though because the State college player will say "thanks""
larceny
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 16:26 — westbendN&O must not do background checks . First this guy Andrew admits to Breaking and Entering in his intro to readers and now he admits to stealing from the Smith Center copy room ..... oh nevermind he is a journalists and they are taught dishonesty in J school
Hey -- someone read my intro
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 16:37 — Andrew_Carter (author)Hey -- someone read my intro post! Thanks for reading.
The cat's already out of the bag
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 16:22 — gdiversYou reprinted the scouting report verbatim! Do you honestly believe nobody will recognize it? Do you honestly believe the coach won't remember who he asked to make copies of it? Don't say you want to protect some poor team manager by not revealing more details, you've toasted this person.
No doubt the team and its
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 16:26 — Andrew_Carter (author)No doubt the team and its coaches would recognize it. But right now, publicly, it's an anonymous team. Less embarrassing and/or damaging for the team that way.
I hope it was Texas
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 16:33 — gdiversGo to h3ll Rick Barnes!
I think it's interesting....

Fri, 01/06/2012 - 13:48 — whitlow71so how did you get it? I'm guessing someone at UNC released it, what is the motivation behid that?
Want to make clear that this
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 15:25 — Andrew_Carter (author)Want to make clear that this definitely did not come to me by way of anyone affiliated with the UNC basketball program in any way.
News flash
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 13:27 — gvillegatrNothing new here. Maybe I ought to start applying for head coaching jobs in college baskets.
At minimum I could increase my yearly income by slightly more than two and keep the wife at home with the kids full time which she would absolutely love. The kicker is staying there ! :)
Side note: pretty shameless to not give the schools name who was dumb enough to leave the scouting report behind ... According to Obama and his cronies, unemployment is down and 200,000 extra jobs were created so this "idiot" should have no problem finding another job (yea, right). #IWantToBeReelected
So what was the outcome?
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 13:17 — WheelmanSo who won the game (I think we know this) and how accurate was the scouting report to the actual play of the game?
Well, it's obvious who won
Fri, 01/06/2012 - 13:24 — Andrew_Carter (author)Well, it's obvious who won given that UNC just set a record for having the longest winning streak in Smith Center history. Won't provide other details that might give anything away. Sorry. Wouldn't want some poor team manager to lose his job over leaving a piece of paper on a copier.
