Our "Lost" blogger Luci Chavez on last night's episode...
Nothing makes me happier than seeing the gang all back together in this Hurley-centric episode. But the Tryon Road Council of One is still deliberating the wisdom of Hugo taking a leadership role in this nasty conundrum we know as Lost.
The big shibiznit is coming and it's going to be bloody. There will come a time when someone needs to straight-up shoot someone or bash someone in the head with a gun or a boot or a tree branch. Hurley, God love him, isn't THAT guy.
This makes me so nervous for the end, and by the end, I mean five episodes from now.
SPOILER ALERT.
Los Angeles. Why does this sound like an intro to The Actors' Studio? Oh wait, Hurley (Jorge Garcia) is getting an award. Yeah, Hugo! Apparently, in the What-If-The-Plane-Didn't-Crash Alternate Reality (WITPDCAR), Hugo is a philanthropist. He's used his lottery winnings to build a Mr. Clucks dynasty and giving away money and built hospitals and such all over. And there's Dr. Chang giving the award.
Funny because Hugo's mom isn't all that impressed. Apparently, Hurley's been getting a lot of awards lately. Mom doesn't want to go to another reception. All this Mexican woman cares about is getting Hugo married. He claims he's too busy for women, that he's not scared. So Mom's like, OK, then you'll go out on this blind date I set up with Don Paquito's daughter Rosalita. Sweet. (My first question: Where the hell is Libby?)
Island. Cemetary. There's Hugo at Libby's grave. He's admitting to her that he speaks to ghosts and asks Libby to come visit him. (Oh, Hugo.) Ilana (Zuleikha Robinson) rolls by on her way to the Black Rock for some TNT. Hugo tells her about the first-date-that-never-was with Libby, how Michael killed her then he starts hearing voices again and there's Michael.
(Missed you, Harold Perrineau! I love the Michael character. Michael was the only one who stepped to Jin when Jin was being such a jerk, jerk verging on abusive husband, to Sun. And I know he killed Ana Lucia and Libby but he was desperate to get Walt back! And was under Ben's maniacal influence.)
Yeah, Michael is a ghost but he's here to help. "I'm hear to stop you from getting everyone killed." (I'm encouraged. Hugo has never been led astray by his apparitions.)
Hugo wonders if he should trust Michael. Michael tells him not to blow up the plane, per Richard's instructions, or he'll kill a lot of people. Hugo doesn't understand why Michael wants him to stop it. "Because people are listening to you." (I know! Crazy, huh?) Foxy shows up to fetch Hugo because they're all leaving to go blow up the plane.
Los Angeles, WITPDCAR. One of the 10 million great little Mexican restaurants in the greater L.A. area. Hurley waits on his date. It's Libby (Cynthia Watros). No, she's not Rosalita. She's LIbby. Hugo stumbles over his words, trying to figure out how she knew him. Libby is a fan, I can tell. Wait. More than a fan. "Hugo, do you believe two people can be connected like soul mates? ... You don't remember me, do you?"
Hurley tries to remember but then Dr. Brooks comes by to corral Libby back into the mental hospital van because she "wandered off." Good lord. Libby was crazy before they crashed on the island. And Libby is crazy in WITPDCAR. Great.
Island, beach, Team Alpert. Ilana has returned with six sticks of dynamite and they're planning to leave on the outriggers. Hurley finally speaks up. Not a good idea to blow up the Ajira plane. "How does blowing it up protect us? We can't leave either if we blow it up," he says.
Ilana gets impatient. She's going to do whatever Richard says because Jacob said Richard would know what to do. (It's like freaking sixth grade on the island, I'm telling you.) "That thing (Black Locke) is evil," Ilana says as she puts the bag of TNT down and promptly blows herself up.
CHICK THAT KICKED SAYID IN THE FACE DOWN! CHICK THAT KICKED SAYID IN THE FACE DOWN!
Island, jungle, Team Black Locke. Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and Kate (Evengeline Lilly) huff and puff about why no one is going after Jin. Then Black Locke (Terry O'Quinn) drops the MOST IMPORTANT NUGGET OF THE EPISODE.
"We're waiting. We were only able to come her because we came together. If we want to leave, we have to do it the same way. We're waiting for Hugo, Sun, and Jack." (Oh, they're getting stuck here. I know it. They're NEVER leaving! NOOOOOOOOOO!)
Kate rightfully calls BS on that plan. "Not gonna happen, my friend." Black Locke says it will. And here comes Sayid (Naveen Andrews), who wants to have a private chat with Black Locke. They wander off and there's Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick), tied to a tree.
Island, beach, Team Alpert. Hurley finds a bag of marbles. No, really it's a little bag of something he doesn't show anyone. Richard (Nestor Carbonell) wants to go for more dynamite. Jack (Matthew Fox) wants to know if he has to break a promise to Sun about getting her off the island. Hurley says Richard is right. "Trust me Jack." And in a freaking twist of whatever, he does. (Foxy, I demand you explain yourself. This is RIDICULOUS.)
Los Angeles, WITPDCAR. Mr. Clucks. Hurley, obviously in a bad way, orders a bucket and catches Desmond staring. Brotha recognizes Hurley from Oceanic 815. Hurley is annoyed but Desmond sits down and promptly comments on how much chicken Hurley is eating. "I eat when I'm depressed."
Desmond realizes this is about a girl. "She's totally awesome except she's crazy. I'd remember if we had met." "Tell me brotha, did you believe her?" Desmond tells him to follow his gut. "Try to find out where she thinks she knew you from." And yep, Desmond's order number is called and its 42. How convenient. (The writers think they're so cute.)
Island, jungle, Team Black Locke. BL cuts Desmond loose after he calmly explains he has nowhere to run. Des explains about getting blasted with the electromagnetism by Daddy Widmore and knows it was what it was because he'd survived it before. Black Locke wants to know if Desmond knows who he is and Desmond correctly IDs him as John Locke. Black Locke sends Sayid away.
Island, jungle, Team Alpert. Ben (Michael Emerson) is talking again. (Why do they let him talk? Don't let him talk. I feel better that Jack is walking behind Ben with a gun.) "The island was done with (Ilana). It makes me wonder what will happen when it's done with us." (Ben has been demoted but he still scares me.) The group makes it to the Black Rock. Hugo beat them there. And the Black Rock explodes. (Smooth move, Ex-Lax.) Richard: "Why the hell did you do that?" Hurley: "I'm protecting us."
Richard is complaining about not having anymore TNT. Jack tells him to zip it. Hurley explains, "Michael told me to blow it up. He's one of the people who comes back and yells at me after they die." He tries to explain it to Miles (Ken Leung), who has some experience listening to dead people. "Dead people are more reliable than alive people." (Profundo, Hugo. Verdadero.)
Santa Rosa Mental Hospital, WITPDCAR. Doctor's office. Hugo goes to see about Libby and asks to see her. The doctor says no because Libby is not right in the head. Hurley buys his way in with $100,000. (Sweet power play.)
Libby is excited to see him. Hugo still doesn't remember but asks what she remembers. "I know it won't make sense ... A few days ago, this commercial came on. I saw you and it was like I was hit over the head. These memories came back. Only it was another life. ... There was a plane crash and I was on an island. We knew each other. We liked each other. When I got here, it was like I'd been here before. I had a memory of you being here, too. That's why I had to talk to you. If you remember me ... " (and she doesn't say it but fill in the blank with "then I'm not crazy.")
Hurley wants to remember but doesn't. He apologizes. She still thinks she's crazy. "Yeah probably but we all have something, right? I'm scared just saying hi to a girl." Libby says he's doing fine and Hugo smiles, which is the best. He asks Libby out.
Island, jungle, Team Black Locke. "This island has it in for all of us," Des says. Then they both see someone young man in the jungle. BL says ignore him. Who the heck was that?
Island. Team Alpert. They decide to look for some explosives at the Dharma barracks but Jack, because he's a feeler and a doer, wants to talk. Richard says there's no time. "You got another plan? Let's hear it."
Hugo pipes up, saying they have to talk to Black Locke and claiming it's "Jacob's idea," as if Jacob is there chatting to him. Richard wants proof. "Ask (Jacob) what the island was. He told me." Hurley answers as if speaking for Jacob, "I don't have to prove anything. Come with me. Or keep trying to blow stuff up."
Richard calls Hurley's bluff and says, "If the plane leaves, everything is over. Who's coming with me to trash it?" Ben and Miles, do. Jack, Sun, Frank, decide to stick with Hugo. Hugo is just as shocked as I am but Jack backs him up. (I want to reiterate how very uncomfortable I am with Hurley in a position of power. He is good but the island corrupts.)
Island, Team Hurley, jungle, night. Searching for Godot, I mean Black Locke. Hurley asks Jack what to say to BL. Jack doesn't know. "Don't worry. He'll probably do most of the talking." They agree this little trip could end badly for them. Hurley admits to Jack that he didn't see Jacob. Jack already knows. Hurley doesn't understand why Jack would follow him.
(Here we go. Finally. Tell me, Foxy. Tell me why. Please!)
"Ever since I got Juliet killed, all I've ever wanted was to fix it. But I can't fix it. I can't ever. You have no idea how hard it has been to sit back and listen to what other people tell me to do. Maybe that's the point. Maybe I'm supposed to let go." (You're killing me. Of course, Foxy. I'm sorry I've been so mean to you! I understand now.)
Hurley says he still fears getting everyone killed. It is his idea to see BL, after all. He fears for Jack and wonders why Foxy would trust him with so much. "Hurley, you asked me and I trust you." (Foxy said something like that. I was a little emotional at this point because Jack was back to being Jack. My typing went south.)
Hold your horses, people. Jack is pointing his gun at someone. YES!!!! They're all hearing the voices in the tree but Hurley knows what that is. He walks into the dark and, damn it, if Dr. Feelgood doesn't follow. Hurley calls out to Michael and Michael appears.
Hurley figures something out, the SECOND MOST IMPORTANT NUGGET OF THE EPISODE. "You're stuck on the island, right? There are others here like you. Because of what you did. That's what the whispers are, right?" Michael confirms all of it; they're the ones "who can't move on."
Michael points the way to Black Locke but, before they leave, Hurley asks if there's anything he can do to help Michael. "Don't get yourself killed. ... Hey Hurley, if you ever see Libby again, tell her I'm very sorry." (Tears.)
Los Angeles, WITPDCAR. The beach. Cheese picnic with Libby. Libby is having deja vu. Hurley still not sure why Libby would want to be with him. She likes you, you big dork! "Yeah, but you like me because you're delusional." Then Libby lays one on Hugo, who closes his eyes and starts seeing flashes of the moments they shared on the island. He can feel it as if it happened. He remembers now. "Dude. I think I'm remembering stuff." Ah, the magic kiss. Libby isn't crazy. Hallelujah.
Island. Team Black Locke. Jungle, in a clearing with a well, the one that leads to one of the stations. (Right? Was that where the hatch was? I can't remember that bit. They've been here before.) BL tells Desmond the well is so old, people had to dig it by hand. They weren't looking for water, but answers. "It's one of those places that spins the compass needle but they never found out why." BL wanted Des to see the well to explain Widmore isn't in it for answers but for power.
"[Widmore] brought you back to find what he was looking for. Why aren't you afraid, Desmond? You're out here, in the middle of nowhere, with me and no one knows you're here?" Desmond says there's no point in being afraid but I'm afraid. And Black Locke promptly pushes Desmond into the well. BROTHA DOWN! BROTHA DOWN!
Black Locke tells Sayid, who just showed up, "We don''y have to worry about him anymore." Here comes Team Hugo. (Here's the confrontation we've been waiting for. Right? Right?)
Hurley: "I don't know who you are or what you want but we have to talk to you. We both have weapons. We don't want anyone to be hurt or killed. So we're not going to do anything but you have to promise same thing." Black Locke gives up his whatever as a sign of good faith. (I'm not liking this at all.) There's Hugo with Jack, Frank, and Sun. And there's Black Locke with Sawyer, Kate, Sayid and Claire. How cute. Kate just smiled at Jack. Then Jack catches his first good look at the guy he saw in the coffin. Black Locke: "Hello, Jack."
Los Angeles Unified, WITPDCAR. Desmond stalking the school, stalking Wheelchair Locke. Ben comes over because he thinks Desmond is a pedophile. Desmond defuses the situation, then promptly runs Locke over. VOLLEYBALL COACH DOWN! VOLLEYBALL COACH DOWN!
Oh no. No, no, no, no, no. Not the creepy Gene Wilder, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, take us down the tunnel in the boat music. AAAHHHHHHH!
