WRAL is reporting that longtime sportscaster and local broadcasting legend Tom Suiter is stepping down from the lead sports anchor spot.
Suiter's last telecast will be December 18.
Suiter will continue to host Football Friday, the station's weekly show about local high school football games. He will also continue to oversee the Extra Effort Award, given by WRAL to outstanding local high school athletes.
Suiter has been with WRAL since 1971.
Jeff Gravley will take over at the 6pm newscast.
Here's a nice interview Suiter did last month with Vype.

I read this on the WRAL site...
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 19:48 — UNC1998Mr. Suiter is the only sports anchor I've known for the bulk of my life. I remember the extra effort award with the hopes that I may win it (I did not). It just goes to show that time marches on. I hope I get to see many more anchors, as that would mean I live a while longer.
Ms. Caine, It's looking like the Heels are headed to Charlotte? What's the secret word about your Wolfies?

Wed, 12/03/2008 - 20:16 — brookecain (author)I know what you mean - I have been watching Tom Suiter since I was a kid (and Charlie Gaddy and Bob Debarbaladen, etc.). He will be missed!!
I have no secret info on the Wolfies. They are making us sweat it out. I'm grateful for anything, though, because we barely squeaked out the eligibility there at the end, so we can't complain.
