UNC target Theo Pinson to announce college choice on Wednesday

Theo Pinson, a 6-foot-7 small forward at Wesleyan Christian Academy in Greensboro, is considered one of the top prospects in the class of 2014. And soon he’ll announce where he will play in college.

Pinson is considering North Carolina, Duke, Georgetown, Indiana and Lousiville. He will announce his decision, as ESPN.com’s Dave Telep reported recently, on Wednesday at 12:15.

UNC baseball enters postseason without a losing streak

CHAPEL HILL — In a lot of ways, North Carolina’s game against Florida State on Monday night wasn’t all that important. The game didn’t count in the ACC standings. And even if it had, the Tar Heels had already secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC tournament.

Yet in some ways, the game against the Seminoles meant a lot. Most important of all, perhaps: It allowed UNC a chance to respond after its defeat against Virginia Tech on Saturday. Entering the regular-season finale against the Seminoles, the Tar Heels hadn’t lost consecutive games all season.

Summer Hoops Preview '14: Hairston, Heels primed for success

Coach: Roy Williams (11th season, 282-79 at UNC; 700-180 overall)

2012-13 record: 25-11 (12-6 ACC, third)

Postseason: NCAA tournament, 1-1 (beat Villanova, lost to Kansas)

Projected starting lineup: PG Marcus Paige, G P.J. Hairston, G Leslie McDonald, F James Michael McAdoo, F Isaiah Hicks

Plus

• P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo both decided to return for the 2013-14 season. By the end of the 2012-13 season, Hairston developed into the best player on the team, averaging 18.2 points over the final 13 games.

To give you an idea of the strides Hairston, a scoring guard, made from his freshman to sophomore seasons, he made 13 3-pointers (in 27 attempts) in three ACC tournament games in 2013. As a freshman, Hairston made eight 3-pointers during the *entire* conference season.

Summer Hoops Preview '14: History points to Duke in new ACC

Summer Hoops Preview '14
Today: The Picks; Duke, UNC, N.C. State
Monday: Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Boston College, Florida State
Tuesday: Clemson, Maryland, Miami, Pittsburgh
Wednesday: Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech

If Duke's history is the precedent, the rest of the newly expanded ACC is in trouble.

The Blue Devils have a chance to be historically good in 2013-14. Mike Krzyzewski has taken Duke to the NCAA tournament 29 times in his 33 seasons. He has lost in the round of eight only twice: last season to Louisville (the eventual champion) and in 1998 to Kentucky (the eventual champion).

UNC QB Marquise Williams back in school

North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams is back in school -- but can he reclaim his job as backup to Bryn Renner? ROBERT WILLETT

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams is back in school after not being enrolled during the spring semester, team spokesman Kevin Best said on Friday.

Andrew Wiggins chooses Kansas over UNC, others

Andrew Wiggins, regarded as the top college basketball prospect in years, announced today that he will play next season at Kansas. Wiggins’ other three finalists were North Carolina, Florida State and Kentucky.

Wiggins, the 6-foot-7 forward from Huntington (W.Va.) Prep, provided no indication of which school he was favoring, and so his signing with Kansas was met with surprise. Florida State, which is where his parents met and where his father played basketball, had been considered the favorite.

Mitchell Wiggins, father of Andrew, once dreamed of playing for Dean Smith

CHAPEL HILL — Who knows what kind of effect, if any, it has had on his son’s recruitment. But Mitchell Wiggins, the father of Andrew Wiggins, grew up outside of Kinston dreaming of playing for Dean Smith. Apparently, though, Smith didn’t show the elder Wiggins much interest.

North Carolina is certainly interested in Andrew Wiggins, who will announce his college decision on Tuesday. About 30 years ago, Wiggins’ father would have loved to be in the position his son is now – with a chance to play for the Tar Heels.

Andrew Wiggins recruitment: A q-and-a with Dave Telep

CHAPEL HILLAndrew Wiggins will announce his college choice on Tuesday. Few people might be happier about it than Dave Telep, the ESPN.com national college basketball recruiting analyst. Telep has covered Wiggins’ recruitment from start to finish but even he admitted on Monday that he has no idea where Wiggins will go.

Wiggins, the 6-foot-7 forward from Huntington (W.Va.) Prep, has been down to his final four schools for a while now: Florida State, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina. He hasn’t offered any indication about which of those four schools he’s favoring.
