Time Warner Cable launches iPhone app

Bookmark and Share

Exciting news (for me, anyway): Time Warner Cable intoduced its iPhone app today.

The app is essentially the same as the TWC app that has already been available for the iPad, it's just that now it works on the phone.

Just install the app -- TWC TV -- from the App Store, and if you've already created an online TWC account (to pay bills or access online content or DVR management), sign in and you're ready to go.

I just took it for a spin and it works pretty well. It certainly looks snazzy. As with the iPad app, you have to be at home on your home network to watch live television content. But you can look at a television guide and manage the programs on your DVR, including setting new programs to record, from anywhere.

The only glitch came when I tried to record a show from the app. I searched for a show through Guide and selected the program, but all I got was episode detail -- no option to record (as you do with the website DVR management). This happened the first four or five times I tried it. Then I left the app and came back in and got a "proxy error." Left the app and came back in and tried once more: searched for the show, selected the episode I wanted, and this time got a screen with a "Record" button.

It could have been a problem on my end because I have "unpedictable" wifi at work ("unpredictable" = "almost no"). Or it could be the strain of millions of people jumping into the app on the first day. Just don't give up if you encounter a glitch like that the first time you try it.

Overall verdict -- I'm thrilled about this for the DVR management alone. THRILLED. On the other hand, I didn't really need another reason to be obsessively checking my phone all the time ... but still, thrilled.

I hope that TWC speeds things up for you guys

I’m happy you all are thrilled about the features of the TWC TV app. I know I was when DISH introduced the same features in their DISH Remote Access app. You can imagine the state of euphoria I was in when I started using my Sling Adapter with the DISH Remote Access app because it works outside of my home as well. I know what you mean about obsessively checking your phone, Brooke, because I know I’m on my phone daily watching my DVR recordings or whatever is on live TV. I hope that TWC speeds things up for you guys with more features like my DISH Remote Access app because it works everywhere outside of my house where I have Wi-Fi or mobile 3G network.

Best feature

The killer feature in their Android app is that you can set up your favorite channels, and then it shows you the program guide for only those channels.  You don't have to scroll through every PPV or premium channel to find out when the game's on.

Why TWC cannot do this on their STB or web based guides, I have no idea.

  I would be more

I would be more frustrated with the fact that the iOS app has the functionality to watch a little bit of live TV within the home network and the Android app still can’t do this.

TWC iPhone app allows selection of Favorites

The TWC app lets you pick your favorite channels. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do. I did this last week: I went to SETTINGS and selected my Favorite channels. Then in Guide, I can touch FILTER and tell it to just show my favorites. Is that what you mean?

Brooke - Raylan & Boyd ARE BACK !!!!!

Elmore has a new season of Justified up and running.  Raylan, Boyd, Wynona and all the Harlan County crazies and crooks are all fussing and feuding.  A brand "really bad guy" has come to town.   Watch your back Raylan...............

I just used it and had no

I just used it and had no problems setting the DVR, so hopefully the traffic is returning to normal.
