Lost finale recap - The End, part 2

Bookmark and Share

More from Luci Chavez on last night's "Lost" finale (read part 1 of recap here):

Juliet, Claire and David (Dylan Minnette) are walking into he concert in WITPDCAR. Juliet has to go back to the hospital, I presume. Charlie is passed out in the green room until the lovely Charlotte wakes him. "I got shot by a fat man." Daniel Farraday/Widmore (Jeremy Davies) is in the green room, too. He and Charlotte meet.

Outside, David and Claire sit at Table 23 with Desmond and Kate. (The producers think they're so cute.) Dr. Chang is emceeing the event. It is his museum after all. Daniel Widmore is going to jam with Drive Shaft while playing classical piano. Highly unlikely in real life because, in my mind, Drive Shaft is basically Oasis but I don't even care because there is Charlie with his bass looking just shy of sober! Yeah!!!!

Charlie looks out into the crowd and finally spots Claire. And Claire sees him looking back before she goes into labor and bolts for the bathroom.

On the island, Desmond is down in the pit with the big light. It's like a little lagoon. He steps in. The place begins to shake and the electromagnetism goes off. Des fights to the middle where the light is brighter and pulls the big carrot-looking wine stopper out of the hole. That forces the water to leak out and then everything goes black. Holy loss of power, Batman. That can't be good.

Then a big flame shoots out of the pit. Desmond is caught down there. Oh no, Brotha! Jack and Smoky can hear him screaming. Smoky chooses that moment to get snarky. Nanny, nanny, boo boo, I was right. "Looks like you were wrong. Good bye, Jack." Blah, diddy, blah, blah. Smoky takes off but not before Jack regains his mega-butch Jackness, follows Smoky out and punches that jackhole right in the kisser. Uh!!!

And, holy mortality! Smokey starts bleeding! (YEEEEEEEESSSSSS!) "Looks like you were wrong, too." (Oh snap! Good one, Foxy.) Yes, Jack. Kick his ass!!!!! Oops. Got ahead of myself. Jack takes one in the kisser. FOXY DOWN. FOXY DOWN.

WITPDCAR. Backstage where Claire is in labor. Kate to the rescue!!! (Remember Kate delivered Aaron on the island.) Back to the very special Widmore-Drive Shaft composition. Eloise Hawking (Fionnula Flanagan) is giving Des the hard eye for letting Daniel play but wants to know what happens now. "Are you going to take my son?" Des says no.

Backstage in the delivery room, Charlie shows up only to be sent away by Kate to fetch blankets and water. Kate helps Claire, telling her to not be scared, telling her to push. Kate is touching Claire and both of them begin to remember being on the island. And there's Aaron. And everyone is crying. Again.

Here comes Charlie with the blanket. So sweet. Kate thanks him but Charlie can't understand why she's so thankful. "It's just a blanket." Kate tells him to wrap the baby with it. In the doing, Claire grabs Charlie's hand and Charlie remembers all of it and it's too sweet, too lovely as we see their moments together again - the flirting, the smiling, the peanut butter.

(Charlie and Claire had such a sweet relationship; pure in its way. It was one of the reasons I missed Charlie so much.) All of that comes pouring back out of both of the characters in this moment. "Claire?" Charlie is crying now. Claire is crying. Luci is crying for the 15th time in the last three hours. They kiss and it's so sweet as Charlie acknowledges Aaron.

Back on the island, there's an earthquake and the biggest storm we've ever seen on the island. Actually the island is just breaking apart. Ben gets trapped under a tree. The rain revives Jack who goes back into the pit of light and tries to get Desmond out. Kate, Hurley and Sawyer are trying to help Ben. It's super wet and rainy and earthquakey.

We hear Miles coming over on the walkie, telling them Lapidus is going to have the plane fixed in an hour. (One of the truly remarkable feats of technical know how in the series. Apollo 13-esque.) Ben says Black Locke has a boat they can take to Hydra Island and the plane. Elsewhere, Locke is standing on that scary looking cliff, the one with the ladder going straight down to the beach. Which would be kinda scary, like Smoky's about to get away with it but no.

HERE. COMES. FOXY. (You're my boy, Blue!)

Foxy takes a running leap at Smoky and smashes him in the face. And it's so Brad-Pitt-as-Achilles-from-Sparta-defeating-the-Trojans that I'm having trouble breathing and cheering and swooning all at the same time. They proceed to fight a fight like we haven't seen since the 5-foot-6 Sayid took on and somehow mastered the 6-5 Keamy back in Season 4. Ouch!

Choke him, Foxy! Come on!!! Yes, preferably before the rest of that cliff falls into the ocean and you with it. Oh no, don't let him stab you in the gut! Oh no, Smoky has the big boar-killing knife to Foxy's neck. (That explains the cut in sideways world). And just when it looks like Foxy will perish ...

KATE TO THE RESCUE! Kate puts a bullet in Locke's back. YES!!!!!!!! (She was saving that one for you, ya punk!) Black Locke tries to get in one last word but jack gets up and kicks his fool ass over the side of the cliff and stands there like the winner of a wet t-shirt contest looking all hard and cool and dope with his his these-aren't-stunt-tattoos tattoos.

(I don't have the words to tell you how satisfying that was.)

Back at the hospital in the alternate reality, Jack is talking to the nurse after the surgery and notices he has a cut on his neck. Jack wants to go see David at the concert but Locke wakes up. Milagro! Milagro! Locke says he's OK and he can feel his legs. "It worked." Jack doesn't believe him until he sees the man wiggle his toes, just like Locke did on the island and, yep, that sends Locke to remembering his own island past.

"Did you see that?" Locke asks. Jack doesn't know what's going on but he's seeing flashes of his own and won't admit it. "Let's go," Locke says. Jack is like WTH? I just cut your spine. And, BTW, I gotta go see my son. "You don't have a son." And that freaks Jack out. "Jack," Locke says, "I I hope that someone does for you what you just did for me." And he ain't talking about the surgery. "You helped me remember what was important."

Back on the island, Jack is down and hurting from the knife wound. Kate tries to comfort him as Jack jokes, "Give me some thread and I'll count to five." (Awwwww!) Kate thinks the worst is over now that Locke is dead but the island keeps quivering and shaking. Not so fast, Freckles.

Sawyer is in the hospital in the WITDPCAR and goes to Sun's room. Sun and Jin see Sawyer and they smile so brightly it hurts to look at them so happy. Especially Jin. (Oh my, he's so handsome!) Sun reassures James that she doesn't need protection. No, not even from Sayid. Before she and Jin walk out, Sun says to James, "It's OK. I am safe. We'll see you there." (Where is there? That is the question of the episode.)

On Hydra Island, Frank works on the plane, resets the electronics and sends Miles with duct tape to go fix the hydraulics. On the main island, Ben tries to call Frank on the walkie. Frank ignores him and Ben, always cool, always cucumber to the bone, says, "He's working on it" or something like that. Either way I"m laughing and not feeling, for the first moment ever, like Kate needs to shoot Ben next.

Still on the cliff, Jack figures out that he has to turn back on whatever Desmond turned off. He tells the others to go to the plane. Kate doesn't want to hear it. Jack and Kate are looking at each other so hard. Sawyer steps in to shake Jack's hand and wish him good luck. (Why didn't they hug? Come on!) "Thanks, Doc, for everything." Ben decides to stay with the island. So does Hurley because Jack is his guy. "I believe in you, dude." (This is why everybody loves Hugo. Have you ever had a moment of not loving Hugo over the past six years?)

Jack and Kate are backing to staring at each other. Jack wants Kate to go, to get Claire, to get on the plane. Kate can't make herself leave. Here's the moment for saying all the important things. "Tell me I'm going to see you again." Jack cannot. They kiss.

("O, wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied, Lindelcuse? ... What satisfaction canst thou have tonight? The exchange of thy love's faithful vow for mine.") Kate tells Jack how she feels and, even bleeding like a stuck pig, Foxy smiles his smile-through-tears smiles and replies, "I love you." Kate turns to leave Jack and the goodbye is too much to bear. I think I'm literally covering my teary eyes at this point.

Miles fixes the hydraulics. "I don't belive in a lot of things, but I do believe in duct tape." (Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!) Sawyer calls on the walkie telling them to wait but the island is falling apart and they gotta get from the big isle to Hydra with a quickness. Sawyer knows they can't run to the boat and go. They have to jump off the cliff together. And because Sawyer and Kate both have boiling lava running inside their veins, they jump into the drink without a second thought.

Back at the hospital in WITPDCAR, Sawyer runs into Jack and asks him where he can get something to eat. Jack sends him to the vending machines where his cookies get stuck. Juliet shows up to help him. And Sawyer being Sawyer, i.e. always on the make, smiles his smile at her. Juliet eventually hands Sawyer the cookies and when they touch it all comes rushing back. They remember.

They jump back from each other like they've been shocked. "Did you feel that?" They're babbling to each other all the while remembering their time together, all of it, even Juliet dying. They're both crying as they embrace and Sawyer says, "I gotcha baby. I gotcha." (I never cared for the two of them together until now. I'm too easy.)

Still in L.A., Jack arrives too late at the concert. Kate sees him and goes to talk to him. Who you looking for? He says his son. Do I know you? Jack wants to know. Kate reminds him they were on the Oceanic flight. Jack says OK but feels there is more.

And that's enough for Kate. She approaches Jack and reaches for his face, "I've missed you so much." Then Jack really feels it. He's remembering but our man of science still can't fully embrace what is happening. "Who are you?" "I know you don't understand. But if you come with me, you will."

Back on the island, Jack, Hurley and Ben head back to the big light but Jack says he's going alone back down into the hole. Hurley is distraught. "How are you going to survive?" But he realizes Jack will die, that he is sacrificing himself. "I'm not going to let you die." "Hurley, I'm already dead." "No, this isn't how it's supposed to happen. The island needs you." "No, the island needs you. It needs to be you, Hugo."

Jack was destined to save the island from evil; Hurley was destined to be the new Jacob. "Hurley, I believe in you." And Hurley bawls. And whenever Hugo bawls, I bawl, too.

Jack gives Hurley some water from the magic stream and, voila, Hurley is the new Jacob. (I have appreciated more Matthew Fox's sublime ability to cry or almost shed tears in 20 different ways than I am tonight.) Ben and Hugo lower Jack down into the pit of the big light as the island continues to split apart.

Jack falls hard. He finds Desmond, who is OK. Desmond is confused. "It didn't work. I thought I'd leave this place." Jack hauls Des up and ties him to the rope, all the while bleeding from a knife wound in his side. He wants Des to go be with Penny and little Charlie. "What about you, Jack?" "I guess I'll see you in another life, brother." (Des said that to Jack at the stadium when they first met.)

Kate and Sawyer wash up on the Hydra shore and see Claire. Time is running out. Lapidus is starting the plane engine. Claire doesn't want to leave. She says she's too crazy. How can she be a proper mum to Aaron? Kate tells her the secret. No one knows how. You lean. "You're not alone. Let me help you." And, thank God for Aaron, Claire finally gets up.

Sawyer, Kate, and Claire are running for the plane but Frank ignores the walkie. He begins to taxi down the beach runway for takeoff until ... until ... ah, yes, he finally sees Sawyer running for the plane. They stop and reopen the door.

Meanwhile Jack is still down the rabbit hole wrestling with the big carrot wine stopper thing to plug the hole to re-ignite the big ilght. He does but did it work? Did it work?

Sawyer, Kate, Claire get on the plane and Frank says hold on. And they're off. The island is still breaking apart as Richard, Miles, Sawyer, Kate and Claire white-knuckle it in their seats. They're gaining speed. Come on ... come on ... oh dear God ... and ... LIFT OFF. "Amen."

Back at the pit of the big light, Jack is sitting there exhausted wondering if his efforts paid off. Water begins to flow back into the pit. The light comes back on. The island is functioning again. Jack has saved it. Jack is crying. Ben and Hurley think they're pulling Jack back up but they're not. It's Desmond. Desmond is crying that Jack is still down in the pit. JAAAAAAACK!
