When NC Rep. Virginia Foxx talks about health care, comedian and talk show host Wanda Sykes hears "Enough is enough!" Foxx got called out on "The Wanda Sykes Show" Saturday night for her comments against health care reform, with Sykes likening Foxx's remarks to made-up movie lines.
Sykes spent nearly her entire monologue on the health care debate, and near the end of the monologue she named a couple of Republicans in Congress who are fighting the legislation. She singled out Rep. Steve King (Iowa) and Rep. Pete Hoekstra (Michigan), and then Foxx.
Sykes quoted Foxx as saying that health care reform is more dangerous than any terrorist, then offered this:
"Now come on, that sounds like something from a Harrison Ford movie," Sykes said. "That just shows you how much money they are being paid by insurance lobbies. Nobody says crazy stuff like that for real. That's made up! You get paid to play a role like that. When they say stuff like that, you know what I hear? 'Enough is enough! I have had it with these [blanketyblanking] snakes on this [blanketyblanking] plane!' That's what I hear. It's crazy. They're movie lines."
The blanketyblanking snakes are, of course, from the Samuel L. Jackson classic, "Snakes on a Plane."
You can watch the whole "Wanda Sykes Show" (or just the monologue) at the show's website. "The Wanda Sykes Show" is a new talk show which airs on Saturday nights at 11pm on Fox.
Brooke Cain isn't always proud of the number of hours she logs in front of the TV, but her loss of brain cells can be your gain. From reality shows to sitcoms to the more serious stuff, Brooke keeps her DVR smoking so that she can help keep you in the know.

Foxx is a typical Repug; More Repugs need to be voted out
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 20:52 — Real_Americans_ThinkFoxx is just a typical Repug - spout the same inane blather from the rightwing talking points playbook, spewing disinformation and lies, and fearmongering. It's what the Repugs do best. They have no ideas and no vision. They are the party of NO. They have no solutions to any real problems, and they are the ones who have created the massive problems we face today - the global economic meltdown, costly war based on lies in Iraq, failure to deal with the Taliban and Al Qaeda leading to further destabilization of Pakistan and regrouping of terrorists in Afghanistan, and the list goes on. The repugs have no credibility. Sykes is right on target - the Reps blather inane movie lines regardless of fact. There's nothing American about right-wing disinformation and propaganda campaigns - democracy fails when a major political party resorts to lies, distortions, fearmongering, gamesmanship, and brinksmanship on every single issue. They got voted out in 2008. Apparently, they need to get even more voted out in 2010 and 2012.
Who is "Wanda Sykes"?
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 05:09 — AntiIllegalAlien"The Wanda Sykes Show"? Are you kidding me? How pathetic to give some washed-up, retread comedian, that no one has ever heard of, their own TV show. A show bashing BHO, Harry Reid, or Nancy would get much better ratings.
Those shows are called the O'Lielly Factor
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 20:53 — Real_Americans_ThinkYou rightwingers already have FOX News - We Distort, You Abide. The Wall Street Journal. The Washington Times. What more do you need?
Wanda Sykes
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 04:22 — SweetsieSykes is just another liberal dunce from the entertainment industry. Why is her opinion on the front page. Very few people have any interest in what that burned out heifer thinks.
Very classy - like a typical Repug
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 20:55 — Real_Americans_ThinkVery classy remarks - just like what we expect from a Repug. I'm curious, should we care what Tom Fetzer thinks? Cuz the N&O posts his every inane comment. Should we care what the "tea party" crowd thinks? The N&O posts their fact-free knee-jerk brainless drivel. not to mention the vacuous Sarah Palin. We've had quite a lot of rightwing talking points day after day. Time to call a spade a spade, and occasionally point out the the Repugs basically lie and distort.... truth hurts, doesn't it?
I'm just saying...
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 22:22 — trickydickpksAll these folks who accuse Wanda Sykes of being a racist are probably the same ones who voted for Jesse Helms all those years.
"not people I'd care to meet ...."
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 21:44 — AgentPiercePaul said ...."not people I'd care to meet out in public here in the Triangle. You all are WAY too angry, and few are showing either the education or manners befitting NC."
*************
Are you just reaching that conclusion? I'm probably among "the people you don't care to meet" but the feeling is mutual sir. When I'm at the Mall I play "match the scary looking person to an N&O poster name". It's great fun. I'll look for "paul" the next time. :>)
I guess i am just a bumpkin
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 21:09 — brucem1941I guess i am just a bumpkin from NC, but the name Wanda Sykes really means very little to me. And, frankly, even though I am Republican I don't find Virginia Foxx very appealing. However, anyone who opposes BO's Marxist wealth redistribution agenda has my support. Even if I have to hold my nose!
Historical revisionism - its what the Repugs do best
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 20:59 — Real_Americans_ThinkI guess Mr/Ms. Bumpkin didn't mind the wealth distribution agenda of GWB - take from the poor, give to the rich, and explode the deficit with massive tax cuts for the wealthy. Apparently, when "socialism" benefits the rich, that's okay, but when the government starts to look out for the little guy, the entrenched monied interests run scared. Say, what is wrong with a health care system that does not bankrupt someone just because they get sick? And in what way is health care reform like terrorism? The real terrorism is the right wing gun toting paranoid teapartiers and their anti-American inane hateful tripe.
Well, dang...some folks seem
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 20:55 — im4unc23Well, dang...some folks seem to have their panties permanently twisted 'cause they're freaking out over a television reporter reporting on a state politician who was featured on a television show (particularly a new television show).
Then, their twisted up tightie-whities have these frothing folks finding juvenile ways to create nasty nicknames for other elected officials with whom they apparently don't agree...and seeking to discredit Sykes' opinions based on her sexuality and race (not necessarily in that order).
I just find it interesting, on a few levels, that FOX offered Sykes a recurring weekly series (for now) and that Sykes accepted a show on a FOX channel...and that Virginia Foxx seems woefully ignorant.
Don't y'all have some crosses to burn or something?
AMEN!
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 10:50 — Jen1978Agreed, on all points.
Wow -- a lot of strong opinions here
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 20:11 — paulvailI see both the left and the right are certain of their certainty here. I am often embarrassed by what our politicians say here in NC -- on both sides of the aisle. Having grown up a Washingtonian, we knew anyone elected to office there would say anything to get attention. Neocons preaching morality while sleeping around. Liberals not wanting their own personal gains taxed or shared. It's pretty much always the case. Has been since Adams was president (the first Adams).
But to think the posters here stoop to such levels, over a T.V. blog. Some of the screen names here are from the usual partisan posters who troll the political sections, but there are a whole new bunch of you that look pretty much as foolish as Foxx and Sykes appear in this exchange. I do believe this is my last visit to this part of the website -- not people I'd care to meet out in public here in the Triangle. You all are WAY too angry, and few are showing either the education or manners befitting NC.
Fence sitters
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 21:04 — Real_Americans_ThinkFence sitters like paulvail like to congratulate themselves for criticizing both sides, as if somehow that is "fair." But while you are congratulating yourself from the vantage point of your sanctimonious high horse, you might consider that a politican such as Foxx spewing nonsense to the effect that health care reform is like terrorism basically speaks to the moral vacuousness of the GOP. They can't debate on facts or reason, so they resort to distortion and fearmongering. Given that so many seem enamored of a party that is devoid of ideas and leadership, and that merely offers Sarah Palin as a potential presidential candidate, we could well be heading for a one party system. While I have always opposed the GOP, because they invariably put monied self-interest above what is best for people, I at least used to have some respect for the old moderates of the party. These days, nearly every GOPer is a rightwing extremist neocon. We had 8 years of that under GWB and it did not work out well. Instead of being humbled, they are even more strident than ever. This does not bode well for our future.

Mon, 11/16/2009 - 19:52 — marcus_stahlShe is just another mouthpiece of the US CHamber of Commerce and Americans for(Their own)prosperity. She has been drinking to much of the Faux News Channels teabagger tea. She needs to be sent home next year because she is too dumb to be trusted.
I don't generally care what
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 19:33 — UNCG03I don't generally care what comedians and actors think about politics, and I certainly don't think this deserves to be the top story on the website all afternoon, but anything that brings attention to Virginia Foxx's lunacy and helps get her out of office is fine by me.
Wanda

Mon, 11/16/2009 - 19:04 — prolifeOh dear, here we go again. First, Clay Belly-Aiken and now Wanda Psycho. Who is she anyway and who cares what she has to say?
Foxx and Sykes
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 18:57 — TeddyJackI'm not the biggest Wanda Sykes fan. But, she appeals to her audience, and does the job of entertainer. Foxx appeals to her audience (constituency) as well. But, I would say she's better at drawing huge belly laughs with the unbelieveable string of words that come from her mouth. And, when she does, she DOES make NC look stupid. But she's only the VISIBLE stupid one. It took a lot of stupid people to vote for her, and in parts of this state, they're not hard to find. But, don't feel bad, NC. I'm from Oklahoma, and we have Jim Inhofe, who makes Foxx look like Stephen Hawking (for you people who voted for Foxx, that's like this really smart guy).
similarity
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 21:06 — Real_Americans_ThinkActually, now that you mention it, Virginia Foxx does look like Stephen Hawkin.
Wanda Sykes
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 19:00 — ccobraWanda Sykes is funny in her rolls in movies because that's make believe but when it comes to her opinion in politics she is the perfect example of my favorite saying:
Tis better to keep silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Wanda like so many in Hollywood are so far left they wear a blinder only on their right side and she is about as raciest as all those on the left who claim they care about the black people. If all these rich black people like Wanda,Jessie Jackson,Rev. Wright, Al Sharpton,Farrakhan and the list goes on who have made a fortune on playing the race card every chance they get. They keep telling those who are trying to make it that it's the anti black government who is keeping them down and without the government they couldn't make it. This health care bill is not going to fix the problem with our health care system for any of us black or white Democrat or Republican so every body better read the fine print before you start calling people names.

Mon, 11/16/2009 - 18:52 — countriboyWhat a frothy and insignificant topic for an article. Ms. Cain, did you ever think about doing something more worthwhile--like being a special ed teacher or even a bartender? It's hard to find someone to listen to your troubles these days; shucks, all everyone wants to do is talk about their own. The other day I tried to tell my bartender my troubles and he said he couldn't listen; he was having a nervous breakdown. Think of it; you could get his job, get off the couch in front of the TV and actually accomplish some good in the world.
Thanks for the advice

Brilliant!
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 20:58 — im4unc23Yes, countriboy, Brooke Cain could be a bartender and listen to bad-tippers with no life. Seems as if you know a lot about bars and bartenders and spilling your guts to strangers who offer minimal encouragers with your cocktails.

Health care reform is a highly controversial topic depending on who your talking to. No matter which way we go there will be upset people, so she can't act like her opinion is SO right- it's simply her opinion and the option that best suits her. No one can speak for EVERYONE as to what is best for the whole.

No, I will never learn
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 17:25 — brookecain (author)I know, I guess I will never learn that when prominent NC public figures are mentioned on national television shows, I should just ignore it. (And if you're paying attention, I didn't profess any opinion one way or the other about Foxx, Sykes, or health care). You people do realize that all TV writers write about TV events even if they involve politicians, right? Some TV writers will even write about Sarah Palin on Oprah today (gasp!). In fact, check back here later for our take on that one. So, those who don't want to read about politicians going on television should consider themselves forewarned and stay over in the sports blogs or something. Either way, thanks for reading.

More people might be interested in the newspaper if it concentrated on being a real service to the community.

Sykes is a Racist!
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:51 — JohnlawretAnyone who doesn't worship Wanda's Messiah Obama will catch grief from her. This host is like so many other "Entertainers" who use their "Bully Pulpits" to spout Racist crap then wonder why there is so much seperatism between the races. They do not want a policy of inclusion, that would place to much responsibility on them to act within the mores of society.

Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:48 — RoroCAThe Libertine,
Kay Hagan and Bev Perdue are definitely better folks. You talk about squashing opinions. Opinions are squashed when if you don't agree with the Republicans you are put down as was done in town hall meetings. A lot of that was pushed by the insurance industry, an industry that Republicans seem to be in bed with.
Several years ago, opposition to Iraq was put down as unpatriotic. Now we find out we sere sent there on a pack of Republican lies.
By the way, I love how Foxx news last week used tapes from past protests to show how popular their opinions are for a current protest. Is that what you call Fact...
Sykes is Correct.
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:46 — NCBuff_CaniacFoxx is a fool. BTW, RoroCA, I believe the phrase is "I shudder to think" not I shutter to think.
RoroCA...
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:36 — TheLibertineI suppose women like Kay HAGan and Bevvie PurDON'T make you proud. You know what I find particularly charming about socialists? The blatant lies you tell the world on the most fundamental level about your egalitarianism -- it's the most elitist of all systems -- it squashes dissenting opinion, demands absolute conviction to ludicrous opinion in spite of contradicting fact, and denies personal liberty. It is a utopia for mediocrity.
Wanda Sykes
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:33 — ravencottageWanda Sykes' potty mouth ceased to be amusing years ago. Her new television show will be lucky to make it through the end of the month.

Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:31 — fiestamomI'm talkin' to you Virginia Foxx! Keep it up. You must be doing something right, if a Hollywood "entertainer" highlights you! Doesn't matter what our betters in California think, it matters what the voters of NC think. We're behind you all the way, Virginia!
