When Happiness talked to Antonio Sabato Jr., about his show "My Antonio" (VH1, Sunday at 10 p.m.), he said he was very proud of the show and that he wanted to add class to the genre.
Well, I don't know if class is possible when the premise involves dating/kissing/hot-tubbing a bunch of women you just met, but I'll say this: the show's first episode starts things off with a bang.
Sabato, you might know, has a soap opera background, and the show (he's an executive producer) had plenty of soap worthy drama.
His mother shows up dressed, as one contestant says, as if she stepped off the set of 'Dynasty' and promptly breaks one girl down. (It should be said the girl is a basket case and the fact that Antonio does't see that proves his mother needs to be there.)
His ex-wife shows up to win him back.
The eliminations are gentle, but swift, none of that drawing out things with a rose. (He uses a lei, leading to lots of getting lei'd jokes.) There's one in the first 10 minutes.
He makes the women work to win him, almost literally.
Sabato said this was serious, and it shows.
This is definitely no 'Rock of Love.'
