"The Last One," Neal Hutcheson's documentary on the late Appalachian moonshiner Popcorn Sutton, has won an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for Outstanding Achievement in Television Programming Excellence.
Hutcheson, a video producer at NC State known for his work with renowned NCSU linguist Walt Wolfram, made "The Last One" through his own production company, Sucker Punch Pictures. "The Last One" won in the category of "cultural documentary." Winners were announced at the 35th Southeast Regional Emmy Awards this past Saturday in Atlanta.
"The Last One," which has aired locally on UNC-TV, shows the infamous moonshiner making "one last batch" of liquor in the Appalachian mountains. It premiered in November 2008 in the Southern Lens series on South Carolina's public television station, ETV.
Sutton was arrested in 2008 on moonshining and weapons charges unrelated to the film, and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Sadly, Sutton committed suicide in March 2009, shortly before he was to begin his prison sentence.
“Popcorn’s death underscores the cultural preservation value of films like 'The Last One,'" Hutcheson said.
"A fact that I doubt escaped the Emmy selection committee."
Hutcheson (right) also made the documentaries "Mountain Talk," "The Queen Family," "Carolina Brogue," and "The Outlaw Lewis Redmond."

Brooke Cain isn't always proud of the number of hours she logs in front of the TV, but her loss of brain cells can be your gain. From reality shows to sitcoms to the more serious stuff, Brooke keeps her DVR smoking so that she can help keep you in the know.

So sad
Mon, 08/10/2009 - 13:21 — kellyandpeanutI just found out who Popcorn was this week watching the Hillbilly documentary on History Channel this week & recognizing him from the movie Ghost Town filmed in maggie valley I also saw within the week. I thought he would be perfect to interview for my boyfriends anti-government radio show, ad now after googling him find out that he died this year (and he looked much older than he was) 8 days before my birthday. Such a waste. My moms family grew up around Junior Johnson and I don't remember hearing about them being as persecuted. Party on in moonshine heaven popcorn!

Great story!
Tue, 06/30/2009 - 10:51 — TheLibertineCongratulations to the winners. Too bad Popcorn Sutton lost...everything. This documentary should be shown in schools across the country because it shows what your government can do to destroy your life. Sutton was hunted and harassed until he took his own life. And no one will ever pay for that crime.
