Our take on 2010 Emmy nominations

Bookmark and Share

The Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and the big news? "Friday Night Lights" finally got some much-deserved recognition. It's about time, Emmy!

The big nominees this season were "Lost" (predictably), "Glee," "Mad Men," and "The Pacific." Glaring omissions? No nod for "Big Bang Theory," but "The Office" gets a nomination during its worst season ever?? And "Survivor" is left out of the Reality Show category after one of its strongest seasons. Instead, "The Amazing Race" and "Project Runway," who had unusually weak seasons, both got nods. And while I hate to look a "Friday Night Lights" gift horse in the mouth, would it have killed Emmy to recognize Zach Gilford?

We're also bothered by "Glee" and "Nurse Jackie" being in the comedy category, since both shows more often play like dramas with occasional moments of levity. Plus, totally not fair for a full-hour show like "Glee" to be included with traditional half-hour sitcoms. I'm old school about my sitcom categories.

Below is the breakdown of major categories, with my personal pick noted in parentheses. Adrienne may chime in later. Tell us what you think in the comments section below!

A note from "Gleek-land"

I absolutely adore this show and think everybody in it is fabulous.  Agree with some others who wonder how on earth this show ended up in the Comedy category.  Guess it might be because there was no room in the powerhouse Drama category.  Jane Lynch should definitely win for her role on the show and Chris Colfer is fantastic as Kurt.  Not so sure about Lea Michelle and Matthew Morrison who are not very comedic most of the time.  Melodic, yes, just not comedic.  Extra shout out to Brooke - Finally, Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler made the list for "Friday Night Lights".  Think you and I should get an Emmy just for following the show all over the channel guide for so many years.  And, your choice of Tom Bergeron for best host is spot on.  He is one of the most clever emcees ever and certainly is a cut above Jeff Probst who seems to win every daggone time.  Enough already.

Bergeron

The times I have watched DWTS, Bergeron has been pretty funny. That's why he gets my vote.

Oh, if only I could actually vote!

another reality

Bergeron is nimble for sure, but hey, what about RuPaul on "Drag Race"? Lip synch for your life!

I'd vote for RuPaul!

Or Bravo's Andy Cohen!

Emmy folks need to start thinking outside the box on these reality show nominations.

Emmy nominees

So nice to see Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton FINALLY nominated for one of the most accurate, believable portraits of a marriage that's ever been on TV.

All in all, good nominees. Thoughts:

Outstanding drama: "Friday Night Lights" should be here. I vote "Lost" for its great ending.

Outstanding actor/actress drama: Chandler and Britton for the win, of course. Also, glad to see Matthew Fox get a nod.

Supporting actor/actress drama: Agree with Brooke on either Hendricks or her co-star Moss for actress. For the actors, Short's way-against-type lawyer was great. Can't believe FNL's Zach Gilford didn't make the cut here or in guest actor. The death of Matt Saracen's dad was the most powerful hour of TV this season.

Outstanding comedy: My colleagues Brooke and Adrienne are so right. "Modern Family," absolutely.

Outstanding actor/actress comedy: I really like Poehler and want "Parks and Recreation" to get a little love. Hasn't Shalhoub won about 20 of these things by now? Carell is past due, though "The Office" had a weak season.

Supporting actor/actress comedy: Lynch is a gimme. For the men, I just wish Ed O'Neill had joined the "Modern Family" party. I'm split between Burrell and Stonestreet, though Ferguson was hilarious in his epic fight with the pigeon in the house.

Reality show and host: How does "Survivor" not make it for a great comeback season, while "American Idol," so poorly paced it never finishes on time, does? I vote the far superior "Race" (again!) and Keoghan.

Variety show: Though I agree with Brooke that a Conan win would be sweet justice, this is likely to go to Colbert or Stewart. Why is SNL here? Aside from Betty White, its season was pretty awful.

The Drama nominees are

The Drama nominees are awesome this year. Wonderful first nominations for Connie Britton, Kyle Chandler, January Jones, Matthew Fox, and Christina Hendricks. If all the nominees pick the correct sample episode to submit to judges, then Leading Actor in a Drama will be a donnybrook! Should be:

Chandler, "East of Dillon"

Cranston, "Fly"

Hall, "The Getaway"

Hamm, "The Gypsy and the Hobo"

Fox, "The End"

Laurie, "Broken"

Tough to pick a winner from that group.

The Comedy side was a bit of a cluster. When "Glee" is looked at alongside the other nominees when voters sit down to watch reels, all those nominations will seem very embarrassing. And Courteney Cox being snubbed for "Cougar Town" is unforgivable--the worst omission of the year save for Zach Gilford for Guest Actor in "Friday Night Lights".

Nicest surprise: Sharon Gless for "Burn Notice". If she submits "A Dark Road", she could be very competetive. I'm just glad the academy got over all the "Grey's Anatomy" supporting actresses and opened it up.

Emmy picks

Outstanding Drama: Brooke is probably right when it comes to quality but I think "The Good Wife" will win. For non-cable TV, it's very nuanced and smart and I think Emmy votes are tired of cable dominance in drama.

Outstanding actress/drama: Sorry, but why do they keep nominating Mariska? I'm with Brooke, Connie should win because she should have won before (!) but Julianna is not a sloppy second. Actor: Kyle Chandler, same reason as Connie.

Supporting actor/drama: I'm going with Andre Braugher. Definitely glad he wasn't overlooked and would love to see him win. He's so vulnerable in this part. Supporting actress/drama: I'll go with Brooke, but I do think Archie plays a great character.

Comedy: Debate aside (hour-long dramady vs. half-hour comedy), it comes down to laughs. Modern Family is laugh out loud funny.

Outstanding actor/actress in comedy: I'm torn between Louis-Dreyfus and Poehler. They were both ON last season, in every way. I agree Shalhoub had a great final season, although I'll always love Baldwin.

Supporting actor/actress in comedy: Please. If anybody but Jane Lynch wins, it's criminal. But on Modern Family, gotta go with Ty Burrell. Brooke, the dad is HILARIOUS.

Reality show host: I guess Bergeron. What he does is comparable to Seacreast but totally different than the others. Show: Top Chef.

Variety series: Brooke is going with her heart, but we all now night by night Colbert had a great season.

TV Movie: In the running for me -- Temple Grandin and You Don't Know Jack. The performances in Jack were wonderful but I'd give the overall to Temple.

Breaking Bad

If I could just get you to *watch* "Breaking Bad!" It's so amazing!

Ty Burrell is hilarious, but Eric Stonestreet is the funniest on the show to me. So I voted with my heart there. I think Burrell has a better shot at winning because he's on the show more. Some people are saying he should have been nominated in the Lead Actor category (for that matter, where the heck is Ed O'Neill!?!?!).

Variety - yes, going with my heart for Coco, but I bet you he wins... Emmys will be broadcast on NBC, I do believe, so that would be sweet, sweet justice.

Best drama

By the way, they could have left off True Blood and put in Friday Night Lights!

couldn't agree more

True Blood is kind of fun, but it's not in the same category as those other shows.
