Why worship unsaintly Monk?
Thu, 12/03/2009 - 21:02 — breakPRranksSo, Brooke, maybe it's just because warm televisions are the last thing I'd associate with happiness, but could you or your loyal readers please explain to me the popular appeal behind shows like "Monk"?
What little bit of TV I watch comes to me OTA, so my familiarity with "Monk" is from DVD, and I've seen, maybe, the first two seasons. I didn't make it any further because, although the character of Monk had a novel enchantment at the start, by the second year his charm had worn off entirely. By that time, Mona was the only character worth watching. (Hey, I'm a guy. What can I say?)
Monk is, at his core, a resoundingly inconsiderate, obnoxious, rude and otherwise wholly unattractive sonofabitch; the sort of person none of us would want to spend time around in real life.
So why do folks keep going back for more of programs like this, especially when it revolves heavily around one character who’s so unlikable?

He's not any of those things you mentioned on purpose, he has an illness that makes social interaction with others (and life itself) challenging. I think the show does an excellent job portraying someone with OCD in a sensitive manner, showing both the humor and the pain in living such a life. I'm sorry you didn't get that. It sounds like it's just not your kind of show, so you were right to stop watching. But if you had kept watching, you would have noticed growth in the character, as he became a little better at handling some situations but still struggled with others.
And also, there has never been a character on the show named Mona.
