WTVD morning meteorologist Don Schwenneker, perhaps more commonly known as "Big Weather," will shave his head during Wednesday's 6 a.m. newscast.
Schwenneker, inspired by "Good Morning America" host Robin Roberts, is shaving his head to show solidarity with cancer patients. When Roberts, a recent recipient of a bone marrow transplant, returned to GMA a few weeks ago, Schwenneker promised to shave his head if at least 250 people registered with the National Bone Marrow Transplant Registry at a "Be the Match" drive in Durham last week. 275 people registered.
In addition to honoring Roberts and her battle, the event will also be a tribute to a member of the ABC11 family, Joshua Chavis, who lost his battle with leukemia just days before the bone marrow drive.
Schwenneker will be joined in the WTVD studio by NCCU student Sheldon Mba, who is awaiting a bone marrow transplant. Hairstylist Ray Lingle from Carmen Carmen Salon at the Streets of Southpoint will do the shaving.
We plan to post some "Big Bald Weather" (surely, his new nickname) photos here on Wednesday.
Update: Here's a photo from WTVD of Schwenneker making the transition from Big Weather to Bald Weather. He doesn't look too happy here...
