The Bachelor host Chris Harrison (left) wrote a blog for Entertainment Weekly this season, and sometimes he'd include some interesting tidbits. Things you (maybe) always wondered about:
"Do they tell the Bachelor in what order to call out the names in the rose ceremonies?" (Yes).
"Did Naomi's mom think she was reincarnated?" (Yes).
Here are some of the behind-the-scenes gems I culled from a season's worth of posts. You can read all of his posts here.
-Chris campaigned to get Jason Mesnick as the Bachelor.
-Jason has NO poker face.
-This is the fourth time they've used that same house (Brad, Matt, Deanna, and Jason).
-On the very first day, the women start getting ready at 9 A.M. but the arrivals don't take place till about 9 P.M. The first rose ceremony isn't till about 4 A.M. They get to bed around 8 A.M.
-A couple of guys with garden hoses wet down the driveway to make it look good on camera for arrivals.
-The women are never ever allowed inside the deliberation room (the creepy room with the pictures and candles and roses).
-On the first night, the girls arrive in a limo, but once rejected they go home in a van.
-There's no TV or internet in the house where the girls stay.
-The girls bring all their own clothes, even the gowns, but sometimes they switch up or share.
-The Bachelor staff offers makeup and hair for the first couple of rose ceremonies but many just do their own.
-They help the last two girls get dresses for the final rose ceremony.
-The Bachelor tells the producers who he's choosing and they tell him the order in which to call the names at the rose ceremony. If he changes his mind in the middle, they adjust.
-Chris's wife gets all the leftover roses.
-At that pool party in the second episode, Jillian didn't shave her legs and was freaked out when she ended up on Jason's back during the chicken fight.
-Jason is not privy to anything that he doesn't see or isn't told by the girls (doesn't watch the video, but Chris does!)
-The men and women on the show can and do workout, but they don't have a gym there. The women do lots of yoga and water aerobics, or climb the very steep hill behind the house.
-The house is stocked full of anything and everything the girls need. Every day producers get a new grocery list of things from certain kinds of salsa to specific acne cream to ping pong paddles. The girls get what they want.
-Megan was the bartender of the house.
-Remember when Jason broke up with Natalie in Vegas? After taking off the million-dollar jewelry, Jason gave her a very nice diamond necklace to keep. She was so mad at him she refused to take it and left the necklace in the limo.
-Molly loves fast food and was so desperate to get McDonald's that she would beg the producers to bring her some everyday. They did give in and bring her some McDonalds. Then I'm assuming she ran up and down that hill behind the house.
-The grass behind the Bachelor's house is astro-turf (installed by the owner).
-Molly did "the first ever Bachelor walk of shame" home after the First Base Tent Sleepover.
-The night Jason sent Nikki home, he had such a tough time with this decision that they had to stop production for almost an hour while he tried to figure out what he was going to do.
-On Naomi's Seattle date with Jason, a sea plane landed and pulled up in front of them. Naomi walked up and said "Cool, I've never ridden in a helicopter before." Chris said they had to break it to Naomi that she still hasn't.
-The house where Jason was staying in Seattle was not his real house, it was rented. Chris commented that even though the house was very cool, he didn't think any parent would really want to raise a kid in a house completely surrounded by water. They used this house because it looked great and was only about ten minutes away from the hotel where all the girls stayed and where the rose ceremonies were held.
-Jason actually lives in Kirkland (which they visited on Deanna's season), outside of Seattle.
-When Jason visited the girls' families, he played beer pong with Molly's family for a couple of hours.
-And at Naomi's, that was really her family's house, even though you could see slot machines in the background, and the bathroom doors had male and female signs on them.
-Also from Naomi's visit, Naomi's mom told Jason she believes she is Joan of Arc reincarnated.
-The booted-off women get taken to a hotel, get food, whatever they
want. When they're ready to go home, they fly them home. But as they
progress in the show, the women stay in town and are sequestered.
-There is a psychologist available for the rejected girls, and they usually take advantage of that.
-On the exotic location dates, the girls get to spend a minimum of two days each with the Bachelor.
-After the end of the show, the Bachelor sees the woman he has picked a
lot, and they talk a lot. "Definitely every Tuesday morning after the
show because there's explaining to do."
-About the breakup timeline ... Jason proposed to Melissa right before Thanksgiving over in New Zealand. After the holidays he told Chris he was struggling with Melissa and that something was wrong and things had changed between them. A few weeks later, Chris heard that Jason was going to break up with Melissa and that he still had feelings for Molly. Chris writes that when he heard that, "my heart sank." He said he loved Jason and Melissa as a couple and "selfishly knew that their success together would be great for our show."
Their break-up ended up being pretty good for the show too!
