Comedian Kathy Griffin, the two-time Emmy-winning star of Bravo's "My Life on the D-List," was scheduled to do a show at the DPAC back in April, but had to cancel due to illness. That canceled show was rescheduled for this Friday, October 16.
We talked to Kathy back in April about her upcoming trip to Durham. She had some very nice things to say about Clay Aiken, and also some warnings about anyone foolish enough to try to bring kids to what she described as "an adults-only evening of swearing and general negativity."
So get a babysitter and enjoy the off-color-term-for-part-of-the-male-anatomy jokes.

Kind of Crazy
Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:19 — coughlin_jakeSo I'm trying to make it through Kathy's "Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin". My biggest complaint is that it's starting feel too long; I've been stuck at around 75% through.
At times, it is very interesting: Steve Martin is not funny and an a-hole; Jerry Seinfeld is full of himself; etc. The list of celebrities that she's worked with reveals the subtext behind the whole concept of "My Life on the D-List".
But my favorite tidbit about Kathy Griffin comes from a recent NY Times article about Cesar Milan:
I'm dying to know how she picked her assistants. Some of the dullest sycophants, they make the show unwatchable to me.
The book...
Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:08 — brookecain (author)I'm also reading the book but not quite as far into it as you are. I'm trying to finish before Friday so that I can regale my friends with Kathy Griffin facts before the DPAC show.
I'm just getting to the good celebrity dish (dated Jack Black, who no longer speaks to her, etc). I love that Phil Hartman was so nice to her when she was starting out, because I adored him. The family stuff in the beginning of the book was pretty amazing, and she is brave to publish all that stuff. But I'll tell you what I really admire about Kathy, and something I think comes through in the book: She works her ass off. I think she's so deserving of her success just because of how hard she has worked to keep her career going. The story about her lazy brother turning down the job and how even as a child she knew that was wrong -- I think that must have made such an impact on her because she never turns down a job.
She was a D-Lister who had pretty much disappeared off our radar and it has only been through her tireless self-promotion (hey, it's Hollywood) that she scratched and clawed her way back in, and actually managed to move up to the A-List. And yes, I think she's an A-Lister now (at least an A minus/B plus lister). Although, the D-List moments on her show are still so hilarious to me -- like when a receptionist doesn't know her name, etc.
Her assistants are boring but her mother is a star. I love Maggie Griffin.
A-Lister?
Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:30 — coughlin_jakeI'm not sure she's an A-Lister, but I agree that the woman has worked her butt off to be where she is today. She has most certainly paid her dues and then some.
Do you think she's funny? That the book is funny? I certainly find it interesting, and I think she's exceptionally bright and clever, but I just don't find her to be very funny. (I had to skip ahead during the "nose job" sections; I almost fainted.)
I love her mother too! She was hysterical when she was tasked with keeping Kathy's Facebook up to date! Do you think she used to swear that much? My Irish family said "Jesus, Mary and Joseph" A LOT so I can believe that bit, but I don't think I've ever seen/heard her swear.
A-Lister
Wed, 10/14/2009 - 15:40 — brookecain (author)I think she's an A-Lister. She has won two Emmys, she's got big stars appearing on her show, she's back on all the major talk shows (no longer banned!), she's on the cover of magazines, she has a best-selling memoir, etc.
I actually think she's funny, too. Crude, yes. Inappropriate? Absolutely. But she cracks me up. Especially on the D-List show. Going to that DPAC show on Friday, so I'm curious about her "unabridged" stand up. (I do not think the book is very funny. It's interesting and well done, but not very funny).
The D-List ep where Maggie was in charge of Kathy's "Face Place" was one of my favorites. That and the one with Maggie's Bucket List. That one was hilarious and really sweet.
