Ranking UNC’s ACC schedule by order of difficulty

Bookmark and Share

After a disappointing – more on this in a second – non-conference portion of the season, the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball season begins this week. North Carolina, of course, hosts Boston College on Saturday.

So now’s as good a time as any to look ahead at the Tar Heels’ conference schedule which, really, doesn’t look all that formidable. And that’s the case for two reasons: One, UNC is very good. And, two, the ACC, as a whole, appears to be significantly down compared its normal standard.

Two ACC teams – Duke (No. 2) and UNC (No. 13) – rank among the top 15 teams in the RPI, according to realtimerpi.com. The rest of the league?

You’ve got Virginia Tech at No. 37. N.C. State at No. 43. Virginia at No. 56. Florida State (No. 72) and Miami (No. 78) are the only other conference teams in the top 100. Five ACC teams – nearly half the conference – rank 105th or worse in the RPI.

And some teams appear to be truly abysmal. Boston College, which ranks 262nd in the RPI, has losses against the likes of Boston University, Holy Cross and Rhode Island. Those three teams, by the way, are not good. Clemson, meanwhile, lost to Coastal Carolina at home. And that’s not even the Tigers’ worst loss, according to the RPI. Georgia Tech lost at Tulane. And against Mercer. And at Fordham.

Not good. Not good. Not good.

Florida State, meanwhile, has to be thankful it’s not in the Ivy League. The Seminoles, who were supposed to be one of the stronger teams in the ACC, would already be trying to climb out of an 0-2 hole in the Ivy League after losses against Harvard and Princeton.

So the bottom half of the ACC – and even some of the top half – appears to be in complete disarray entering the start of league play. Most teams usually improve as the season progresses, so it figures that Boston College, Clemson and Georgia Tech won’t be as bad in February as they appear to be now. Still, though, when the floor already so far underground, how high can the ceiling really go?

Once conference play begins, more defined tiers will emerge within the ACC. Here’s how those tiers would look now, entering league play:

TOP:
UNC
Duke

NEXT:
N.C. State
Virginia Tech
Virginia

NEXT:
Florida State
Miami
Maryland

BOTTOM:
Wake Forest
Georgia Tech
Clemson
Boston College

How crazy is it that here on Jan. 4, UNC and Duke appear to be the ACC’s only sure-things to make the NCAA Tournament? Of course, at least a couple more conference teams will make it. Who they’ll be, though, is anybody’s guess.

So back the original point of this post, which was to rank the Tar Heels’ conference games in order of difficulty. First, UNC’s league schedule:

Boston College
Miami
At Florida State
At Virginia Tech

N.C. State
Georgia Tech
At Wake Forest
At Maryland

Duke
Virginia
At Miami
Clemson

At N.C. State
At Virginia
Maryland
At Duke

Now, in order of difficulty, from easiest to most difficult. We’ll break these up into tiers:

TIER 1
Boston College
Clemson
Georgia Tech
At Wake Forest

TIER 2
Miami
At Miami
Virginia
Maryland

TIER 3
N.C. State
At Virginia
At Maryland
At Virginia Tech

TIER 4
At Florida State
At N.C. State
Duke
At Duke

Some thoughts:

-UNC shouldn’t lose any of the four games in tier 1. Those are all basically gimmies. If any of those are even close games, it’d be surprising.

-UNC shouldn’t lose any of the four games in tier 2, either, though the level of competition increases over tier 1. Virginia has potential (we don't know how much because the Cavaliers haven't really played anybody), and the game in Charlottesville could be difficult. But UNC should win with ease at home. Right now, Miami is not good.

-Tier 3 is where it starts to get interesting. N.C. State has talent and, it seems, coaching. At least one of those things has been missing in that program for a while now. UNC could win that game by 20 at the Smith Center, and probably should win that game comfortably. But you never know. The other three games in tier 3, all on the road, are loseable. They’d be big upsets, but all three of those places can be difficult places to play.

-Tier 4 include what I think are UNC’s four most difficult conference games. Florida State is not playing well right now, but I covered the Seminoles for four years and I’ve seen strange, weird things happen in that building in Tallahassee. I thought FSU had no shot – none – to beat Duke down there last year. I was wrong. Florida State is a difficult place to play for about two games per season: When Duke and UNC come to town. The other three games in tier 4 are all rivalry games, two of them on the road, two of them against Duke.

Yes, I wrote they "could"

Yes, I wrote they "could" lose three games. Not that they would or even that it's likely. Those road games are all "loseable." Did you miss the very next sentence, where I write that if UNC indeed lost any one of those games - let alone all three - it'd be a big upset?

In your first post you also said I wrote that UNC could lose three of four out of the third-toughest schedule grouping. That grouping is actually what I consider the second-toughest. (This is why I thought you were confused about how I grouped the teams together.) I wrote that UNC should win its eight easiest games with little difficulty.

Then why not just say ...

They "could" lose all the games ?

The bottom line is UNC won't lose a single game to anyone not named DUIke. And it's doubtful they will lose to them this year.

You know it and I know it, but you don't want to sound like some homer. So I just said it for ya. Cheers.

Whoa Nellie!

Yes, UNC is the class of the ACC this year. This morning on ESPNU, Jay Bilas and his two cohorts unanimously picked the Tar Heels as the national champion. I don't disagree.

However, as I sit here watching Wake give Va Tech all it can handle, I can see at least 3 losses just based on the fact that road games can be tough and the Tar Heels can be soft at times. They don't seem to have the intense player (like Hansbrough) who can will them through the tough spots that are inevitable. That will cost them here and there as the season rolls on.

The national title

While I will not go as far to crown them National Champions, it is the goal no question and very attainable.

But you've convinced me since last week that this conference is garbage sans UNC. I didn't go crazy predicting what the football team could attain over the last couple of years, but I will predict no worse than 15-1 in the ACC for the bball team. I truly think that is worse case scenario.

I hope you are enjoying the beat down the Bungles are taking this evening. I know your a Browns fan.

Bengals

Yes, I am.

And, believe it or not, I am happy to see TJ Yates leading the Texans in the playoffs. He was a terrific leader his last year at UNC, and is making the most of his opportunity in Houston. Good for him.

Let's see

UNC is a tier 1 team, but can easily lose three of four in what you consider UNC's third toughest tier. That doesn't make any sense considering UNC is no where close to being down this season when all of the other 11 teams.

I'd also switch out at UVa and at ncsu. After all, as you stated, we're talking about the "Now."

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Sorry if that wasn't clear. We're talking two different tiers. The first one was a grouping of the teams in the conference. The second is a grouping of the teams on UNC's schedule.

I probably should have used a different word instead of "tier" when talking about the schedule. Regardless, the fourth group listed obviously contains the most difficult games. The first group obviously contains the weakest teams.

Sorry for the confusion.

Huh

There was no confusion on my part.

In the weakest to strongest segment, you claim UNC could lose three of four games in tier 3.. Did you not ? That's absurd.

rpi not a good measure of team strength

Any system that ranks a Duke team that lost by twenty to Ohio State and to an unranked team last night as the second best team in the country is obviously flawed.  A much better indicator is Sagarin "Predictor" which currently ranks UNC at 5, Duke at 10 and UVA at 35.

Completely agree there are

Completely agree there are better measurements out there than the RPI. Still, the RPI factors heavily come March. And as flawed as it is, it measures the now. I'm a big fan of the predictor, too, but this post was more about where things stand now as opposed to where they might stand.

Doesn't the committee recognize this

Doesn't t the selection committee recognize that RPI is not a good indicator?  Do they use it because it is more "pc", as Sagarin suggests?

Good question, Doug. My

Good question, Doug. My guess is they use it partly because they always have -- or have for a long time. Change doesn't come easily. What I find interesting about the Sagarin ranking is how high Virginia is. I think the Cavs can be very good but it's tough to know just how good because of their schedule. Could easily see them emerging as the No. 3 team in the league, though.

Why is a story about UNC's

Why is a story about UNC's ranking on the Wolfpack page?

Just went to State Now and

Just went to State Now and didn't see this there. Not sure what you're seeing.

I must admit..

I've not paid much attention to UNC's basketball season up to now. Before the practices even started I said anything less than a National Championship would be less than the team capable of. I'll stand by that, but will add the team needs to continue to round out it's game, especially on defense. That Wisconsin game was very impressive (it's the only game I've watched this season). There have been a few others where the defense wasn't described with glowing colors. I know RW preaches defense, so I can only hope the team will continue to grow in that direction.

Nice break down AC.

Very informative, I work a lot and havent really been keeping up with all the other ACC teams.Didn't know the ACC looked this weak this year.Syracuse shood give us a nice boost when they join. You'll have to excuse some people on here Andrew.Any article about UNC is bound to step on someones toes.People know they can't argue about UNC when it comes to basketball.so they will nit pick at anything...

You'll have to excuse some UNc fans...

Yes, bc no one, especially state or duke fans, have ever gotten bent out of shape or challenged a writer/blogger on anything they didn't agree with.

What a tired act.

Thanks for stopping by,

Thanks for stopping by, Bryant. Appreciate the kind words. Hope you make UNC Now a part of your routine.

how about a little proof

how about a little proof reading?  did you really use the word "It'd"?  other than your lack of writing skills, the article is pretty accurate.  there isnt a lot seperating the acc teams below unc and duke.  nice job captain obvious!

Another goof

.......UNC is not ranked 13 either, although it doesn't make a bit of difference right now....

They were in the

They were in the realtimerpi.com RPI at the time of this post. Thanks for reading.

It'd be valuable for you to

It'd be valuable for you to know that "it'd," in fact, does exist: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/it'd

I'm not sure about your point

"It'd" does exist as a word.  I've not seen that word used in years.  However, Mr. Carter did use the word correctly.

never said it doesnt exist,

never said it doesnt exist, apparently you read as well as you write.  how about the other errors in your article?  do you have another weak comeback for those too?

Wow. Welcome to the blog,

Wow. Welcome to the blog, indeed. Thanks for reading.

Seriously, if you have issues with anything just leave them here or email me. Email address is on the side. We're all friends here. No need for nastiness, my man.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Thanks for the well wishes. Happy new year to you,  too. Apologize for the lack of polishing. I write a couple thousand words a day and they're  not all going to shine, unfortunately. Appreciate you stopping by.
