It's officially a trend. Accomplished (or at least famous: see Hasselhoff) actors are returning to their roots. Their soap roots.
David Hasselhoff did it, Julianne Moore did it. Now Charles Shaughnessy is doing it. Shaughnessy will return to his role as ISA agent Shane Donovan on "Days of Our Lives" in June for a 10-episode arc, which could revolve around the funeral of "Days" matriarch Alice Horton (Frances Reid, who died earlier this year). His character's long absence from the show is attributed to imprisonment in South America.
Shaughnessy joined "Days" in 1984 and stayed until 1992, when he left to star in "The Nanny" as millionaire Maxwell Sheffield, opposite Fran Drescher. "The Nanny" ran from 1993 to 1999. Most recently, Shaughnessy appeared in the AMC hit show "Mad Men" as Saint John Powell from the London ad firm Putnam, Powell, and Lowe.
