NBC cancels "Southland" before premiere

Bookmark and Share

NBC renewed the John Wells cop drama "Southland" for a second season back in May, but just two weeks before the show's season two premiere, they have canceled it.

Geez, why even renew it at all?

The Los Angeles Times reports that the show may have been too dark, and with Jay Leno sucking up all the 10pm time slots, NBC has no room for dark dramas.

Instead of "Southland," NBC will air episodes of "Dateline," which is obviously much cheaper to produce than a scripted show. Sigh.

Wells ("ER," "West Wing") has been openly critical of the Leno programming, and says he will shop "Southland" to another network. "Southland" had just finished the 6th episode of their 13-run order.

You guys are slow. This

You guys are slow. This happened 5 weeks ago. Another network is going to pick up Southland.

Just another link in a chain of bad programming decisions

NBC should be commended for having the courage to give shows like Southland a chance, but then they chicken out and dump a show becaue it doesn't have a gazillion viewers right away. They've been doing this for years dating back to the 1990's with a truly original show like Boomtown and continuing now with Southland and Life. Why they pretend to be interested in good adult programming is beyond me. They seem to think all we want is Leno and pablum.

Regina King

Regina King (ie Detective Lydia Adams) was fabulous! I hope we see more of her soon!
