Happiness is a warm TV

CNBC report shows the visionary behind 'J. Crew'

It's always inspiring to see great leadership; the kind that makes you feel you are in the presence of genius, that seems to cultivate creativity and inspire excellence.

Yes, Mickey Drexler I'm flattering you in an obvious attempt to get hired!

Call me shameless, but after you watch "J. Crew and the Man Who Dressed America" (10 p.m. Thursday and Sunday, CNBC), you'll be taken with Drexler too. The CEO and chairman of the brand is at the center of the well-done, enjoyable report by CNBC's David Faber.

Drexler is no one-hit wonder; the report shows that he has extensive retail experience. His background includes stints at Bloomingdale's and Macy's, before revitalizing Ann Taylor and the Gap. Drexler was fired from the Gap after it grew too quickly and he lost control (the growing wasn't his idea), but J. Crew brought him on and Drexler turned it into a billion-dollar company and a transformed fashionable brand. That Vogue editor Anna Wintour is included in this report speaks volumes.

The comedy is lazy on "Men At Work"

Watching "Men At Work" (10 tonight, TBS) made me think about TNT's "Men of a Certain Age," a show I adored.

But I wasn't thinking fondly. I was thinking how "Men of a Certain Age" was funny and nuanced and sophisticated and had grown men in it. "Men At Work" however, wasn't all that funny, is as subtle as a hammer to the head, and while the men involved are grown, they act like overgrown kids.

The manchildren in question work at a magazine; Milo (Danny Masterson) has been dumped and his friends are trying to help him get his groove back. There's Gibbs, (James Lesure), a photographer and ladies man; Tyler (Michael Cassidy), a somewhat more refined features writer; and Neal (Adam Busch), their nerdy friend with a girlfriend.

What to Watch on Thursday: A Lionel-less 'Duets' debuts

Duets (8pm, ABC) - The premiere of yet another singing competition. This one previously had Lionel Richie attached, but after news broke that Richie owed the IRS some money, he suddenly had "scheduling conflicts" and was replaced by John Legend. And with that change, the show went -- for me -- from "must see" to "not really interested." The competition now has Kelly Clarkson, Legend, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke searching for amateur singers to perform duets with. You know who sang the greatest duet of all time? Lionel Richie ("Endless Love" with Diana Ross).

So You Think You Can Dance (8pm, Fox) - Season 9 begins with auditions in Dallas and New York.

Awake (10pm, NBC) - In the series (nooo!) finale, Britten faces off against his conspirators as the entire police force moves in on him.

Rookie Blue (10pm, ABC) - In the Season 3 premiere, Andy returns to work following her three-month suspension. Later, a car accident caused by a drunken driver (William Shatner) leads to the reopening of a 7-year-old cold case.

J. Crew and the Man Who Dressed America (10pm, CNBC) - David Faber reports on the J. Crew clothing retailer, including the company's process of conceiving, creating and marketing a new line of clothing. Interviews with J. Crew's CEO Mickey Drexler and Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. Here's Adrienne's review.

Men at Work (10pm, TBS) - A new sitcom about four male friends working together at a magazine while also working their way through the challenges of life, love, etc., etc. Here's the review.

DWTS: Playing chicken with a train -- and winning

Our "Dancing with the Stars" blogger Lenni G is pretty thrilled about last night's finale. And we're guessing Donald Driver fans were thrilled they got to see a repeat of the football star's "Playing Chicken with a Train" dance, complete with another live Cowboy Troy performance. Here's Lenni G's recap:

As the Pointer Sisters would say, "I'm so excited and I just can't hide it." What a fabulous finale!

All the Stars were back for some more dancing. My particular favorites were Sherri and lots of guys shaking it big time to "It's Rainin' Men, Hallelujah," and Gladys and Tristan looking totally classy to the tune of "Best of My Love."

Gladys got a second moment on stage singing an absolutely gorgeous rendition of "Memories" from "The Way We Were." Note to show producers - bring this amazing lady back soon and often.

What to Watch on Wednesday: The night's finales include 'Idol' and 'Revenge'

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - The winning singer -- Jessica Sanchez vs. Phillip Phillips -- is revealed. Performers tonight include Rihanna and Aerosmith. Also, last season's winner Scotty McCreery will also be in attendance.

The Middle (8pm, ABC) - In the third season finale, Mike's brother plans to get married at the Hecks' home, but he doesn't run the idea past them first.

Modern Family (9pm, ABC) - The Season 3 finale has Jay and Manny helping Lily get ready for a dance recital and Alex going to her first prom. Also, Haley announces her future plans, which come as a shock to her family.

Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 (9:30pm, ABC) - This first short season ends with June desperately trying to keep pace with Chloe's hard-partying ways. And James is furious when he discovers that Dean Cain's "Dancing with the Stars" dressing room is larger than his.

Revenge (10pm, ABC) - In tonight's explosive season finale, Emily tackles the final stages of her plan while the Graysons continue to self-destruct. And from the looks of this photo from ABC, Emily and Nolan are going to have to get out of crazy mess at some point (glad to see Nolan is alive!).

Law & Order: SVU (10pm, NBC) - In the 13th season finale, an underage escort is murdered at an upper-crust bachelor party, and the detectives are cautioned to be discreet because of the names on guest list.

DWTS: A nearly perfect night of dancing

Our "Dancing with the Stars" correspondent Lenni G recaps a busy -- and nearly perfect -- night of dancing:

It's finals night of the best season of DWTS and it certainly didn't disappoint. For the first of two dances, each couple did a judges' pick, described as a style they had done previously that the judges felt needed some improvement.

William and Cheryl, with an assist from Bruno (surprise, NOT), did a cha cha that sizzled (as usual). Len called it, "as good as any cha cha he had seen in 14 seasons." Bruno said it was a delicious "Cuban cocktail," and that William's hip motion was "sex on legs." Carrie Ann congratulated William on adding sophistication as well as sharp and defined moves to his always present "magic." Judges' scores - 10's from all three for a total of 30. So, the evening starts "perfectly."

Giveaway: Audiobook of Dan Rather's new memoir

Giveaway time!

This time it's an unabridged audiobook of Dan Rather's new memoir, "Rather Outspoken."

Rather was the anchor of the "CBS Evening News" for 24 years.  In the memoir, he tells the story of his final months at CBS, including his removal from the anchor chair in the wake of the controversy surrounding his story on George Bush and the Texas Air National Guard.

Rather, who reported from wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan and covered every U.S. president since Dwight Eisenhower, looks over his entire career and his upbringing in Houston, Texas.

The audiobook is read by Rather and a PDF of photos is included on one CD.

If you're interested, send me an email by midnight Friday (include your mailing address, please) and someone will be selected randomly.

Eric Braeden aka Victor Newman of "The Young and the Restless" loves North Carolina

It's kind of giddy making when you hear Eric Braeden's voice on the phone.
This is the man, after all, who has played the iconic Victor Newman -- The Mustache as his nemesis Jack Abbott calls him -- the bazillionaire anti-hero on "The Young and the Restless" for more than 30 years.

It's that voice; the elegant German accent that's both lilting and masculine and that makes saying stuff like "I'm Victor Newman and I do as I damn well please. I always have and I always will" sound pretty fabulous.

So you can imagine the glee when the first thing he says on the phone during a break from a "Restless" shoot is, "Can you believe it? Yesterday, I was at a pig pickin' in Bath and today I'm working in Los Angeles."

Why am I not taping this?!

Seems Braeden was in the Tar Heel state recently screening "The Man Who Came Back," a film he starred in and produced in 2008. "You live in a beautiful state," he says. "The people could have not been more hospitable."

What to Watch on Tuesday: Season finales for 'Dancing with the Stars,' 'Glee'

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - The two finalists perform in part one of the season finale, and last season's winner Scotty McCreery also performs. The winner is revealed tomorrow night.

Glee (9pm, Fox) - It's graduation time (and season finale time) for McKinley High's class of 2012 and the glee kids look back on their time in high school and contemplate their futures. Gloria Estefan guest stars as Santana's mother.

Dancing with the Stars (9pm, ABC) - A winner is announced in the 14th season finale.

The L.A. Complex (9pm, CW) - Nick meets a kindred spirit after an improv class and Connor struggles with keeping up appearances on set.

Frontline: Cell Tower Deaths (10pm, UNC-TV) - Frontline examines the toll taht building and servicing America's cellular infrastructure is taking on cell-tower workers, who are 10 times more likely than average construction workers to die on the job.

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (10pm, HBO) - Segments include a look at why Korean women dominate the LPGA Tour and another visit with NYC fireman Matt Long, a marathoner and Ironman competitor who overcame a serious bike accident.

Scotty goes back to 'Idol' for its last shows of the season

Scotty McCreery is heading back to the show that made him famous this week as "American Idol" crowns its newest winner.

Scotty, the Garner High School student who won Season 10 of the popular singing show a year ago, will perform on Tuesday night's show and then be on hand for the blowout "Idol" finale on Wednesday night.

On that show, either Phillip Phillips of Leesburg, Ga., or Jessica Sanchez of San Diego will be named the winner of Season 11. (Even without hearing their final songs, we'd bet the ranch on Phillip.)
