Lost finale recap - The End, part 3

Bookmark and Share

The last installment of Luci's 3-part "Lost" finale recap (read part 2):

SPOILER ALERT

A taxi arrives at a church. It's Real Locke in WITPDCAR. He gets into his wheelchair. He sees Ben outside. Ben apologizes for everything. "I was selfish. Jealous. You were special, John. And I wasn't." "Ben, if it helps, I forgive you." Ben chooses to stay outside even though everyone else is inside. (A self-imposed penance perhaps?) Ben tells Locke he doesn't need the wheelchair anymore and Locke walks into the church on his own two legs.

Back on the island. Ben tends to Desmond outside and Hurley is inconsolable. Jack is gone. "It's my job now. What the hell am I supposed to do?" Ben says, "Do what you do best. Take care of people. Start by helping Desmond get home." Hurley wonders if that's possible; Jacob said it wasn't. "That's the way Jacob ran things. Maybe there's another way." Hurley brightens. "Will you help me?" And Ben looks so encouraged, I immediately forgive LIndelcuse for Snapifying him (turning an evil character good at the very end).

In WITPDCAR, Hurley pops his head out of the church and sees Ben sitting there. Ben still won't come in. "You know, you were a real good No. 2," Hurley says. "And you were a great No. 1, Hugo."

Jack and Kate drive up. Jack knows it's the church where he wanted to have his dad's service. Kate knows this; it's why she brought him here. She tells Jack to go in around the back. "Where are you going?" "Inside. I"ll be waiting for you there when you're ready." "Ready for what?" "To leave."

On the island, Jack is tore up when he wakes up on a rock near a stream. He tries to get up but he can barely stand. He starts walking and just keeps going though you wonder how much more he has left.

Back in the alternate reality that is looking more and more like the afterlife, Jack goes inside. He finds the coffin and, as he touches it, he finally has his flashbacks. Running to save everyone on the beach. Saving Charlie and Shannon. Laughing. Crying. Fighting. Kissing Kate. He opens the coffin and it's empty.

His dad is standing behind him. Christian Shephard (John Terry) speaks to Jack. "Hey, kiddo." "Dad? I don't understand." Christian doesn't either though he did die. "How are you here right now?" "How are you here?" Jack realizes he is dead and starts crying. "It's OK. It's OK, son."

Jack wants his dad to be real. Christian is real. "Everything that ever happened to you is real. All the people in the church, they're real, too." Are they dead?" Everyone dies sometime, kiddo. Some of them before you. Some of them after you." Why are they here now? "There is no 'now' here."

Where are we, Dad? "This is the place you all made together, so you could all find one another."

(What an incredibly comforting thought. That you can keep all the love you gave and made and received when you go.)

"They're so important to you. The most important part of your life was the time you spent with these people. That's why all of you are here. Nobody dies alone. You needed all of them and they needed you." For what? "To remember. And to let you." Kate said we were leaving. "No. Moving on." Where are we going? "Let's go find out."

Jack walks in and everyone but Michael and Walt are there. (Why not?) They hug and say hello. Everyone is smiling.

On the island, Jack is still walking but he's slowing.

In the church, Locke greets Jack, "We've been waiting for you," There's Penny and Desmond but no little Charlie. Jack and Desmond hug. Jack and Boone hug.

On the island, Jack has reached the bamboo forest. He can't go much further.

In the church, Hurley picks Jack up in a big bear hug. Shannon and Sayid are looking at Aaron, held by Claire and Charlie. Jack and Sawyer hug. Kate is nearby, smiling at Jack. She reaches for his hand.

On the island, Jack is still walking.

In the church, Kate takes his hand and they go to sit down in the front pew.

Jack falls down.

Kate grabs Jack's hand again and they lace their fingers together.

Jack holds his wound.

Everyone sits with their loved one in the church pews. There's Rose and Bernard. Sun and Jin. Juliet and Sawyer. Hurley and Libby. Christian walks to Jack and places his hand on Jack's shoulder.

Jack falls down. Then he hears Vincent come out of the jungle, just like it happened the day he crashed here on Oceanic 815. Vincent licks Jack's face and sits next to him. Jack is comforted and smiling and he looks up to the island's blue, blue sky.

Christian opens the church doors, letting in the great bright white light.

Jack looks up and sees the Ajira plane fly overhead. He smiles. An then he dies, closing his eye.
