It's been a long journey, we've had some good times, some bad times.
Now it's down to the final 3: Evil Megan, her hatted henchman Dyshaun and our self-doubting but sweet Rufflesaurus Johanna.
The 3 begin the show by stating their case for winning. Dyshaun says that in his own way he's a trendsetter. Megan says she's done a lot professionally; "People can Google me and articles from Vogue come up." (I guess if we knew her last name.) Johanna says fashion is her passion.
The show takes an "Apprentice-like" turn by having the 3 interview with Elle editor-in-chief Roberta "Robbie" Myers. Robbie walks out to meet them and Megan calls her "impossibly chic." It's true; her mere prescence makes Anne Slowey seem a hausfrau.
For the interview, Dyshaun takes off his hat. He tells Robbie that he did not read or know a lot about Elle before he joined the show.
Interview Rule #1: Don't tell the people you are interviewing with that you didn't know about their company/product/business until you got there.
When Robbie asks if he has any questions, Dyshaun pulls out a list. His first question: "Where do you see Elle in 10 years and do you see me as part of it?" Ahh, he's going for humor and charm. It appears to work, as Robbie does indeed smile.
Interview Rule #2: Don't attempt humor or charm unless you've been told you are funny or charming.
Always prepared Johanna has a two-page resume. When Robbie asks why she doesn't have a fashion background, Johanna explains that she comes from a family that is all about academics, but after this experience she can't imaging going back to her life as a military analyst that speaks fluent Chinese. She's seems both sincere and human.
When Robbie asks if she has any questions, she asks: "What do you look for in a reporter?"
Interview Rule #3: Ask questions that get the interviewer to explain their philosophy, that allows them to talk about themselves.
Megan approaches the interview with her usual haughtiness, because, she says it should be an easy choice for Robbie. She tells Robbie that she dropped out of Fordham University to start a clothiing store. She tells Robbie that she sold the clothing store because she got bored. A job writing about fashion, she says, is a natural progression.
When Robbie asks if she has any questions, Megan does not.
Interview Rule #4: Have questions.
Later, as the 3 confer, Megan shows she does have a bit of a grip on reality by admitting that it got a little bit awkward in there.
As the judges chat, Robbie shows why she's the editor in chief; she's picked up that Megan does not play well with others. Joe Zee, though, thinks that while she came in like an entitled brat, she's grown and made a turnaround. Joe Zee, you've been punked.
The 3 are called back into the conference room. Robbie has decided that one of them will go right now. Which, of course, means after the commercial break.
Four commercials later, Megan finds out she's right. It was an easy choice for Robbie. Megan is not the right fit.
She leaves quite graciously, telling Dyshaun and Johanna "I'm so happy for you, I really am." She says the experience was worth it, just to meet the two of them and she did the best job she could do. It's a different Megan, the tone in her voice is all light and sweet and there's a little vulnerability.
Hmm. Maybe I was wrong about Megan. She isn't evil. She's just a misjudged 22 year old, who put up a shell to survive a tough competition. Megan is actually a sweetheart!
The 2's final challenge is a tough one: they have to do an Elle cover plus the behind-the-scenes page explaining the cover. Rapper/actress Eve will be their cover star.
And since it's such a tough job, they'll get help. In another Apprentice-y move the last four contestants ousted from the house return, which means Danielle, Ashlie, Dear Sweet Kate and Megan.
In a random drawing, the teams are assigned. Johanna, who must have done something wrong in a previous life, gets both Megan and Kate, leaviing the more amicable Ashlie and Danielle with Dyshaun.
Johanna remarks that she feels uncomfortable getting Megan so soon after she was dismissed; Megan gets the boot one minute and has to serve Johanna the next.
It becomes clear pretty quickly that Johanna's instincts are correct. Megan does not want to be there. Especially with Kate. Remember, as Kate left the show, she called Megan wicked and a liar. Megan brings that up with her usual smirk. Kate gives it right back: "You lost as well so I wouldn't be so cocky."
The remark hits Megan's jugular. And the blood loss makes Megan exhausted. She leaves the table saying she just wants to go to sleep. She disappears. Johanna goes looking for her. Where is she?
Uh, leaving the show. "I'm done! Get out of my face now!" she says to the camera. Jodi the producer asks her what's going on and Megan declares that she is leaving, she is not giving Johanna her ideas, she is done. The "I should have won! I should have won" tantrum goes unsaid.
Yet when the commercials end and the show comes back on, Megan has calmed a bit. She asks to speak to Johanna alone. Johanna says she has no time to talk someone off the ledge and then she appears to do just that by asking Megan whether it matters that her leaving will mean 2 against 3.
Megan says she'll stay. She considers Johanna a friend and she wants to be there for her. Translation: Jodi the producer pulled out the iron-clad Stylista contract and told Miss Megan exactly what was going to happen next.
The cover clothing selection begins and Johanna has a vision. She wants to go with purple; playing on Eve's mogul side and the idea of royalty, and structured clothing. Neither Kate nor Megan are engaged in the process. That's OK with Johanna, she wants to own the cover. Megan thinks by being so specific with her vision Johanna is digging herself into a hole.
Dyshaun, meanwhile, wants to give Eve a range of clothes to choose from. During the shoot, this becomes a bit of a problem. Eve likes one dress, then doesn't. Time runs short.
Meanwhile, Johanna's choices force Eve into a box. She has to assume Johanna's vision.
When the judges come to visit the shoot, Megan says she has done nothing, and pretty much bad mouths Johanna. Kate notices. Kate tells Johanna. Johanna says she doesn't have time for petty fights and then takes the time to confront Megan. Megan denies, denies, denies, then saunters over to spend time with the other team.
Johanna and Dyshaun put their covers together alone.
It's time for the judging and Eve is part of the panel. Dyshaun goes first. His cover lines are excellent, but they find the curtains he decided to shoot Eve in front of distracting. Eve loved the clothes, but found the shoot unorganized.
Johanna's Purple Reign cover goes over well. The cover lines are bad. But the photo is fabulous and Eve, who is not a fan of purple, was won over. Plus, her shoot was organized.
In the end, Anne Slowey must choose. Both, she says, will have careers in fashion. Dyshaun, she says, has a true, innate sense of fashion. Johanna has grown tremendously. But only one can win.
And it's Johanna. She gets the junior assistant job, the NY apartment for the year and a year's clothing allowance to H&M.
Dyshaun is shocked, but seems OK.
Johanna feels her whole life changing. She's handed a single business card, shown an office and is told to get to work.
Wearing a halter-style dress with ruffles around the neck and ruffles around the hem, she swishes in the door, sits down, and begins throwing away all that money her parents spent on a quality education.
