So You Think You Can Dance: The Recap

Bookmark and Share

Guest blogger Lenni Gutafson gives us the scoop on last night's show:

The normally fashion-perfect Cat Deeley hit the stage in what looked like a "big red, left side kite." I know her shoulders are the same width - I've seen them in other strapless outfits. After that initial shock, it was on to the dancing.

To me there were three real star couples of the evening. First, Melissa and Ade who Mary Murphy gave love to saying, "it was tough to find anything in that jazz routine (from Sonya) that I didn't like."

Next, Janette and Brandon doing disco choreographed by Doriana Sanchez. The judges agreed with me that it was the best disco they had seen on any dance show and it was soooo fast. And finally, Asuka and Vitolio doing a waltz to the hauntingly beautiful Enya song, "Dreams are More Precious." The routine from Louis Van Amstel was a lyrical version of the waltz and had Mary Murphy crying, calling it "painfully beautiful."

The couples falling just below the first three were Randi and Evan doing a jive number ("Shake a Tail Feather" by Ray Charles). Another Louis Van Amstel dance which both hastened to tell the judges at least 45 times was "FUN." Fortunately, the judges agreed all 45 times.

Next were Karla and Jonathan doing a contemporary number from new-to-the-show choreographer, Stacey Tookey. Cat said she got the chills watching them dance - or - maybe she got a look at her dress in the monitor and totally freaked. Lil C loved the emotion and technique from both of them and called it my new favorite praise word, "buck." Last in the second group would be Kayla and Max doing a pop jazz routine from Brian Friedman. I really thought the dance, costumes and music were weird and strange. The judges agreed with me on the costumes, didn't mention the music and thought the dancing was good. Maybe I just don't get pop jazz as a concept.

The last group of three for me are Jeanine and Phillip doing a tango from Tony Meredith. Have to agree with Nigel here - it was great entertainment but lacked technique, particularly from Phillip. Doing a Shane Sparks hip hop number to the "Peas" "Immabe" were Ashley and Kupono. As Nigel so aptly said, he was "underwhelmed" by the whole thing.

Lastly, and I do mean lastly, are Caitlyn and Jason doing another Shane Sparks' hip hop routine. As Mary Murphy would say, "Holy smokes, holy Toledo", no chemistry at all. As I would say, it was one "hot mess." Nigel even apologized to Shane for the poor performances by Ashley, Kupono, Caitlyn and Jason of his creations which are usually crowd favorites.

So, no repeaters in the danger zone as far as I'm concerned. Get the feeling that Caitlyn and Jason will be passengers on the "Bye Bye Train" tonight.
